Playing a somewhat deranged version of himself, Depp had asked Warwick Davis for some advice on playing Rumplestiltskin in a movie. However, when he discovered that Davis was friends with Ricky Gervais, Depp's thoughts turned from method acting to revenge.
This version of Depp couldn't get over the roasting he received from Gervais at the 2011 Golden Globes Awards, when Gervais mercilessly ribbed Depp's film "The Tourist." Some of his barbs had obviously hit home.
So Depp decided to see if Gervais could take it as well as dish it out, and told some jokes of his own. "What is nastier than Ricky Gervais' jokes?" he asked, before delivering the obvious punchline: "His teeth."
He even told a joke on behalf of his "Tourist" co-star Angelina Jolie: "Tell Ricky Gervais that me and Brad have a picture of him on our mantelpiece. 'Cause it keeps the kids way from the fire."
Job done, Depp decided to make a suitably dramatic, diva-ish exit, but finding no puppies to kick he was reduced to knocking over the trash can and up-ending the fruit bowl.
"Life's Too Short" airs Sundays at 10:30 p.m. EST on HBO.
