NYPD Muslim Surveillance Lampooned On Twitter With #myNYPDfile

On the 18th of Feb, AP reported that NYPD had monitored Muslim students all over the northeast including at the Ivy League colleges, Yale and University of Pennsylvania. The monitoring included sending undercover agents to Muslim gatherings, recording the number of times students prayed, and tracking Muslim student websites, according to the AP report.

Not surprisingly, the action sparked outrage among college administrators, Muslim students, chaplains and others who argue that this is a violation of civil rights. Among others, Yale President Richard Levin released a public statement on the 21st of Feb. saying that "police surveillance based on religion ... is antithetical to the values of Yale."

Others took to Twitter, turning their frustration at the NYPD into humor. @sadialatifi tweeted yesterday using the hashtag #myNYPDfile:

Muyslims don't demand anything in this country. It is muslims who have and are...killing us. So far, many thousands. The ignorant people on here will never get that... Islam is not a religion, it is a cult. It is a warring cult, and the Qur'an says to conquer us, enslave us, tax us, and kill us if we don't convert. There are exceptions...we can become Dhemmis--if they find us useful as slaves. There are two types of Jihad. There is warring, and the change brought about by sheer numbers. They are working on the latter, for the most part, in our country that they call the "Western Mecca". Giving rights to illegals or Muslims--most of whom have no citizenship is going to be the downfall of this country. It has been so before in history, and it will be again if we don't get back to being America, governed by the Constitution, and making exceptions for nothing.

I'm not sure what you mean by "radical" Christianity. It seems to me that many Western Christians are leading the world in terms of hunger relief, emergency response, women's rights and issues of dangerous childbirth in third world countries, disease issues, especially in Africa. Compared to Islaam, this seems to be night and day. I am aware that there are Islaamic aid and charity groups, and that Islaamic banking policies are revolutionary. However, as evidenced in Syria right now, certain policies and backward mindset are difficult to change, even by Muslims who are demanding change in their own country. Further, our unwillingness to engage their religious concerns in the public forum, to have a real discussion about God and what that really means to each one of us, only adds to the fear and ignorance surrounding intelligence issues. The CIA, or whoever, has good reason to be monitoring certain groups. Perhaps we should become aware of these issues and work to mitigate them in other ways.
