Santorum: Religious Freedom Is Not Supported By President Obama and Hillary Clinton

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/27/2012 10:06 am Updated: 02/27/2012 10:23 am

LIVONIA, Mich. -- Rick Santorum continued to talk about the separation of church and state one day before Michigan voters go to the polls on Tuesday, but insisted that this was not a distraction from discussing the economy and jobs but rather a core part of the argument he is making about economic and religious freedom.

Santorum also came close to calling Secretary of State HiIlary Clinton the "first lady," and then said that she and President Barack Obama are not for religious freedom but rather talk about "freedom of worship." Santorum said this term is an indication that Obama and Clinton want to tell churches and people of faith how they can live their lives when they are not in their place of worship.

Here's a transcript from this portion of Santorum's speech to the local chamber of commerce, in a hall next to the Basilica of St. Mary, an Antiochian Orthodox parish.

"You hear so much about separation of church and state. I'm for separation of church and state. The state has no business telling what the church to do. The separation of church and state that our founders believed in, which is what I just described, has now been turned on its head. And now it's the church, people of faith, who have no right to come to the public square and express their points of view, or practice their faith outside of their church.

"Listen to what the president and the first—not the first lady but the secretary of state said, when they talk about the freedom of religion. They don't use that term all the time. They use a different term: freedom of worship. We're here at a hall at St. Mary's. You go in the hall over there, you go in the sanctuary, you can talk all you want. You can have your religious faith. But if you come here, and you try to practice your faith, uh uh. No, then the government's going to tell you what to do. Is that how you interpret the First Amendment? Freedom of worship is not just what you do within the sanctuary. It's how you practice your faith outside the sanctuary. And at least in the America I grew up in, that used to be around; that was freedom of religion.

"All the reporters are about to say, 'There goes Santorum, talking about social issues again.' No, I'm talking about freedom. This is an election about freedom. It's about whether you buy into government can do things better for you than you can do for yourself. I don't buy into that. I've never bought into that."

A real fire and brimstone solution for the economy?
If God is an integral solution for the perilous state of our nation,
Why is Godless China benefitting from our innovations, financially?, Why are they building the world’s largest high speed rail network? Why did our patriotic corporate citizens send them our jobs and then  Read More...
Why is China's economy booming when what they mostly sell are repackaged American ideas.
If the corporations took the opposite tack, prices would be higher but so would wages and we would have near full employment.
Instead we export the technology, then the jobs and don't even receive corporate taxation in compensation.

The Titans of industry are looking for the cheapest labor source and yet a premium on price.
It could have all happened in America but instead, China got the boom and we got the trickle down bust..,
They only valued us for the size of our military and the ability to enforce their will and seize others assets while protecting theirs.
They made our once righteous military personnel a mercenary mob for their avarice!
In God we trust?
If you’re a Republican the name of God is Mammon

When they finally become tired of us as citizens they might just sell the surplus of us off to Chinese labor camps.

Ricky, Ricky, Ricky - your problem is that you are confusing personal faith with state sponsored religion. Remember? The Kingdom of God is -within-. There is a VERY simply solution to all this, one in which you absolutely CAN mix church and state, and no one will protest. And better yet, this answer is in your bible - Galations 5 says "22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!" I sincerely doubt that anyone will mind if you practice these things in public, especially while holding public office. And it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see non-Christian officials practicing these things either - the beauty of these attributes is that they are absolute and as such, are above any legislation. We don't want government to be involved in our faith in any way because then it become religious and legalistic - my freedom lies in my personal relationship with my God, not in any officially approved theological position statement.

Is it me or can you see the hate flowing off of this man, I mean all the name calling, and blame. Nothing else though! I think if he is a real presidential candidate he should at least say something that would create some notice ina good way. I guess these days the repub's as a whole are hateful and want to go into the opposite direction. They have a plan, but if it is anything that Bush was doing it is wrong!!!! These blogs have showed me the discord they are creating. I had atheists tell me their god made them that way. Candidates put each others views down, by holding opposition, saying religious freedom is being violated because church's won't provide contraception to those who are free to choose them because of their belief's (wheres the freedom in that?). Catholic church's not pursuing mercy and opposing a gay child at her mothers funeral. Religious leaders taking political and social views over Gods word. SICK!!! At the least of this and some would disagree because of his skin color, or his name, or just because they listen to sick things and have no common sense, Mr Obama is staying on point and helping some. But our country is in discord and I believe it is intentional!!

Santorum is insane. Hillary Clinton abd Barack Obama both support FREEDOM of religion. They support ALL PEOPLES right to worship the God of their choice. Santorum is the one who wants the Pope running America. He is so confused and out of touch with reality. That is why I am finding it hard to believe that main stream American Christians support this clown at all. He has no idea what he is talking about and all he cares about is Birth control, abortion and gay males. He doesn't care about work, the economy or what matters to most Americans. And the Pope is not going to be elected by me. EVER

Yes, when X-Tians take to the Public square, all sorts of good things happen: Salem, Inquisition, and Crusades. Oh, also: X-tian support/denial of holocaust, can't forget that one.

Rick is another religious fa na tic that lacks the abilty to comprehend the constitution. He and those like him would like nothing more than to make this a Country with a monolithic (christian) god mandated by the government. I could not imagine any sensible person wanting to live under those theocracy type conditions. Scary people indeed.

Rick is trying to get every religious person to vote for him that is not the way to get votes.People want jobs. talk about bringing jobs back to the U S. from over seas.

Why doesn't he just come right out and say what he truly believes, that anyone who doesn't agree with him and plans to vote for him is a terrible sinner and will go straight to hell. Just my opinion, based on experiences with other extremely religious zealots.

The fact that this guy is still a viable candidate after his comment that pregnant rape victims should make the best of the situation is both amazing and disturbing.

Did you read where he said that "rape victims should just learn from this lesson and move on with their lives, and be grateful for the wonderful gift (a baby) that God gave them". What lesson did they learn? Not to be raped? He is so confusing.

well, they also learned what Santorum (google santorum) thinks a gift from god entails. I, for one, would be slapping my head if I were a christian.

I've heard some loony-tunes politics in my time, but this guy is beyond that. My compatriot Chiefy1724 labelled him "pure mental," but he's way beyond that. This guy seems to me to be so far off the wall that he makes Johann Lamont look like a slick operator. That won't mean much to most of you American folks, but trust me, anyone who makes Johann look good... oh boy.. that person is off the scale!
Will someone please reassure me that this guy is not going to be taking up residence in the White House any time soon... or indeed, ever. Please?

WLQ, I've already suggested a HuffPo "Darkened Room".....

(That's a wee in-joke there from NewsNetScotland.com, where the fight for Independence is on in earnest !)

Anyway, I have now revised "Pure Mental" to just "Mental". Our transatlantic cousins and indeed anyone from outside WoS may not get the full nuance of the "Pure" bit.

Thankfully, Our Politicians Don't Do God. If anyone this side of the pond came out with the sort of [censored] that Romney, Gingrich and Santorum are coming out with, they'd be Hanging from the Lamp-posts before they got to the end of the speech.

We're not perfect, our system isn't perfect but thank deity/lack thereof that we don't have to put up with that !
