Michael Gilman Charged With Chaining Daughter To Bed For 5 Weeks

A Sharp County, Ark. man is accused of chaining his 11-year-old daughter to a bed with a dog leash.

KAIT reports that, according to authorities, Michael Gilman allegedly kept his daughter restrained for five weeks while her mother was in New York with a family member.

"Some of the behavior of this child, the family is claiming they can't control, and a lot of what they did was for her safety," Det. Sgt. Ken Guidry told KAIT. "However, chaining a child to a bed, we just can't have that."

Gilman is charged with false imprisonment and first degree endangering the welfare of a minor.

Guidry told WMC-TV that the girl, who is now in protective custody, "could go as far as the bathroom, but was actually chained to her bed."

The girl eventually called authorities, who then arrested Gilman, according to WMC-TV.

The story comes the same week KHOU reported that police found 21 people, including 11 children, living in a single house in Dayton, Texas. Three of the children were tied to their beds, according to police.

I don't care what kind of behavior problems the child had no person should ever be treated like this! With a father who acts in this manner there is no wonder she has some problems, but this is not how you work on them. Evidently her mother is able to handle her daughter. It seems she should have been taken from this home a long time ago for her safety.

And this is why we need child protective laws. THIS is why we need government involvement with children.

Because you can't just say, "They belong to the parents" and walk away. Most of us parents are GOOD parents. But there are too many of parents like THIS, and if we have no legal way to take their kids away from them, those children are done for.

First of all, just because Michael Gilman said "she was out of control," that doesn't mean it is true. Many people who commit crimes and are arrested actually make up untruths to get out of trouble....unbelievable as it may seem! There are children who have problems and parents who make bad decisions with the best of intentions; however, since we haven't heard from the other children, the wife, or anyone else who is talking, either scenario may be true. Hmmm, my bet is the father is an abusive creep. I hope I am wrong.

Doesn't do a lot of good if she can't get to the phone. We had a similar incident in SW Michigan. However, in that case, child protective services had been called over and over by the school. They did nothing. Finally the parents pulled the girl out of school and said they were home schooling because she had "issues." Turns out the parents were chaining her, not just TO the bed but IN the bed using a choke collar around her waist. One day her stepmother was vacuuming and the vacuum started on fire. The stepmom chose to save herself and let the girl die in the fire.

A parent who can't figure out how to handle their kid without abusing them shouldn't be allowed to be a parent. And anyone who supports that parent should have to undergo forced sterilization.

if they could not control he all they had to do was to take her to juvi, unlike giving a death threatening punishment
