After Wednesday night's showdown during the Republican primary debate in Mesa, Arizona, GOP Candidate Rick Santorum and debate moderator John King clashed during CNN's post-debate coverage.

CNN's Gloria Borger interviewed Santorum and asked the candidate for his response to critics who say he spends "way too much time talking about divisive cultural issues."

Santorum inserted a critique of the media when he answered Borger's question. "People care about families. People care about what's happening to our society," he said. "But I do get these questions as John King tried to do on contraception and other things, that are sort of outrageous types of questions, and then the next question from the reporter is, 'why are you talking so much about social issues?'"

While moderating the debate, King asked all of the candidates about abortion, a question that was booed by the debate audience. "So they ask," Santorum continued. "And then they say 'oh, but you're talking about social issues all the time.' But I understand the game and I intend to stay on message.'"

Following Santorum's interview, CNN's Anderson Cooper, who was hosting the network's post-debate coverage, tossed to King who was about to interview GOP candidate Ron Paul. King immediately responded to Santorum's criticism. "And Anderson a response to Sen. Santorum quickly there," King said. "I understand the game as well and I don't think it's out of bounds to ask a presidential candidate about something they said during a presidential campaign, but that's how the process works."

View King's response below and Santorum's claims above.

Controversial debate questions:
  • Juan Williams and Newt Gingrich

In South Carolina, Juan Williams suggested that Gingrich's comments about blacks and food stamps were insulting to all Americans, especially black Americans. Gingrich fiercely denied those charges, and doubled down on his comments -- and got a standing ovation from the audience.

  • John King and Newt Gingrich

John King began CNN's South Carolina debate by asking Gingrich about his ex-wife's explosive interview. Gingrich responded with a searing condemnation of the question, and the "elite media."

  • Wolf Blitzer and Ron Paul

One of the most discussed moments of the GOP debates came when Wolf Blitzer questioned Ron Paul about his views on health care. Members of the audience cheered when Blitzer asked if society should let an uninsured man die.

  • George Stephanopoulos and Mitt Romney

George Stephanopoulos asked Mitt Romney whether states could legally ban contraception. Romney was offended by the question, and said there was no point to it because no state was considering doing so.

  • John King and Mitt Romney

John King asked Mitt Romney if he planned to follow in the footsteps of his father -- who once ran for president -- and release his tax returns. Romney said, "Maybe," prompting boos from the audience.

  • Byron York and Michele Bachmann

Byron York asked Michele Bachmann if she would be submissive to her husband as president.

  • Megyn Kelly and Rick Santorum

Members of the audience booed when Megyn Kelly replayed a clip of a gay soldier asking the candidates whether they would reinstate DADT.

  • Brian Williams and Rick Perry

Brian Williams asked Rick Perry if he ever had trouble sleeping over the possibility that one of the 234 prisoners who were executed during his term could have been innocent. The audience cheered at the mention of 234 executions, and Williams also asked Perry what he made of that reaction.

  • Chris Wallace and Rick Perry

Chris Wallace asked Rick Perry to defend his decision to allow undocumented college students to pay in-state tuition. Perry was booed when he said that people who do not believe in educating undocumented students do not have a heart.

  • Chris Wallace and Newt Gingrich

Chris Wallace and Newt Gingrich got into a hostile exchange at a debate in Iowa after Wallace asked him to explain reports that his campaign staff had quit en masse. Gingrich accused the Fox News panelists of playing "Mickey Mouse games."

I simply cannot stand people like Santorum, with their holier than thou attitudes.  He spouts off constantly about issues that are NOT up to the government to control and then acts as if the media or everyone else is out of bounds because they dare to question him about what he has said.

These people are about as messed up and narcissistic as I have ever seen.  I find is appalling that so  Read More...

They should be asking Santorum about that health care corporation he's involved in that seems to be a fairly effective suicide factory.

Santorum is a colossal bore. He is straining to conjure up controversy for the sake of attention-getting. F.A.I.L.

These debates are not giving us any new insight into these campaigners. They have turned bring and stale. So, I propose, we just turn it into entertainment instead of trying to make it look like news. Get donald trump to moderate, and hold it in a large arena venue. Vendors could Sell noismakers and horns, make sure there is a jumbo-tron ready to capture facial reactions, and let the 'candidates sell tickets to the event and sign autographs. Let them put on their 'humble' faces when the crowd roars, and get their two cents in before we re-elect Mr. Obama.

I read a couple of posts of women supporting Santorum. They could only have come from men posing as women or relatives of Ricks. This dude wants to decide every single thing a women can do to her self. He says no to contraception, he says no to abortion for any reason including the rape of a child. He says he will defund planned parenthood which helps many women with a variety of issues not just abortions. He might as well be a peeping Rick when it comes to any sexual issue and I cant fathom how any women would find him an attractive candidate. Oh well when you look at the other three options.

When the debates withe ultimate GOP nominee and the president occur, the audience will not be top heavy with slack jawed toothless teabagger goobers hooting at lobbed purple prose. The GOP nominee will either have to adjust tactics or appear - rightly - to be a bullying B_U_F_F_O_O_N.

Santorum's entire raison d'être since his days in the Senate has been about being homophobic and anti abortion. The anti contraception push is a recent arrow added to his quiver.

It is utter ridiculosity for Santorum to claim that it is out of bounds to ask him a question about abortion. He has spent at least half his political life railing against abortion.

Chris Wallace was a better moderator than King. He cowered in front of Newt. I find him to be a wimp.

Boy, Newt Gingrinch must really have traumatized John King during their last debate because King completely wilted to Mitt Rmoney last Tuesday. King asked Rmoney a question, which was completely ignored and disregarded. When it was pointed out to Mitt that he didn't respond to the question, Rmoney in a Palin-like moment said that King can ask whatever questions he wanted & Rmoney would answer whatever he wanted. Instead of following up w/ the same question again (maybe reworded differently), John King actually threw his hands up & said okay, fair enough. Oh my God, if you can't even be a journalist while they're RUNNING for office, how do you hope to hold their feet to the fire (and look after the people's interests) when they are in office & have power and influence? It's shameful.

Sure, Newt got the better of him when he bluntly asked him about the "open marriage" question, but it was because King worded the question wrong. It was relevant, if only because throughout the 90s Gingrinch was hypocritical w/ the Clinton-Lewinsky matter. I think King learned the wrong lesson.

"People care about families. People care about what's happening to our society," he said. "But I do get these questions as John King tried to do on contraception and other things, that are sort of outrageous types of questions, and then the next question from the reporter is, 'why are you talking so much about social issues?'"

Santorum, you bring up those issues and then expect reporters NOT to question them. YOU are the one who started this contraception question. YOU are the one who started questioning social issues that you are blaming Obama for doing. YOU are the culprit Santorum yet all you want to do is throw out all that crap and let it simmer without explaining yourself. Sorry Rick, you cannot do that. Once it leaves your lips, you own it and are responsible for it.

The only reason I can see for you not wanting to talk about it is the fact that you know you're wrong. Even religious organizations know you're wrong and are asking you to take religion out of your campaign period. Are you doing it? No! You're taking a path no one wants to travel down and you refuse to come back on the main highway where everybody else is. Explain yourself Rick, or GO HOME!

Maybe President Obama should take a lesson from the GOP: the best defense is a good offense. The GOP is going to come out slashing. It's time to stop playing nice guy.

There will be time for that. I think (hope) President Obama is letting them cut each other up *first* and will respond as necessary once their bloodletting is done.

All of these Moderators need to grow a pair and not let a politician off the hook just because a stack audience or indignant politician attempts to avoid a pertinent question. That is why we watch to get real answers directly answered about issues the Candidate or the Public cares about. We care less about the Meek, Wimpy Moderators unable to follow up on tough questions. This just shows their salary far exceeds their talent.

When will the GOP quit whining about the media? They say stupid stuff and when they get called on it, they blame the media.
05:24 PM on 02/25/2012
Unfortunately, it's part of the Republican ideology to distrust the "elite" media. So, their candidates play to that by adopting that stance. It also dovetails nicely with that faux-victim stance that works so well in the South. [I only trust FoxNews. They're commin' to take away our guns! Keep your hands off my Medicare!] It's just funny to see politicians who went to law school (believe it or not) like St.Torum, & Harvard Business School, like Rmoney, pretend to be a rube.

Because it's one of the two main pillars of their overall strategy. Victim mentality combined with an 'out of control left-wing media' always gives you an excuse not to take responsibility for anything. It's a huge crutch and go-to excuse.

When John King told Romney that he did not answer the question he asked him, the smug Romney used the anti-lame stream media line others have used, "You get to ask the questions you want and I get to answer the way I want."

King said to that, "OK ". John King, Oscar Mayer would like to offer you a job as their new spokesman.

I just listened to an interview of Sen Santorum by Glenn Beck. it is the beginning of the 3rd hour. he is very frank and open and doesn't dodge any of the questions Glenn asked. Glenn grilled him on his charitable contributions being only 4%...handled that with grace. He was also on GBTV last night for an hour. I suggest that to really hear the man for you all to listen to one or both. please be open. you may think GB is irrelevant but you are a small minority. not everyone thinks like you all do. if you are wondering why he is surging you may want to listen.
04:24 PM on 02/24/2012
Well, "surging" is a relevant term in your GOP campaign so far...it appears it's just Santorum's "turn" to surge. The TP's choke hold on the GOP is killing it. Unless the moderates in the GOP take a stand against the TP it won't matter which sheet winds up the candidate.

"You may think GB is irrelevant but you are a small minority."

There are roughly 200,000,000 adults in this country, and you're trying to tell us that the vast majority think Glenn Beck is relevant?
