The Flying Baby: Rachel Hulin, Photographer, Captures Infants In Flight (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 02/22/2012 4:24 pm Updated: 08/24/2012 5:31 pm

While on assignment, photographer Rachel Hulin took a moment to take a photo of her son, Henry, "in flight" -- setting up the shot to make it appear as though the baby was floating in midair, she told TIME in an interview. After posting the picture on Facebook, and getting a huge response, she knew she had found something special.

"The photo was sort of magical in an unexpected way and I wanted to make more,” Hulin told TIME. “I felt like the pictures could show the world that babies inhabit that is all their own."

While Hulin wouldn't go into the specifics of how the shoots are carried out, she told TIME that she doesn't ever stage the shots.

“I never throw him," she told the magazine. "And I never move him into a place in the frame that he wasn’t in to begin with. I like Henry to fly the way he feels like it, I never pose him in a specific way."

Jason Lee's children weren't flying through the air, Hulin's series shares a similar concept with his photos that depict his two daughters, dressed up for holidays and as characters -- all of which have an adorable twist.

According to Lee, most of his inspiration was derived from everyday life with his daughters, and began when his mother was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

""I like Henry to fly the way he feels like it"" Oh, please common Lady, what in the hell is wrong with this people?

I guess this lady will only entertain fools with this BS, and I see we are full of fools in this world.....I can make an elephant fly in one minute of Photoshop work, she needs pay attention to the shading...some photos are very obvious that the toddler was never even in the same place.

Don't throw the child, use the Force. Then it's not abuse.

Time to throw my baby and film it.

Unless the photographer explains how she technically did this there's going to be a rash of people throwing their babies around in mid-air. Folks, do not try this at home.

I am so glad this was explained because I thought this woman had lost her mind. Now that I know, yes these are extremely cute.

This so endearing and hilarious at the same time. Love the pictures!

Two images: Set up your cam on a tripod to steady it. Take the first image with no one in the scene, then take the second picture holding the baby. In photoshop load the first image (no people in image), then create a new layer above the image and place the second image (baby and person holding baby) in that layer. At this point you can either mask out the person holding the baby, or even erase them with the eraser tool. We have been doing this for years with Adobe After Effects to make Independent films. It's neat, quick, requires no green screen. Thanks.

I would like to try that but, how do I get to Adobe After Effects??
02:07 PM on 02/25/2012
Well if your just using still images you only need photoshop. If your using videos then you would need after effects. You can google either one, I think adobe gives you a 30 day free trial to try them out and after that you would have to purchase them. They are not too expensive if your really into editing and manipulating photos/videos.

I find it quite interesting and fascinating. I'm trying to figure out how it's done and I think I figured it out. Trust me if it's done the way I think it is the baby is perfectly safe. I'm quite sure the mother would not cause any harm to her baby just make these shots.

Cool pics. The photographer has photoshopped out whoever is holding the baby. I completely photoshopped my ex out of a holiday family shot. Time consuming, but you can't even tell he was ever there.......
