Sacha Baron Cohen Oscar Ban: Academy Awards Will Let Star Walk Red Carpet

Sacha Baron Cohen

First Posted: 02/25/2012 11:41 am Updated: 02/25/2012 11:41 am

Our long national nightmare is finally over. Late Friday night, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences lifted its "ban" on Sacha Baron Cohen, meaning the comic will be allowed to walk the red carpet at the Oscars on Sunday dressed as General Admiral Aladeen, his character from the upcoming comedy "The Dictator."

"VICTORY!" Cohen Aladeen tweeted with a photo of himself holding a gold-plated gun and two Oscar tickets (click below).

Though while Cohen-as-Aladeen triumphed over "the Zionist snakes of Hollywood," the victory didn't come without a price. According to TheWrap, many in the AMPAS are still upset about Cohen's planned red carpet stunt and don't feel its appropriate. Still, officials want Cohen's representatives and Paramount (the studio releasing "The Dictator") to provide details of Cohen's plans, so that proper security measures can be implemented.

"Do we have concerns?" said an Academy Awards source to TheWrap. "Yes. Did we say, 'Please stunt the red carpet?' No."

Of course, whether Cohen even pulls off this stunt remains to be seen. After all, he might just show up as himself. "Only Sacha knows," said the Academy source.

"The Dictator" is out in theaters on May 11.

Why does HP keep sending me to "moviefone" where "moviefone" wants to use my current location? What does that even mean anyway?

Puleeeze! I told my daughter I would stay in my RV tonight and watch a movie as the AWs are such a boring, over-the-top, over-long, self promotion of all that is bad with Hollywood. Then I read that Sacha Baron Cohen was going to show up and maybe even spoof the Oscars. Now, that is worth watching!! One Friday night in 1971, coming home from work with my wife, we suddenly realized we were on the inside lane amongst nothing but long black limosines in my little 1970 Toyota Corolla. There was no way out and when we got to the Red Carpet, in front of the grandstands, two guys ran out and opened the doors for my wife and I while everyone in the stands was wondering who would come to the Awards in a little Green Toyota. My wife said, What do we do?" I said, "Let's see how far we can take this. It's not our fault we couldn't get out of the line of limos and they should have had the lanes marked better, anyway!" I had my 10 seconds of fame as I stood and waved to the crowd before we were pushed back into to the car and told to get the h... out of there. Guess we weren't good enough for the Hollywood crowd! We had a good laugh about that over the years.

Can't stand the guy.

Desperate men do desperate things....like dressing in character to promote an upcoming movie which I'm sure not one person who watches the Oscars is the audience that would even attend a Sasha Baron Cohen movie.

I don't know why, but this guy gets on my nerves. I have not seen any of his movies, but what I have seen I find obnoxious. Am I the only one??
12:58 PM on 02/26/2012
Yes, he is obnoxious, but he is also funny.

I used to have a hard time watching his Ali G stuff, but Borat is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Bruno less so, but still good.

I was going to see Borat, but was a little queasy about how he kind of trapped people into situations they didn't fully understand. I know some people really unmasked themselves as complete idiots...

He makes me laugh. The boring oscars needs him. Watched Bruno for the first time a couple of nights ago and thought I would die of embarrassment but also thought it was sheer genius.

His characters, debasing and provocative, are reflective of his warped comedic sensiblities, sbc, totally about self-promotion.

Listen to me carefully; Sasha: Get - out - of - character, every now and again. Got it? (Lest you forget who you really are.)

Can't we have a little decorum at this event? Must some twit decide to flaunt the traditions so he can be "important"? Knowing the long memories (and power) of many of the people associated with the Academy, perhaps discretion needs to be exercised by actors and their phony alter egos.

this event does not deserve decorum....wow so scared of the "Academy" ...really?? :)

Sacha Baron Cohen is far and away the most objectionable character I have ever seen on TV. I disliked Benny Hill, but this man is in another league altogether. He makes one ashamed to be a human being.

I am so glad to see so many agree with my assessment of him. Yuck!

Hope he doesn't burn a Quran.

the fact that he might show up in character would be the only reason I would watch the show.
