Oscars 2012: The Green Nominees -- Brad Pitt, George Clooney And More

Who Are The Greenest 2012 Oscars Nominees?

On Sunday, February 26th, the best and brightest in Hollywood will don their haute couture and make their way down the red carpet to be acknowledged for their contributions to the fine arts at the 84th Annual Academy Awards. And while all the nominees are stars in their own rights, a select few deserve to have their contributions to Mother Earth acknowledged as well.

Hollywood is not necessarily considered an eco-friendly Mecca. In fact, the film industry is one of the largest contributors to carbon emissions in Los Angeles. The issue stems from electricity usage, air flight, and the need to have everything at hand, at all times. Director Suzanne Bier said that on the set of her movie "Things We Lost in the FIre" a truck filled with special camera lenses would follow her and sit idling until it was needed. ""It was so nice to have all the lenses in a truck outside, so that when I needed a lens I could just ask for it," Bier told The Independent.

Yet green activism is a cause close to the hearts of many celebrities on a personal level, and this year's Oscars boasts some of the biggest names in the Hollywood environmental movement. From actors like Brad Pitt, who narrates a green design show on PBS and runs a green building foundation, to the contemplative documentary “If a Tree Falls” about the Earth Liberation Front, nature and the environment are hot topics at this year’s prestigious awards show.
