Costa Concordia Bodies Found: Divers In Italy Report 8 More Discovered

Costa Concordia Bodies Found

ROME — Divers searching the capsized Costa Concordia cruise ship off a Tuscan island found eight bodies Wednesday on one of the passenger decks, including that of a missing 5-year-old Italian girl, authorities said.

Italy's national civil protection agency, which is monitoring the operation off a Tuscan island, said three of the bodies were recovered a few hours after being spotted by fire department divers. It said they are those of a woman, a girl and a man. Because of worsening weather, the divers were not able to immediately remove the other five bodies.

The bodies were being transferred to a hospital on the mainland for identification, a process which could take days. Before Wednesday's development, 15 people were listed as missing, but only one of them was a child, Dayana Arlotti. The 5-year-old girl was on the Mediterranean cruise with her father and his girlfriend. The girlfriend survived. The father was among the missing.

Including the missing – who are presumed dead – and bodies already recovered, the death toll in the accident stands at 32.

Dayana's father, Williams, had a history of health problems, and was said by family to be traveling to celebrate a new lease on life – he had received a kidney and pancreas transplant in the past. Some witnesses told media that they last saw him during the evacuation as he headed back to his cabin to retrieve life-saving medication.

The Concordia, which was carrying some 4,200 passengers and crew, struck a reef off the Tuscan island of Giglio on Jan. 13, took on water and started listing badly until it lay on its side. Giglio is a tiny island of fishermen and tourist hotels.

Most of the victims were found on the capsized ship in the first week or two after the accident. Three corpses were recovered from the water a few hours after it grounded.

Officials coordinating the search efforts said divers went into an area where survivors had told rescuers some passengers had been gathering to await evacuation. Many of the ship's lifeboats couldn't be launched after the ship leaned heavily on one side.

Diving search experts from France, Sweden and Britain planned to meet with the Italian diving teams to lend assistance. Decomposing refuse and floating furniture inside the submerged ship have complicated the divers' work.

On Wednesday, helicopters lowered the Italian divers onto the above-water section of the Concordia, and then the divers scrambled down the side and swam through openings into wreckage.

Dayana's mother in the first days after the accident had been quoted as saying she was holding out hope her little girl somehow survived. After word came Wednesday that the child's body was seen, she was reported to be heading to the hospital where the bodies were brought.

"I can't say if the mother was freed from a nightmare or not," her lawyer, Davide Veschi, told Sky TG24 TV.

The Concordia struck the reef when it veered too close to the island while passengers were having dinner in the ship's main dining hall. The captain, Francesco Schettino, is under house arrest at his home near Naples. He is being investigated for alleged manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship while passengers and crew were still onboard.

He denies abandoning ship and contends the reef wasn't marked on navigational charts, although sailors say the reef's location is well known and is on tourist maps. Another of ship's officer also is under investigation.

Italian news reports said Tuscan prosecutors were in the process of notifying other persons that they were formally being investigated, although their roles were not immediately specified.

Seriously people, You all lame just the captain, he was eating dinner while the crew in the control room took care of the ships course, no one who was not on the ship can put blame on just one man when there is whole crew who could be at fault as well.... Things could have been A LOT worse then it was, out of 4200 people only a possible 32 dead.... and only one child out of the 32 people. This possibly could have been prevented but there really is not way to be sure now is there??? I am sorry for the lives lost and really hear broken over the one child that had to suffer a horrible death, the father went back to his cabin for his meds, there is a chance that if he didnt go back for his meds that both him and the child could still be alive...

Not sure what you have been reading but it was my understanding that he was on the bridge and that he was the one that was directing the course. He even admited that he made a mistake and said the reef was not marked on his chart. Yes, he screwed up then. He had the course changed towards shore to save lives and this, the listing on the ship caused him to "fall" off the deck of the bridge into the lifeboat. He had ordered dinner for himself and a lady friend on the ship was what the Steward stated. I agree that it could have been worse and it will be up to the courts in Italy to determine cause.

I know the mother of that little girl has her heart breaking right now, but I'm glad the divers were able to recover her body for the mother's sake. Now she can properly bury her precious little girl. RIP.

I agree with rbaker62, who watching the little girl? If they left for the life boats and only the father went back for his medications,,who was the girl with? Other question why 21 days to take the fuel off the boat, they filled it one day.. seems somehting missing from the story

talit, I believe the little girl went back to the cabin with her father to get his medications. His girlfriend went for the life boats.

Everyone was trying to reason with the father ( since he already has taken his medication for the day) to get on the life boat...medicine would be on the island to take his next dose. He wouldn't listen.

Weather and Marine Sanctuary. They did not want to risk the lives of those diving or doing salvage OR the potential to have a massive oil spill during transfer in bad weather in a Marine Sanctuary. That is the story as I understand it. They ship was also still “settling” in that it was listing further.

Organized chaos.....Chinese fire drill....Why do people always have to die first, no exceptions, before safety precautions are implemented.

There was absolutely no reason for this to have ever happened. The captain was too busy snorting cocaine, and making sure that ship didnt get too close to shore.
He needs to go to prison for murder of all these people. And ship company needs to pay out the a-- to the families.

What punishment should you receive? Libel is against the law, too, you know. And if he was, according to you, "making sure that ship didnt get too close to shore.", what was the problem?

"But the consultant who did the analyses for prosecutors stood by results, which found no presence of the drug in urine samples or within the hair of Captain Francesco Schettino."

Are you an idiot or what? The captain was having dinner and NOT paying attention where the boat was. And IF, the consultant found no drugs, (and I find that hard to believe). Alcohol is a drug too, you know. And he WAS drinking.
Children died on this boat too, all because of the neglect of a captain.

Being showered in cocaine: you can be sure that a positive drugs test would have been leaked instead of the `traces of cocaine on his hair' story, which may in itself not be correct.

After the enquiry is completed, he may end up in prison. So may many of his colleagues. However, that process should not interfere with the most important part of the process - finding out what happened, so others can learn from the mistakes.

Dying in any sort of tragic accident must be horrid, but it has always really frightened me to think of being on a sinking ship, being thrown into the ocean, being stranded and panicked.

I say they find out what went wrong in crew, captain and company, recommend how to ensure it doesn't happen again, and then worry about punishment.

Most of the crew responded bravely. Many have even praised their efforts. When and if punishment is taken, I suggest the captain be tied to a chair and watch videos of all the GOP Presidential Debates that have taken place in the past 6 months. I know, cruel and unusual.

Am I the only one, or has anyone else noticed the metaphor between this cruise liner and the European Community? Just wondering.

Every time I see a photo of this state of the art ship lying over I further resolve to stay away from the cruise industry. It was re-established by a TV sitcom and reflects it.

Even given this disaster, you would be in much more danger driving to the port than being on a cruise.
