Jeremy Evans Wins Slam Dunk Contest

KYLE HIGHTOWER   02/25/12 11:24 PM ET  AP

ORLANDO, Fla. — Utah's Jeremy Evans won the Slam Dunk Contest at the NBA's All-Star Saturday night festivities.

Evans, who got into the competition as a replacement for injured New York guard Iman Shumpert, earned 29 percent of 3 million text message votes cast by fans.

This was the first year that fans had total control of voting, a major tweak from past competitions.

Evans earned the win over Houston's Chase Budinger, Indiana's Paul George and Minnesota's Derrick Williams.

Evans dunked with a camera on his head, dunked two basketballs while jumping over a seated assistant and then donned a Karl Malone jersey while dunking over mailman-dressed comedian Kevin Hart.

This year's contest lasted three rounds, but the four participants had only two minutes per round to complete a single dunk.

International streetball legend named Kadour Ziani has been doing some spectacular dunks for nearly 20 years world-wide, that would make even the legendary MJ or Dominique proud. He’s only 5‘10 but has an incredible 56 inch vertical leap, proven by regularly leaping over automobiles and up to four spectators on 360 dunk attempts.

Famous for his “Kick the Rim” and his double reverse (that right,... double reverse) windmill dunks, Ziani even now in his 40‘s still puts on quite an exhibition in slam dunks. He even once drew world-wide acclaim by taking on and out-dunking the entire And 1 Mixtape crew in a dunk contest back in 2006. Unfortunately fans in the USA haven’t really been exposed to Ziani, but he undoubtedly is an international superstar in the world of streetball.

People have called these new gimmicky dunks "creative." That's absurd, it's a complete lack of creativity in dunking that would lead someone to say "hey what if we turn off the lights and I wear a glow-in-the-dark jersey!? That'll be AWESOME!" It's really un-fun. But the biggest problem is that nobody who's a great dunker is in the contest. Did you see the numbers they showed? Budinger has 6 dunks on the season. Lebron and Wade get 5/game. So do many other good players and great athletes. NBA needs to show its fans more appreciation and mandate some good dunkers be in the contest, this was boring.

But really...... HP nothing on Daytona?
I know it's nascar and all, but racing is racing.
The biggest race for American automakers.
OK Toyota is in there now too since about 2008.
But to Chevrolet, Ford and Chrysler.
This was there day since the late 1950's.

PS: Maybe electric powered "stock cars" could be the new trend?

I beg to differ. Stand on turn three of Daytona, then wonder if you can maneuver a car three wide around it at over 150 mph.

So what would you call Bobsled racing at the Olympics?
Try sitting a car and going as fast as the car is able for 500 miles.
You probably get tired after going 150 miles nonstop at the speed limit.
I raced 30 lap main events in stock class (about 5k for a decent car) and inside temps could reach 135 degrees.
For about 45 minutes.
Sorry but it takes stamina, skill and concentration to win a car race.
NTM good equipment but it's not for the NON athlete as you describe..

I knew that..... but Daytona is the great American Race.
Kinda like not talking about who won the masters, Indy 500 or the like.
Anyway
finally' saw the finish a few minutes ago.
Unbelievable fire and crash but Nascar fixed it and they completed the race.
And it was worth it.
Biffle should have gone with Jr out of turn 4 and he would have won w/ jr 2nd.
Biff better remember that next time.
PS" to all of those who blame Jaun Montoya for this.......try going 160MPH and having the rear end lock up......as you go into the turn.
Which happens to have a jet dryer running the wall.
Sorry If I bored you.

Several years ago, I believe Jason Richardson was in the dunk contest this year (and it was still fun) they did a thing where the dunkers spun some wheel and had to try to emulate a great dunk from the past. Now it looks like it takes the creativity out of it, but in lieu of invention, innovation on previous great dunks was a lot of fun!
Jumping over a stationary motorcycle, especially when someone jumped over a car last year, was a terrible attempt at manufacturing interest. They need to outlaw props that are stupid and make these people throw down good dunks like Vince Carter did.

But can he consistently make free throws?

64%? Maybe a little less high flying and a little more practice from the line.

Don't get me wrong. It's all fun and exciting, dunking. But dunks don't win games (usually). Free throws do. Players in the NBA have moved further and further away from mastering the fundamentals and focus on the spectacular.
