Pat Knight Rant: Lamar Basketball Coach Rips Team After Loss To Stephen F. Austin (VIDEO)

02/24/12 06:12 PM ET  AP

BEAUMONT, Texas — Lamar coach Pat Knight has torn into his players in a way that might remind some of his father.

On Wednesday night, after his team lost 62-52 to Stephen F. Austin, the younger and usually more subdued Knight pulled no punches in an extended rant that prompted comparisons to Bob Knight, his dad and a legendary coach known for his fiery temper.

"We've got the worst group of seniors right now that I've ever been associated with," Pat Knight said. "Their mentality is awful. Their attitude is awful. It's been their (custom) for the last three years. To come out in a game like this, with no emotion and flat, it's terrible."

Knight is in his first year at Lamar, a Southland Conference team, after being let go by Texas Tech. The Cardinals are 17-11 with three league games remaining. He said several times during Wednesday's postgame news conference that he's at the school to "clean things up" and that next year things will be different when the current seniors are gone.

"These guys are stealing money by being on scholarship with their approach to things," he said.

He said no one has stepped up to help lead the team in a better direction and says there's an "infestation" of players that are difficult to coach.

"When I played, if you acted the way some of these guys did, you got shoved in a locker with a forearm up against your neck and told: `You don't do that. That's not how we do things at Indiana,' and that's what we need," Knight said while not specifying who did that when he was playing for the Hoosiers under his father.

After he calls his seniors "the worst," he goes down the box score and reads off several players' statistics and said that they have an "attitude problem."

After that he gets much more personal.

"We've had problems with these guys off the court, on the court, classroom, drugs ...," Knight said. "If you act this way in the real world, you're going to be homeless, without a job."

Knight's rant begins when senior Mike James is at the podium beginning to answer a question. The coach stalks up to the podium while telling James to leave.

"All right, let's go, I'm next," Knight said. "Because you don't have a clue what it takes to win."

Messages left with a Lamar spokesman seeking comment on Knight's rant weren't immediately returned Friday afternoon.

The Cardinals clinched a spot in the Southland Conference tournament for the first time since the 2007-08 season on Feb. 15. But Knight believes they've been slacking off since then, and is upset in the way they've lost their last two games.

"You just can't do all that BS and then expect to be a good team and win games," he said. "And if people have a problem with me being so harsh about it, I don't care. I've come here to clean something up, and that's the bottom line. We've got to get a better personality on this team, a better mindset, and that's where recruiting comes into place."

He feels like they're content to simply make the tournament and said that being their "monumental achievement" is sad.

"If they show up the way they did tonight, there's no way we'll win another game," Knight said.

Lamar faces Sam Houston State on Saturday night.

Knight's father was fired at Indiana in 2000 for what school officials there called a "pattern of unacceptable behavior." Always known for his temper there, his biggest blowups came when he threw a chair across the court and was later accused of wrapping his hands around a player's neck.

Clean what up - dude you are at a school that doesn't even count - never heard of the place - someone needs to remind him - his old man only got away with this type of cr ap because he coached a legendary program to three national championships - I don't see one in this guys future.

Chewing out your team doesn't carry weight when they aren't paid. Pay them, like Kentucky.

Perhaps the coach learned the boorishness of his father but got none of the coaching ability. Sounds to me as though he is making excuses for his incompetency as a coach. A real coach would take care of this behind closed doors. If you have a problem with a player, bench 'em. If the player is a real screwup and it is possible, jerk his scholarship. Whatever you do, don't put your kids on trial in front of everyone the way he is doing. A poor workman blames his tools, in this case, his team.

Maybe this class of seniors are the worst group of seniors Baby Knight has ever seen, but a bigger issue of concern for Lamar ought to be whether they want this coach as a representative of the university and responsible for coaching Lamar students. My prediction is that if Lamar doesn't take action, this situation will get even worse next year after these supposed bad seniors are long gone.

Yeah it's always the coaches fault. How dare he hold people having their educations paid for to play sports accountable.

How do you know he hasn't been dealing with it behind doors? Maybe it has reached the point where they need publicly blasted.

You yank enough scholarships, you don't have a team. Like it or not, coaches are paid to win these days, most schools do not really care about molding boys into men and scholars, just win baby.

If they are indeed skipping class, skipping practice, smoking dope all the time, and in general have their heads up their rears, when you "send4pizza" one of these players might be the delivery driver.

Send 4..you got it right..college ball players are NOT living "la vida loca" like the nba lifestyle allows. Knight's verbally abusing in the national media 21 year old like this is the kind of "leadership" bullies employ.....To paraphrase Hanks Williams Jr...."its a family #%!*^ tradition."

This guy belongs in the prison industry, and Lamar should find him interviews there right away.

The truth is Bob Knight had great graduation rates among his players -- black and white. And if his son doesn't see that kind of talent on his team, what's wrong with stating facts? None of these guys will be in the NBA so too bad they didnt have a coach who pushed them to excel on and off the court. Now, they'll barely graduate, probably can't read or write much and end up in prison or dead...those are cold hard facts. Straight no chaser.

Pat Knight I give you a standing ovation for being up front and telling the truth and not doing what many schools and coaches do by letting the players run the asylum.

The word Coach Knight speaks about his players may leave some to think, "Finally, someone has the courage to set aside PC, and speak the truth...call it as it is." But what difference does that make if you're not waling your talk?

Coach, someone once said, "If you want them to be a man, you have to show them a man." Why outline all of those ongoing grievences, and then not only play them, but you start them? All while those kids who work hard and follow the rules are sitting the bench. That a confused and convoluted message. Bench them...preferably in street clothes. Not only do you send the message that their behaviors are not representative of your institution, but you remove the possibility of a "coaches waffle"...letting your desire for a championship overrule good judgement.

If you really don't think they should be coddled, then STOP coddling them. Don't play people who don't listen to, or respect, you.

If only these kids had a famous Daddy that could get them into a coaching job. Then they wouldn't have to worry about being homeless.

Abusive bully of a father > Abusive bully of a son.....don't need Dr. Freud to understand this...stating his players will "wind up homeless" for being typically distracted, hedonistic 21 year olds is nuts...
