Freetown Village

Established in 1984 by educator Ophelia Wellington, Freetown Village is a free-floating living history museum based in Indianapolis' old Fourth Ward. While the organization doesn't have a permanent location -- a permanent site is in development -- Freetown Village's exhibits and musical events take place at different locations in Indianapolis, including parks, theaters and schools. The museum focuses on African-American life in post-Civil War Indiana, complete with costumed actors, singers and storytellers. Many events are public, and schools, churches and organizations may also book the group for private shows; see Freetown Village's official site for a current calendar of events. During Black History Month, Freetown Village will hold free performances of the Freetown Village Singers at the Indianapolis Artsgarden and Anderson Zion Baptist Church on Feb. 24 and 25, respectively. Other programs offered throughout the year include craft workshops, plays and a summer camp for children 5 to 14.
