CK One Launching Cosmetics -- But Are People Still Into The Brand?

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/23/2012 1:57 pm Updated: 07/23/2012 4:27 pm

CK One, that perfume we all marinated ourselves in back in the '90s, is expanding into a CK One cosmetics line, Women's Wear Daily reports this morning.

The makeup will include fare like "3-in-1 Face Makeup" and will debut exclusively at Ulta:

“With its fragrance roots, expanding into a color cosmetics line was a natural progression for the CK One brand,” said Tom Murry, president and chief executive officer of Calvin Klein Inc. “This latest extension embodies the energy and free spirit of CK One, offering fresh and unique beauty products that are ideal for today’s youthful, independent consumer.”

CK One's makeup will also be plugged using ads that star Lara Stone. (Remember her infamous "F-word" billboard? That was CK One.)

Okay! Now that that's out of the way: CK One, you need to calm the eff down.

Over the past almost 20 years since CK One's launch, Calvin Klein has grown by leaps and bounds and has sort of outgrown its mid-90's "heroin chic" image. (CK was around for about 15 years prior to CK One's launch, too.) In our experience, our peers got tired of CK One's ubiquitous aroma and moved on to other fragrances pre-Y2K.

But that didn't stop the branding juggernaut: Ck One relaunched in 2011, touting branded underwear, jeans and yes, perfume. Coty, who controls CK fragrance now, is still releasing versions of the classic fragrance, like CK One Summer, which just debuted for summer 2012.

Sure, some perfumes that were trendy 20 years ago are still going strong. But most are like Clinique Happy: although they can still be found at Macy's, we don't know anyone who wears it.

So, to the execs at Coty and CK, we say: 20 years later, we don't think we're going to be shaking our CK One fatigue any time soon.

But maybe we're wrong. Are you still buying CK One products? Tell us in the comments if you'd be on board for CK One makeup, and read more details about what kind of makeup we can expect from Calvin at WWD.

I tried the new 3-in-1 CK One Foundation....and I love it! I was skeptical, as I'm sure most will be, but I went out on a limb and I'm glad I did. Seriously. It's amazing and has made it's way into my daily make-up routine. (Plus the price point won't break the bank! Bonus!) Well done CK!

I still wear CK One all the time. Wearing it now, actually. I love unisex scents and I hate girly, flowery, cloying scents. I don't care if it's "dated" or whatever. I like it, it smells good, it's not obscenely expensive like Bvlgari etc, and I get a lot of compliments on it. People ask me pretty often what scent I'm wearing, and they seem surprised when I say CK One, like they sort of forgot that it existed. I also love Ralph Lauren Polo Sport for women, which is also an older scent. Clean, not girly, almost unisex. I think if you find a scent you like and that works for you, who cares how old it is?

Androgynous, indefinable, clean – a great scent for Calvin Kleins.

I liked CKOne in the 90's and I like it now. It's a nice, clean, not too girlie scent. What's not to like? It's a classic.

I think CK One will be successful. Can I explain why? No. But it's just a gut feeling.

OTOH, it will all depend on how they market it, I suppose.

My signature fragrance is Givenchy's Indecence which was very popular in the 70's. I love it because of it's mid-notes of patchouli. Very hard to find but fortunately has been made available here again. I have never worn CKOne but I do believe that when a fragrance works for you it is perfectly fine to stay with it, no matter what anyone says. A truly chic and elegant person doesn't need to chase trends in order to be so.

I don't wear CK One but find the idea of disliking a perfume just because it was formulated 20 years ago very odd. There is a fragrance developed in 1889 that I wear proudly all the time- Guerlain's Jicky. There are fragrance classics just as there are clothing and handbag classics. The little black dress, the Hermes bag, the true red lip, Chanel #5.
