Time Yo Decido

Time Magazine made headlines this week for the bold claim made by the magazine's latest cover story. The cover, titled "Yo Decido. Why Latinos Will Pick The Next President," features images of of multiple Latino voters. Or does it?

According to New York Magazine and The OC Weekly, at least one person photographed for the cover does not identify himself as Latino. He is half Chinese and half white. Michael Schennum, the gentleman featured in the top row just behind the letter "M," wrote on his Facebook page, "They never told me what it was for or [asked] if I was Latino." Schennum is a staff photographer for the Arizona Republic.

The magazine said that Time photographer Marco Grob spent a weekend in February "chronicling Latino voters in Phoenix, Arizona." He photographed more than 150 people in just three days.

Time Magazine told New York Magazine, "We took steps to ensure that everyone self-identified as Latino, that they are registered voters, and that they would be willing to answer our questions. If there was a misunderstanding with one of our subjects, we apologize."

Time was also the subject of a recent review by "The Daily Show's" Jon Stewart. Stewart lampooned the magazine for selecting significantly lighter cover stories for its U.S. edition when compared to its international counterparts.

Oh no, get the torches and pitchforks. Latinos should camp out in front of Time's building 24/7/365 until the company is forced out of business for committing such a mortal sin.

Funny that a group who claims all humans are defended from two people living in a garden, likes to assign worth based on skin color, facial features and what language you know. We're all brothers or we aren't...

When you include the word "if" in your apology, then it isn't a real apology.

One comment... although in the U.S. they don't consider Brazilians as "latinos", down here in Latin America (I'm from Mexico) we consider them "Latinoamericanos", since we share common roots and heritages. With that said, although my country might be the 1st of Spanish speakers (with 115 million), Brazil is far greater with 190 million (Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro both 25 million each, a tad smaller than Mexico City with 29 million).

As if the title "You Decido" wasn't stupid enough. This magazine is getting down to brochure size. I will not miss it.

confuse a houli this month.tell him yes, you are from Spain.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, my nephew who is Mexican-American always gets confused with being a Pacific Islander. He has a daughter whose mom is Chinese-Americanl, and now his little girl REALLY throws people off. I'm also Mexican-American but have light brown hair, green eyes and fair skin. I always get asked "why I'm so light skinned when my ancestry is from Mexico." Ugh! It's the new millenium, folks here in the U.S. need to get over their need to pigeon hole ethnic groups. In the end, we're all just PEOPLE.

The implication of the "Yo Decido" banner on Time's cover is that 1) people don't sepak English, so how are they informing their opinion? 2) US citizens don't have the right to vote 3) So-called "Hispanics" have a hidden agenda, but what could that be? War with Iran? Funding our closest Democratic nieghbor? Allowing Mexico to appropriate illegally lands in Asia, or some crazy place? Not sending the looters of the economy to jail the NYC Banksters/ Hedge Fundster? See the idiocy? Good distration
12:00 PM on 02/27/2012
You really got all that out of the cover?

I thought it would be about the fact that there are more Latino citizens now than ever and that will definitely affect how the voting goes, just as an increase in any other demographic would affect who gets elected.

Silly me.

There is no such thing as a Hispanic or Latino American. this is a Republican and Mexican American poly to offset the fact that Black Americans are the real largest minority group in the US(30mil versus 16mil Mexican Americans). The only common factor that is common for this alleged group is that the common language is Spanish. There is no common culture nor even common holiday for this group. Media such as the Times contain to try to make all people south of Texas as some kind of monolithic unit with titles such as "fastest growing minority" etc. Reality is that this is a concept in there is a gathering of midgets who stand on each other's shoulders (Cuban /Puerto Ricans /central americans, and the base is Mexican's) while telling that single entity Black 'I am taller than you" Why not form an European minority based on the race and geographical ancestry and eliminate groups like German Americans, Irish Americans etc?

logancirclelos-you write as if you are black, if you are not then I apologize, and the same to all black people. I have noticed for the past twenty years or so how AA people are worried about their "minority" status. No one is taking anything away from you...why be afraid and jealous of hispanics? It is what it is and nothing will change that. Besides speaking Spanish we are all descendents of Spain and Portugal who are Hispanic. A lot of our ancestory also comes from the Moor civilization. Our blood is Hispanic and we recogonize that in each other. We are who we are in our ancestory even tho it has been deluted by the Iriish, Chinese, French, (my family) and many other nationalites. Our blood runs red with Hispanics pride and even tho some of us call ourselves Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Coloumbians, or Peruvians, in the end we are all Hispanics. But we who live in America and are born and raised consider ourselves Americans first and foremost and hold no alligence to another flag besides our beloved American flag.

Latino = Latin = Any person who speaks a romance language = Romanian, French, Spanish & Italian.

Hispano = Hispanic = Any person born in the new world (western hemisphere) who speaks spanish or is a descent of hispanic. Those people can be Native Americans, Euro, African, Asian descent or mixed.

Those who refused to be call Hispanic is because they know they are native americans by majority or all. It's time to embrace that and stop the "I'm Latino" self labeling.

SOY HISPANA!

Nope they are Brazilians who speak Portuguese not Spanish. They are of course link with speaking a romance language but no. They can call themselves "latinos" which is what most "LABELERS" like to do instead of identifying people by their nationality.
