Miami's Terrible Traffic Is About To Get Worse, Thanks To Obama, SBWFF, Linsanity, And Horses

Miami's Terrible Traffic Is About To Get Worse

One of the reasons we hate to hate Miami is the hours spent sitting on turnpikes and expressways, not watching the world pass by.

That's because Florida ranks ninth in the nation for length of time it takes to get to work, according to the US Census Bureau's 2010 American Community Survey.

Is it possible that there are people out there who spend more time in traffic than us? Yep: New York grabbed the top spot.

But to make matters worse, with four major events hitting Miami today and through the weekend -- President Obama speaking at UM, Linsanity at AAA, South Beach Wine & Food Festival, and the Cavalia show at Bicentennial Park -- the traffic will go from terrible to horrendous, starting right...now.

Here's today's schedule; drive accordingly:

  • The South Beach Wine and Food Festival runs Thursday to Sunday, with seminars and events at various locations and times in Miami Beach and South Beach.
  • President Obama is speaking at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Univeristy of Miami in Coral Gables, then heading to a fundraiser in Pinecrest.
  • The Heat are hosting the Knicks at AmericanAirlines Arena in Downtown Miami at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
  • The 74-horse show Cavalia "Odysseo" opens Feb. 29 at 8 p.m., but animals are traveling to and set-up begins in Downtown's Bicentennial Park today.

Get those iPods ready for a long ride home.
