Marijuana Use And Driving Under The Influence On The Rise Among Teens, Study Says

Posted: 02/23/12 12:46 PM ET  |  Updated: 02/24/12 05:44 PM ET

Marijuana Driving Study

According to a new study, marijuana use among teens is currently at its highest level in 30 years and 19 percent of teen drivers reported driving under the influence of marijuana. What's more, 36 percent of the teens surveyed said they are confident the drug has no effect on their abilities behind the wheel.

The study, conducted by Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Liberty Mutual Insurance, also revealed that 19 percent of adolescents don't believe alcohol has a negative effect on driving.

Overall, teens are more likely to bring up safety issues with friends who've been drinking alcohol than those smoking marijuana, according to the report.

The study also revealed that females are more likely than males to ask a friend to refrain from driving after drinking or using marijuana.

On the other hand, 94 percent of drivers who've been drinking and 90 percent of drivers who've been smoking said they would hand over the keys if their passengers requested they do so.

Stephen Wallace, SADD's senior adviser for policy, research and education, told USA Today that the study highlights some disturbing perceptions.

"We hear from young people who believe that marijuana actually makes them a safer driver, that they concentrate harder, drive slower," Wallace told the paper. But "marijuana affects memory, judgment, and perception."

A recent study published in the British Medical Journal suggests that people who drive within three hours of using marijuana are twice as likely to get into an accident than those who are sober, the Atlantic highlights. The risk also increased among people younger than 35.

On the other hand, results of a 2010 study suggests precisely the opposite.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted by Connecticut's Hartford Hospital and the University of Iowa revealed that people who smoked marijuana 30 minutes before getting behind the wheel did not react much differently than they had before being given the drug.

Regardless of the conflicting data and possible causes, the number of fatal car accidents involving teens increased during the first half of 2011, the Washington Post observed.

The data, released by the Governors Highway Safety Association on Feb. 16, show that while the number of total deadly accidents has decreased, the number has risen among 16 and 17-year-old drivers.

Although SADD's study suggests marijuana use is at a 30-year high among teens, the Hartford Courant points out that government surveys through 2009 have indicated a decline in marijuana use among adolescents.

weed does increase focus, that much i know from experience. if you have ever been three prong diving you know that octopus is the easiest thing to catch, but the hardest damn thing to find. it takes a lot of focus to find an octopus, you have to scrutinize everything to discern one little eye, the flash of a siphon, the telltale color, notice every likely hole. this is why i always smoke before i go diving. it lowers my heart rate, relaxes my muscles, and increases my focus, all very helpful for diving. and i notice i ALWAYS catch more octopus on weed. fish i pretty much catch the same either way though.

Thanks for sharing that benefit. That's a good one. Dr. Lester Grinspoon has collected similar testimonials from marijuana consumers - some famous.

In Colorado prohibitionists keep trying to claim "teen Marijuana use is way way up." Turns out their HUGE INCREASE was from 7 incidents to 12.

Educate, Legalize, Regulate, Tax.

Drivers always said the same thing about booze - that they "drove better when drunk" - I had a former roommate who claimed that. Turned out he had killed a driver driving drunk in Florida apparently, and later wrecked a employers car pulling out in front of someone while drunk.
When drivers were tested, even the best of the drivers who drove after having just a drink or two were not nearly as responsive a driver as the sober drivers.
I have always said pot is about the same as booze - it makes sense that in driving, it is about the same, it makes you slower to respond, you should not be driving when any drug is impairing you, making your responses slower.

I've driven many miles, the worst is needing to get some sleep, next is having one too many, least is driving after consuming cannabis. Anyone who thinks drinking and driving = driving on cannabis, I challenge you to a test, for every toke I take off of the illegal cannabis, you take a drink of the socialy acceptable, legal alcohol, after two hours we do a driving course,I will do better than you every time.

Many people think marijuana consumption causes accidents like alcohol. It doesn't, for various reasons. Studies have shown marijuana is not as intoxicating as alcohol. More importantly, while alcohol drinkers think they are better drivers and so drive faster and more aggressively, marijuana consumers are very aware of their altered consciousness and correctly judge when they are too impaired to drive - refraining from doing so. If they must, they correctly compensate for their altered state by driving slower and more cautiously.

The point is, judgement is not affected like it is with alcohol. Marijuana consumers simply don't put themselves or others in harm's way. This is why the PREPONDERANCE of studies show marijuana is NOT a significant cause of auto accidents.怀

the first thing i notice is that there isnt any remotely compelling evidence that marijuana use has any negative effect on ones driving ability. one single study, that at face value has, (at best) a 50% chance of being accurate. all the rest of the information they provide highlights data that is only disturbing if one believes marijuana effects driving, which again they provide no reason to believe. sneaky fallacious logic trying to trick people, childish scare tactics, totally unfounded.

i smoke and drive all the time and ive never been into an accident or had any problems. I dont agree with this study because thc effects people differently and there are some people who can drive high on thc while there are others who cant such as my brother who turns into a wreck when high. I noticed his driving skills do get worse when hes under the influence of thc and he reacts alot slower to certain things. Basically this study is innacurate but at the same time its true for some people.

drinking and driving should never go together but until they do studies on the effects of pot on the body then I am not going to be convinced
06:30 PM on 02/24/2012
The only way pot effects driving ability is if you drop the joint and have to look down to pick it up
06:33 PM on 02/24/2012
Anyone who thinks their driving is not impaired under the influence of pot is horribly naive. They likely have always been high themselves when around under pot users and therefore overlook the obvious physical and mental derangements that occur.

Both exaggerating the impairment caused by all amounts of cannabis use and scoffing at the effects of smoking while driving are equally wrong. As usual reality lies somewhere in the middle.

"Anyone who thinks their driving is not impaired under the influence of pot is horribly naive." lol a very bold claim, what on earth do you base it on? even in this horrendously one sided article, there isnt any compelling evidence that pot does anything to ones driving ability, none whatsoever. if anyone's naive i would say its the one claiming things as fact with nothing but their imagination as evidence.

Drugs are not the problem, it's the impairment. Nicotine and caffeine from tobacco and coffee are potentially dangerous drugs but don't usually cause impairment that would effect driving a motor vehicle. Using cannabis produces a period of impairment that lasts between 30 minutes and 2 hours with moderate use while it takes far longer to metabolize alcohol or most other drugs.

A person that drank too much the night before and has a hangover is still somewhat impaired but the alcohol has all metabolized out of the drinkers body. There is no hangover from even heavy cannabis use but the cannabinoids in cannabis remain in the body for as much as a couple weeks even though the impairment only lasted a couple hours. I think this whole issue has become far too over exaggerated.

marijuana isn't a drug.

True, cannabis is a herbal plant. But did you know that marijuana was only a slang term for wild tobacco used by Mexican migrant workers until the 1930's? It was the newspaper magnet Wm Randolf Hearst that linked cannabis with marijuana in his tabloid style newspapers sensationalized stories which became the Reefer Madness films.

Overall, kids do not trust anyone as much as they trust their peers. They see so much so called education on drugs and alcohol that to them is proven to be hyperbole or false so they are ripe to listen to their BFFs etc. They also tend to be young and their brains do not process information the same as when it is more developed.

I have been reading all these pro pot posts- lets just say that a pothead is a pothead. If you don't have cancer just get over yourselves. Pot makes you high, everything is dulled except your appetite. The cancer patients actually can gain weight on it and it dulls their pain- that says alot since they compare it to narcotics. The last thing teens need to do is smoke weed and chase it with booze then hop in a car. I have known many adults who smoke weed in the evenings, but they hang out at home and eat, watch tv. I don't care if you toke up a fat one just stay at home. No one wants a doped up teen driving a car, they may hit a fellow pothead but then they would not feel it, because they are numb and calm.
05:19 PM on 02/24/2012
You shouldnt talk about things, unless you have first hand experience. Otherwise you have no idea what your talkin about. I do smoke have smoked for about 15 years now and have driven many time on it. It does not really change anything. It also depends on how much. If I get to high then I wont drive and I wont drive drunk. Also, if,

"A recent study published in the British Medical Journal suggests that people who drive within three hours of using marijuana are twice as likely to get into an accident than those who are sober, the Atlantic highlights."

that is true then why dont you hear about more people who get in accidents that are high?

The ER's test for alcohol, not pot. Police test for alcohol, not pot. If there was a quick pot breathalyzer then there would be tons of data. That patent could make some money.
