Hugo Chavez Cancer: Venezuela President Arrives In Cuba For Urgent Surgery

Chavez

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Venezuela's military high command reaffirmed its loyalty to President Hugo Chavez on Saturday in a public show of support a day after Chavez's departure for Cuba to undergo surgery removing a possibly cancerous tumor.

Military leaders said they were praying for Chavez's health and were confident of a full recovery.

"With you, everything; without you, nothing," Navy Adm. Anibal Brito said during a ceremony in the port of La Guaira to inaugurate a naval training vessel named after independence leader Simon Bolivar.

Military officers have used the phrase in the past to signal allegiance to Chavez, who is scheduled to have his third operation since last June, when a baseball-size tumor was removed from his pelvic region.

The leftist president was given a clean bill of health last fall and had declared himself cancer-free, but last week Cuban doctors found a new, smaller growth in the same part of his body. Chavez has said the growth is probably malignant but hasn't revealed what kind of cancer he has.

During 13 years in power, Chavez has sought to shore up support in the military from the rank-and-file up to the high command, mindful of the country's history of coups d'etats.

Chavez himself led a failed coup in 1992 that catapulted him into the public consciousness and paved the way for his election in 1998. He survived an unsuccessful putsch against his own presidency in 2002.

In recent days, he has accused his political rivals of intending to spread rumors of discontent and division within the military during his absence from the country, and trying to stir intrigue about his health in an election year in which he is seeking a fourth term.

On Saturday, the presence of the military high command and Vice President Elias Jaua at the ceremony sent a message of unity.

"Today our commander in chief is here with us," Defense Minister and Gen. Henry Silva told cadets scheduled to sail on the Simon Bolivar. "His spirit as a revolutionary soldier is here."

Chavez, 57, flew to staunch ally Cuba on Friday after traveling by motorcade through the capital of Caracas.

Photos released by the Venezuelan government and brief video aired on state television showed the socialist leader being greeted at the Havana airport by Cuban President Raul Castro.

Chavez said he planned to meet with Cuban doctors for medical tests on Saturday. The surgery is expected to take place early next week.

"I have faith that everything will go well," Chavez told Venezuelan state television by telephone late Friday.

He said he brought with him a box of books to help pass the time, including the Spanish-language version of "TNT: The Power Within You," a self-help book by Claude Bristol and Harold Sherman. The book's subtitle reads: "How to release the forces inside you & get what you want!"

"It's a book about the power of will," Chavez said. "It helped me a lot."

Cuba is a paradise on Earth....ever met a Cuban tourist at any airport ? ever met anyone moving to Cuba ?
Chavez getting medical treatment from Cubans shows his distrust of Venezuelans...

Poor Chavez, going to Cuba for medical help is like going to a vacation in Afghanistan. These communists don't really have a clue. Except, of course, the communists in USA, they praise Cuba and Venezuela but you will catch them dead in a Cuban hospital. Just try to imagine Sean Penn and the other idiot, what's his name?..Oh yes, Michael Moore with terminal cancer...? How about our dear president, and his wife Marie Anthoniette? Would they go to Cuba or will be treated in a Capitalist hospital in the USA? Will the Obamas will have to go to the burocracy of his Obamacare or he will use his Cadillac Health care?

Progressives and Communists, stop lying to you self, be real for a moment.

Hugo Chavez is a strong populist leader with great support from his constituents. His leadership was necessary to make a transition from a foreign controlled oligarchy to democratic socialism. I hope the United Socialist Party of Venezuela has been seriously busy putting together a viable contingency in case the president does not recover. Social and economic change will take more than one man and more than one life-time to achieve. Solidarity with Venezuela and the United Socialist Party. Good luck, Presidente Chavez!

"With you, everything; without you, nothing,"-That's say it all. And what a horrible thing to say. That is the mentality that dictators create in their people. He is God, the Master. Without him nothing.

Never mind Chavez is a vulgar, mediocre, Castro As* kisser pupett.

To all of you wishing ill will toward Chavez during this time, a little research would show you that he has done for his country what few leaders have has the ball* to do in this era of corporate rape. In Canada, Jack Layton held the same basic principals as does Chavez and those principals are rooted in the truth that the money people pay to the government belongs to the people who payed it and is the be used for the people who payed it and not to multinational corporations bent on wasting it on hookers, cigars, booze and fine meals.
Having said that, take a look at our Glorious Leader, Harper, and see if he holds a candle to Chavez.

You are quite right! Not "few", but NO Venezuelan leader has ever given his country the highest crime rate AND the highest inflation rate in South America at the SAME TIME!!! Nor has any other Venezuelan leader presided over a DECLINE in oil production like Chavez has done...

No other Venezuelan President has ever felt the need to make an issue of his opponent's Jewish parents in a campaign before, either...

It rather says something that his own country doesn't have the medical know-how to deal with his problems... Or doesn't he trust them?
It almost seems the Universe is trying to tell him something.

Odd that a moderator would skew a story with personal biases.Cuba is known for it's outstanding healthcare services as is evidenced by the life expectancy of the Cuban people.
07:06 PM on 02/26/2012
I'm Cuban and you are lying. Cuba do not have an Oustanding Health Care, that is a filthy communist propaganda to fool people like you. Give me a brake!...Cuban hospitals are mantain by the cuban exiles in Miami that send medicines to their family.

The life expectancy of cuban people is the same as the ones in a third world country. Nobody in their sane mind, will go to Cuba for health care, only communists like Chavez that love to make propaganda for Castro, his master.

Stop spreading lies.

If Cuban medicine is so good. Why is he going back for treatment 8 months later? Couldn't they fix him 8 months ago?

You mean one less leader who doesn't kiss US @55? Don't worry. His replacement probably won't be any more willing to have US "advisors" telling him how to run his country.

Good luck Hugo. You have such an huge audience of haters in the US, because these poor blokes are all fed with hate stories by the 01%, the elite that dominates all Americans and programmes them to hate the enemies of the 01%, who stand in their way.

That about sums it up, Sunil. A media that's almost exclusively owned by corporations, a government that's almost exclusively rich guys, and still they can't see it.

The US was happier when Latin American was ruled by their fascistic School of the Americas stooges. Anyone who works for the good of their people and not the USA's interests is an enemy.

Is obama planning on visiting his cousin while he's in cuba for surgery?
They got really close 3 years ago and have been trading leadership secrets ever since.

The US has been blockading medical supplies to Cuba for decades. I guess they don't want to see what a decent health care system could do if it wasn't crippled by lack of basic stuff like bandages, simple drugs and modern medical equipment.
