Pew Report Illustrates Youth Of Latino Population Relative To Non-Latino Counterparts

While 2010 Census data showed us how quickly the Latino population has grown in just ten years, a new statistical portrait released Tuesday by the Pew Hispanic Center illustrates just how young that population is.

New population graphs, which depict how the Latino and non-Latino populations break down in terms of age group, show that Hispanics skew much younger than their white counterparts.

Another graph, which isolates only native born Latinos living in the United States is even more drastic. The graph shows a strong pyramid shape with 0-5 year olds making up the largest portion of the population:

Native Born

The same statistical portrait holds that 8.1 of Hispanic women in the United States have given birth in the last year, while only 5.9 percent of white women have done the same. According to another Pew Study, about one in four babies born in 2008 had a Hispanic mother.

Many believe the shifting demographics of native born Latinos will mean increased political influence and purchasing power in years to come.

Chiqui Cartagena, the VP of Corporate Marketing for Univision, said at a AdWeek panel in October that politicians would do well to focus their energies on the Latino demographic now.

"Every year 500,000 or 600,000 Latinos turn 18, so the parties have an opportunity to engage this voter earlier on," she said.

Glenn Llopis, a business commentator and HuffPost LatinoVoices blogger, believes that corporate America is just starting to take notice of young Latino purchasing power, and are finally starting to market towards a bicultural, English-speaking, Latino audience.

"As the Hispanic consumer purchasing power numbers shift in favor of new marketplace opportunities - an awakening is taking place," Llopis wrote in blog for The Huffington Post.

He added that, "it's time for America's corporations to all recognize and become a part of the foundational restructuring... that awaits American enterprise by 2050."

Can someone tell us how many of the new latinos births are paid for by medicaid?

I wonder why the sociologists who compiled these statistics did not take into account the impact of illegal immigration on Hispanic population numbers. How much smaller would today's Hispanic population be if illegal immigration been terminated after 1986? The answer would no doubt cast light not just on how we got here but where we're headed.

To me it appears more and more Hispanics are having children at younger & younger ages. That's not being racist, that's a fact. Especially if you're in the NYC tri-state area like I am. Its a trend that's frightening & its going to ruin this country, both politically and financially. Not just Latinos, but ALL RACES! I'm including whites in this, but look at the article "8.1 of Hispanic women in the United States have given birth in the last year, while only 5.9 percent of white women have done the same." 2% more Latinos having children than Whites & for the most part, due to them being young, still in or just out of High School, they can't afford to support a family & go on welfare. Which causes a financial drain on local, state & federal Taxes. Which leads to a backlash in the polls, will cause people to vote for whoever wants to give them the "breaks they feel they deserve" when all they need is birth control. Instead, the families or schools don't want to teach it and the "babies having babies" trend continues. This would be under control if more people used birth control. Think about how much money would be saved and could be used for better government spending. if these people didn't spit out babies & collect welfare they'd actually have to finish school and get a job! This country is going down the $hitter. Agree with me or not, you know I'm

Just another broad brush, sweeping generalization of the mythical "La Tino" hordes conveniently ignoring (AGAIN) the racial demographics that exist within the "La Tino" rubric.

This isn't research. It's the promotion of stereo-types, tired sound-bytes and more hysteria and hype about "La Tinos" as a racial group that has never existed in the history of man..

I've seen more insightful and conclusive research from a 1st semester stoned college freshman.

Whites, Blacks, and Asians were not racial groups until some defined and treated them as such - too late to take it back. In fact, we (Spaniards) often refer Germans and Anglos nearly like different racial groups/peoples. Only in America, you have a Nazi-like notion of the "white" race - we see it in all our little neo-Nazi groups.

Hispanics are increasingly becoming a racial group in America, and it makes complete sense.

Here is something to chew on for the GOP: There are several million US born Latino children who have at least one parent who is undocumented. These kids will soon be old enough to vote AGAINST those who blocked comprehensive immigration reform and made them live in fear. Just wait for the blowback at the polls.....

Here is something to chew on for American citizens: There are several million US born Latino children who are dropping out of our nation's high schools and consigning themselves to the margins of the global economy. A majority of these under-educated, low-skilled latinos then have more children even though in all likely hood they cannot provide a healthy environment to succeed in school and later in life. The same tragic pathology afflicts much of the black community as well. And yet it seems to be the official policy groups like NCLR to dissolve our nation's borders and invite more chaos and social decay.

Does anyone else see the inherent racism in this article? How can you justify that one's genetic make-up has anything to do with who you are as an individual?

Yeah, why does it have to be about race and color, when we are all human beings.

Expect substantially-increasing costs associated with getting a majority of these kids up-to-speed academically and socially.

If the Hispanic birth rate follow trends set by other immigrant groups, it will decline until it is about the same as the birth rate for other U.S. demographic groups. Hispanics will grow as a precentage of the poulation for a couple of more decades, but then the birth rate will stall at or just below replacement levels.

By then it may be too late. The prognosis for our people is grim.

As Carlos Mendoza once said "There isn't a Latina in LA over the age of 16 who isn't pregnant."

So, lest we be overwhelmed and put on reservations like my Native American ancestors.... we shouldn't import more of this culture.
