We'll be glued to our televisions on Sunday night to see what all the leading ladies are wearing to fashion's most important night of the year: the Oscars.

After showing you over 80 years worth of Best Actress winners and their gowns, we thought it was time to get a little more opinionated and weigh in on who's stood out sartorially over all the years.

Here are our picks for the best Oscars dresses of all time! Will anyone be joining their ranks come Sunday?

Grace Kelly defines elegant beauty, if you ask me.

Nicole and Michelle's dresses aren't pretty at all.

Some missing gowns for me:
- Joan Allen in orange Michael Kors in 2001
- Kate Winslet blue Badgley Mischka in 2005
- Cate Blanchett in metallic Armani Prive in 2007
They were unique and really jumped out at you without being off-putting (at least in my opinion)

Oops I forgot Hilary Swank's backless blue Guy Laroche in 2005

That's #1 in the video.

Where is Uma Thurman in lavender Prada? That look at the 1995 Oscars brought back the fashion house from being known primarily for leather goods - and did much to kick up the current frenzy of red carpet fashion obsession.

the pink calvin klein on paltrow is atrocious. i think the only reason why people include it in "best oscar gown" lists is because she had her princess moment and won it back then.

which is such a shame - cate blanchett should have won for elizabeth.

I hated that sugary dress with a passion then - and still do. It was Ralph Lauren, by the way. Calvin wouldn't go near that cupcake color!

late response, but shame on me for typing too quickly and not realizing it was ralph lauren!

she totally made up for it with that white tom ford, btw. SO gorgeous.

Is it just me? Or are formal evening gowns, in general, more ugly than what women generally tend to wear? In my opinion, the dresses they wear are seldom flattering. And that goes for the hairstyles too. Some women look good with their hair up. Some don't look as good.

I don't know why it is that women insist on looking worse for formal events. It's crazy. I think it's just another example of how women are suckers when it comes to listening to fashion advice. They will abandon common sense if they're convinced the fashion world knows more about beauty than they do.

Paltrow scored as both the best and the worst. The liquid gold dress she wore last year was absolutely gorgeous and it looked terrific on her. That pepto-pink prom dress was an unmitigated disaster.

I agree.  That pink thing when she won was tragic.

It didn't even fit right. It was sort of hanging off her chest.

this article seems to suggest that most of the "most beautiful Oscar dresses" come from the last 15 years. This is a clearly prejudiced piece by someone who thinks people won't bother to actually researach the dresses of the last several decades and realize that you can't narrow them down and that the subject is, frankly, too subjective.

Goodness, stop that shouting.

It is possible to have beautifully dressed movie stars (movies also produce many jobs) and help the homeless at the same time. Why not adjust the tax laws so that bankers and hedge fund managers pay the same tax rate I do (38+%) rather than the capital gain rate on most of their income (15%). Why not fix the tax laws so that corporations pay their fair share. Think how many homeless people that extra tax revenue could help.

I'm all for outrage, but I think yours is misdirected.

Opulence in hard times is a slap in the face to those suffering. It underlines the disconnect between those living the American dream and those living the American reality. This said, during the depression such opulence offered the masses a brief escape from their pain (fancy Busby Berkley productions and so on), so I suppose it does serve a purpose, an unimportant one mind you when compared to what could have been accomplished by the stars by choosing less expensive clothing and donating the rest. Example 200 x $10,000 is $2 million, whereas 200 x $1,000 is $200,000, leaving $1.8 million for charity.

Lots to like here, but I have to disagree on the Gwyneth Paltrow dress. I've always though it was ill fitting on top and just too pink. IMO it would have worked better if it was a tad richer shade. And her hair was too severe.

I always thought Halle's dress was designed to looked like she'd just climbed out of a flower covered bed. Mission accomplished. That's my favorite Oscar dress of all that I've seen and it's the most memorable. Nicole looked great in the chartreuse dress, too. I'd love that in my closet.

Who cares?! Teetering on the edge of war with Iran and North Korea, stuck in a losing situation in Afghan..., unemployment, political corruption, immigration, drugs, crime, the budget, ending good programs because of the budget and we as taxpaying citizens of what could be a better place, still give a **** about millionaire actresses gowns.

So feel free to leave the style section. Sometimes we need a break from all the things you mentioned.
12:42 PM on 02/25/2012
well, it is only one person's opinion. some of these dresses were trashed at the time such as that spaghetti strapped pink thing that Paltrow wore and Hepburn and Kelly wore better examples of style than what you are showing.......I am old enuf to remember!
