Russia Election Poll Predicts Putin's First-Round Election Victory

AP  |  By Posted: 02/24/12 03:23 AM ET  |  Updated: 02/24/12 06:54 AM ET

MOSCOW (AP) — Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is expected to be elected Russia's new president with two-thirds of the vote, reversing a drop in popularity following December's fraud-tainted parliamentary election, according to a leading independent poll published Friday.

Lev Gudkov, the chief of poll company Levada Center, said the latest data showed Putin may win up to 66 percent of ballots in the first round of the March 4 presidential election.

The data indicated Putin's fortunes have changed dramatically following the parliamentary election that stoked massive public protests against his rule. He needs to win more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff that would tarnish his 'father-of-the nation' image.

Putin won his previous two presidential terms in 2000 and 2004 in the first round, but moved into the prime minister's job in 2008 due to term limits. He has remained Russia's No. 1 leader, but his support has dropped amid growing public irritation with massive corruption and growing social inequality.

Levada's data indicated that a run-off is "practically impossible," Gudkov's deputy, Alexei Grazhdankin told The Associated Press. "Any dramatic change in the situation is unlikely to happen in the remaining week," he added.

Two other leading poll agencies had earlier predicted an outright victory for Putin. The opposition had pinned all hopes on a run-off.

Levada's nationwide poll of 1,600 people was conducted a few days ago and had a margin of error of no more than 3.7 percentage points.

While Putin seems all but certain to win the vote, there has been a steady decline in his popularity — a trend pollsters describe as irreversible.

According to the Levada poll, Putin's approval rating has dropped from a peak of 85 percent in mid-2008 to 65 percent this month. Polls highlighted voters' increasing weariness with Putin's personality and his apparent inability to deliver on his promises, even though his campaign seems to have "put a growing mistrust with authorities on hold."

Respondents voiced concern over Putin's lavish promises of funding for nearly every part of the economy ahead of the vote. "High expectations soon create disappointment with the fact that these promises are impossible to implement," Gudkov said.

Expected hikes in utilities tariffs, gasoline prices and inflation are likely to cause "a rise of social instability" by the fall, the researchers warned.

Sixty-five percent is not too shabby. On a good day with the wind to his back , Obama can garner maybe 45%.

Maybe as part of the popularity focus, he would return abducted children after his country signed the Hague Convention....this would a a good sign that he is trying to be honest.

I am live in Russia, and Putin is the best leader for us. American and European newspapers lie for you. They support the stand-alone opposition, completely not popular in RF.

As someone who has never lived in Russia or really studied the matter I can only speak of what I have read and heard from friends who are from Russia. I seem to get the feeling that most of them, not all of them, feel as if the elections in Russia are rigged and nothing but a ruse put on by the men in charge to give people hope. Again, I don't really know anything except what I hear and read, but I can say that anyone who thinks we in the US have a free election and there is no corruption is also living in a fantasy land. People are beginning to get arrested and find more and more cases of voter fraud right here in the "land of the free." Either way I still cast my vote because if I didn't than obviously I wouldn't be able to complain.

Too bad Bill Clinton is unable to run a third term. We need a leader with vision, not a leader with darkness.

Putin had been popular in Russia for one simply reason. After the fall of Soviet Union, he put Russia on the "map" again. Being an ethnic Russian myself, I could not believe when I saw the life in Russia getting better and better. Yes, there is a corruption and poor people. However, the country is in a state of prosperity. I opened many newspapers, and there were tons of job opportunities. There were also many opportunities for education. I do believe Putin's politics contributed to this prosperity a lot. I lived here all my life and consider myself to be an American as well, I cannot believe how fast we all are turning into a third world nation. There are millions of Americans who had worked all their lives. Now, they cannot find any jobs. They cannot afford to put any food on their tables. People in big corporations and in government do not care about these people. USA needs someone like Putin to bring its American dream and prosperity back, but without any limitation on one's right to express himself. Putin is not bad for Russia at all. After all, he would not have been that "popular" before.

Putin is not bad for Russia at all.

That may be but isn't capitalism and the free enterprise system the real reason for their prosperity? Can one imagine how far they would have been today if they had never got hoodwinked by communism? Their democracy is a make believe thing today with an ex KGB flavor but we can only hope sometime in the future they will become a real democracy? The government is definitely not with us on so many issues that it is reminiscent of the cold war rhetoric; Nyet, Nyet, and another Nyet. Syria for instance..........

I do agree with you on most points you are making. However, this "KGB flavor" might have kept Russia together. I have been to one of Putin's speeches in St. Petersburg. His strong presense was felt from a mile away. People were really happy to hear his speech. His look was "drilling and hypnotizing." I definitely would not want to be interrogated by him. Putin is a remarkable man. At one point of time, he could not even get a job. He holds very impressive titles in dsudo. He still frequents martial arts clubs in Moscow and St. Petersburg where he teaches children how to fight. His list of accomplishments is endless. Now, he is becoming is less popular because people do realize he has his own agenda, and he is more like a dictator. However, I believe his major accomplishment was that he kept Russia together all these years. Because of his former KGB training, I have to say there is a limitation on one's ability to express himself. He shuts down newspapers that state something bad about his politics. By the same token, many people are able to afford vacations, houses, and cars. As you said, it is a free enterprise. Can it be that he contributed a lot to this free enterprise as well? Many Russians feel this way. Despite what our American media makes us believe, Putin is still very popular. As I stated before, there are good reasons for it.

That's the kind of leader we need in this country. Instead, we have a community organizer vs a financial manipulator, and two career politicians in the second tier.

If you want, we can give you Vladimir Zhirinovski :)) He has some good ideas of how to build a strong state. If he starts to falter, at least you will have plenty to laugh about. He is a great comedian.
