President Obama's Faith Inspires Pastors' Defense Of White House Religion Policies

Pastors are defending Barack Obama's record when it comes to religion. Above, Obama delivers remarks on the economy February 1, 2012 at the James Lee Community Center in Falls Church, Va.

Religious and nonprofit group leaders Thursday defended President Barack Obama's spiritual beliefs and his administration's support of faith-based groups, rebuffing conservative accusations that the White House is waging a war on religion.

"It's kind of silly season here. It's an election year and you are looking for any leg up," said the Rev. Joel Hunter, senior pastor of Northland Church in Orlando and a spiritual adviser who writes weekly devotionals -- passages of scripture with explanations -- for Obama and regularly prays with the president. "Anyone who knows him will not question his personal faith or devotion."

Hunter spoke on a conference call with eight religious and nonprofit leaders organized by the Rev. Dr. Gary Gunderson, senior vice president of faith and health at Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare in Memphis, Tenn. Gunderson was in Washington, D.C., last week for a meeting about faith-based healthcare efforts and said tense public debates over Obama's policies on religion and the president's personal faith motivated him to host the discussion.

"The federal government's relationship with faith-based groups is stronger than ever," said the Rev. Peg Chemberlin, president emeritus of the National Council of Churches. "Religious freedom is respected" while government partnerships with faith-based groups are expanding, she said.

The defense came as Republican presidential contenders and conservative figures have publicly questioned the president's faith. The Rev. Franklin Graham, son of famed evangelist Billy Graham, said he didn't know whether Obama is Christian. Former Sen. Rick Santorum said Obama follows a "phony" theology not based on the Bible.

The faith-based office created under President George W. Bush has expanded during Obama's presidency, broadening partnerships between the government and faith-based groups. The president's recent decision to require employers' insurance plans to cover contraception has stirred a debate about religious freedom, namely from Roman Catholic hospitals, universities and social service agencies. Southern Baptist leaders and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod have also aligned themselves on the issue with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which opposes Obama's rule.

According to a recent article in Mother Jones, Catholic religious charities have received more than $650 million during Obama's presidency from the Department of Health and Human Services, one of the largest government funders of faith-based groups. The Conference of Catholic Bishops has received $81.2 million in federal grants from the HHS during Obama's first three years, almost $10 million more than during the last three years of the Bush presidency.

Thursday's call included Thabiti Boon, fatherhood advisor to the Allan Houston Foundation; Chad Frey, director of Agape Center at Messiah College; Angel Gutierrez, vice president of Catholic Charities of Chicago; Kevin King, executive director of Mennonite Disaster Service in Lititz, Pa.; Diana Miller, executive director of Community Job Club of Stow, Ohio; and Melissa Rogers, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

All commended Obama, though some also had criticism.

Rogers, who Obama appointed to his first Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships in 2009, said the administration made a mistake in its first release of the contraception mandate in January that did not allow an exemption for employers that weren't houses of worship. She said the administration's revision this month is an improvement. That revision will require religious employers that are not houses of worship to have contraception covered in their insurance, but will pass on the cost of that coverage to insurance providers.

While praising the administration for reaching out to religious and secular groups to find "more common ground," she added that it still has work to do regarding employment discrimination at religious institutions that receive federal funding. Right now, faith-based groups that get government grants are allowed to discriminate based on religion when hiring. Civil rights organizations have long pressured Obama to execute a campaign promise he made in 2008 to stop the discrimination.

The group's defense of Obama follows a stern warning issued by major religious groups earlier this week that told presidential candidates including Santorum to keep religious attacks out of the campaign. Another group of more than 100 evangelical, mainline and Catholic pastors, theologians, and denominational heads have also signed a petition to protest the use of religion as a "political weapon."

CLARIFICATION: An earlier version of this article stated that Lutherans have aligned themselves with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which opposes Obama's contraception rule. This has been clarified to indicate the specific Lutheran denomination that has come out against the contraception rule.

They accuse the man of being a non-Christian whilst they run wild with their adultery, idolatry and everything else. Wait, maybe he isn't a Christian since, you know, his actions don't seem to fit the so well laid out description of what it means to "walk with Christ."

The fact that this is even being discussed is a sad reflection of the state of this country.

The president's religious beliefs are nobody's business but his own. They should not be judged, defended, or criticized by anyone in the context of politics. The White House should not have ANY policy about religion of any kind - nor should it have any policies that are influenced by religion of any kind.

Anyone who tries to make religion an issue in the political sphere has no business in politics at all.

If the President was a real Christian, (not Muslim, as he told George Step-on-all-of-us), he would hate his father and mother, which he clearly doesn't, having written a whole book about them. He would have also cut off a hand and gouged out an eye, because Jesus said to do so if you've sinned. And, God knows, the Good Book says we're all rotten sinners. From what I can tell, unless he's had plastic surgery, he's still in one piece. So, apparently he's faking. I wouldn't feel too bad, though. Apparently it was George Bush's Christian praying that got us into Iraq in the first place. Lord save us if Mr. Obama starts praying to the same God about Iran...

If you claim to be a Christian you can't just know how to talk the talk. You have to walk the walk and Obama is way of base in that regard.

A Christian does not vote against the Born Alive Act (I don't buy his phony reasons why)

A Christian does not support partial-birth abortion

Sorry

"Christian" means a follower of Christ! It is a very difficult thing to do and few if any do so completely. Therefore, we all fail and that is why we should not judge. It does not take a denomination, a pastor, a priest, or a politician to make this call but Jesus himself when one stands before the throne of God. He will say He knows you or He doesn't know you. Until that time each of us should study His teachings and try to live as He taught. I have never trusted anyone who has to proclaim "I am more Christian than you because I...."

If one wishes to determine if Obama has Christian beliefs it is legitimate to ask where he would have learned them. If the best one can come up with is Rev. Jeremiah Wright and his "Black Liberation Theology" then it is reasonable to think that Obama has no such beliefs.

It is a sad fact that a great many nominal 'Christians' think Jesus was merely a great moral teacher and nothing more. This is but the Arian heresy that plagued the early Church. I've never heard Obama say he believes in the divinity of Jesus, and very much doubt that he does. If he really wishes to convince me otherwise, he can publicly recite the Nicene Creed - without a teleprompter - and look humble sincere as he does so.

Why should he have to?
He is not the spiritual leader of the country nor does he ever want to be.
He has to answer to us about his political beliefs and decisions.
He does not have to answer to us about his religious beliefs.
That is what freedom of religion is all about.
06:54 PM on 02/27/2012
He has publicly claimed to be a Christian. He has publicly stated that his policies are based on what he thinks Jesus taught. He can't have it both ways. If he claims to be a Christian, then it is legitimate to demand to know what he thinks that entails. If he cannot recite the Nicene Creed with humility and complete agreement, then he is not really a Christian and his statements are lies.

Heard of this thing called the Constitution? No religious test etc. yada yada? Again, if you want a theocracy, there are a number of countries elsewhere that might fulfill your requirements.

Please try to read the thread and think logically. I'm not imposing a religious test for public office. Obama can be a Zoroastrian Fire Worshiper if he wishes. However, he has publicly claimed to be a Christian, and further claims to base his political agenda on Christian teaching. I doubt both claims and have suggested a means of determining whether he's telling us the truth or whether, indeed, he actually understands what Christianity is.

Many so called pastors wouldn't know a Christian if they met one. We could start with those that deny that Jesus is the Christ and the Savior of the World.

I be;ieve ONLY GOD knows. We all have opinions. As do those who voiced theirs in the article. I believe, I ain't gotta worry 'bout what otha folk do. JESUS said: "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven" Matthew 5:16. I have no control ova how otha folk may interpret this or respond . To be honest, it's all I can do to follow HIS teachin's. HE leads me and I follow. Do othas? I don't know. But we all must give an accountun' one day. Dear LORD you know I don't wanna be on the side with the goats. This is my fervent prayer. Life.

The title of the article changes from:

Pastors Tell How They Know Obama Is Christian"

To:

"President Obama's Faith Inspires Pastors' Defense Of White House Religion Policies"

it seems the original question was too tough to explain, and if they could explain biblically the identifying words and actions, they might find some who boast that they are Christians really aren't

so.....Pastors, tell us how you know Obama is Christian?

You are correct. Many say they are Christian, having no idea what they mean. As much as 40% of church congregations are there because their parents went, they enjoy the tranquility, they are trolling for romance, or to further business endeavors. Very few are there to praise God. Jesus said His road is narrow (tough). All others are wide (easy). Praise GOD!!!

Brings to mind a passage:

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’

Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”
08:22 AM on 02/29/2012
Exactly! Slapping a label on yourself doesn't make you a Christian any more than wearing a T-Shirt with the Ford symbol makes me a car. Those who follow Jesus are those who listen for His voice and obey. Many of those things to obey are in the Bible. When I hear Obama say when a hypothetical question was asked of him that he would support an abortion for one of his daughters because they shouldn't have to pay such a high price for a mistake.... I think that he does not hold a high value for human life like Jesus does. That was just too blatantly outside Christian values. I understand we make mistakes, but to say you believe in making a mistake is something completely different. Our reactions can be wrong, but our conscious choices show what we really believe.

Science is the greatest accomplishment of man.
03:08 PM on 02/26/2012
Is Obama a man of science or faith?? I now believe that you can't have both. One cannot live their life by faith and also reason and evidence. Most men of science do not believe in anything supernatural. We believe in natural physical laws and complete randomness. That is what you find at the center of Quantum Physics and the evolution of the universe. I see a future, where man will reject the religions of the past because the evidence is mounting up on their not being a God. We are making discoveries every day that points to a universe without the need of a God to create it. There are less and less places for a God to hide.

Let’s see now. In the 1800s scientists were advocating bleeding to cure illness. The Big Bang theory was science's step to eliminate God. Big Bang lends support to God being original cause. String theory and quantum theory are anything you want them to be (it is energy sometimes and mass other times). That takes more faith than believing in God.

By eliminating anything from consideration (supernatural), you abandon the principle of science.

And in the 21st century science has eradicated Smallpox and is close to doing the same with polio. Meanwhile, many Christians and other theists still advocate prayer as the one and only cure for all illnesses - with tragic results, as we have seen regularly. Especially for children.

You're aware that the Big Bang theory was first proposed by a theologian, right?

String and quantum theories and truly cannot comment on as, frankly, it's way beyond my understanding and area of interest. But, the claim that it takes more faith than believing is deities is a common tactic raised by theists when they oppose a science - evolution being an obvious example.

Tmiley, it is entirely possible to have both. For example, God could very well have used evolution to create the world. I voiced this to a very devout coworker and he said that couldn't be because the Bible says "A thousand years is like a day to God;" apparently my coworker is familiar with how metaphors work.

The President did not divide millionaires and billionaires from the 99%! There has been a battle over economic capitalism policy at the cost of fairness vs. balanced economic policy since the Civil War, and even before the Civil War. So, this false idea that the President is somehow dividing is a load of "COW POO!" President Bush gave an additional tax cut to the wealthy, while the wealthy was already happy with the previous cuts that Newt & and The Gang advocated and won during his revolution. To add to that, President Bush took our surplus and waged war, and not on the enemy, and took another part of the surplus and gave yet ANOTHER tax cut, that was more than anyone could have imagined getting. Even Republicans were concerned, if you know your history, at those additional cuts. Everyone knew they weren't paid for. So, President Obama trying to bring fairness back does not equal division. The fact is, he became a divider and the "other" because his skin is too brown for many on the right and some on the left for that matter. So lets get real...Yes, we have a budget issue, but that wan't because of the President...And, I think he is managing it as well as one could during this time....
