Growing Number Of Americans Can't Afford Food, Study Finds

Afford Food

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/28/2012 5:56 pm Updated: 02/29/2012 11:55 am

Here in the United States, growing numbers of people can't afford that most basic of necessities: food.

More Americans said they struggled to buy food in 2011 than in any year since the financial crisis, according to a recent report from the Food Research and Action Center, a nonprofit research group. About 18.6 percent of people -- almost one out of every five -- told Gallup pollsters that they couldn't always afford to feed everyone in their family in 2011.

One might assume that number got smaller wrapped up with the national unemployment rate falling for several consecutive months. In actuality, the reverse proved true: the number of people who said they couldn't afford food just kept rising and rising.

The findings from FRAC highlight what many people already know: The economic recovery, in theory now more than two years old, has done little to keep millions of Americans out of poverty and deprivation. Incomes for many haven't kept pace with the cost of living, and for a large swath of the country, things today are as bad as ever, or worse.

Forty-six million people lived below the poverty line as of 2010, a record number, according to the Census Bureau, and one that's not even as high as some other estimates would have it. Take a further step back and the situation appears even more dire. About 45 percent of people in the U.S. have reported not being able to cover their basic living expenses, including food, shelter and transportation, according to the group Wider Opportunities for Women.

The official poverty rate is about 15 percent, but over two-fifths of Americans have so little saved that one financial emergency is all it would take to put them in poverty, according to the Corporation for Enterprise Development.

These high rates of financial insecurity -- a consequence of the weak job market, and the prevalence of jobs that don't pay very well -- are making themselves felt at the level of everyday spending.

Recently, for example, a Center for Housing Policy study found that a growing number of middle-income owners and renters are paying more than half their earnings just to keep a roof over their heads. And as of 2009, almost one in five Americans over 50 years old were skipping on doctor visits, switching to cheaper medications or forgoing some medicines entirely out of financial necessity, according to a recently published study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute, a think tank.

As for widespread hunger of the kind recorded by FRAC, research shows that the entire country ends up paying one way or another. While the people who can't afford food are obviously suffering the worst, the social costs incurred -- from the money spent to keep food pantries open to the lifelong diminished earning power of impoverished children -- come to about $167 billion a year, or $542 for every man, woman and child in the country.

Curious about the standard of living in the U.S.? Here are 15 facts about income inequality:

And this combined with the obesity epidemic. Very strange times.

If this is being factious towards the fact that people are starving while they are "fat" and that It can't be possible than you obviously know nothing about basic nutrition!
When you cannot get adequate food and only get to eat something like One (1) meal a day…your body goes into starvation mode and it holds on to all the nasty crap that like “saturated fats” etc. In the meal that most times is a premade pop it in the microwave pre-packaged job…nothing good is in these foods…the body holds on to all that and stores it in the body as fat…this is why if you go on popular diets such as Weight watchers it makes someone lose weight to Eat…wait …did is say lose weight to eat MORE??? YEP…if you eat more such as the 3 meals day or rather 6 small meals a day you boost your metabolism and lose weight. Eating once a day will be sure fire way to make someone gain about 2 lbs every couple days due to your body not knowing when its getting nutrients again…

Wow. I was just commenting on the countless reports of an obesity epidemic with estimates around 30 plus %. I am of the belief these numbers tend to overlap, as to further agendas, such as this hunger report.

Gee, our family of 5 have $60.00 a week left for groceries. I lost my job due to poor health. We still have children at home and it's very rough. Ways that I've saved has been to hang clothes out on the line, turned off the A/C, we got rid of cable, but kept the Internet, we're not in debt with credit cards, but we do have huge college loans to pay off. I feel rich compared to starving people, I just count my blessings. We never eat out, buy fancy clothes, and our hobbies are reading. I don't know what America has come to. We applied for food stamps, but were told that we missed the line by earning 100 dollars too much a month. Sometimes I feel desperate...I thank the Lord for the Dollar Tree, this is where we buy most of our food. Sometimes I just feel like maybe we're just spoiled people....and don't really know what suffering is. I count my blessings, it just grows weary sometimes eating the same food everyday, but I thank God for it and my heart is grateful because I know it could be worse. As a mom, it would be so nice to once and a while buy my girls something new and pretty to where, this is where it's so hard. All my family members are suffering too

This growing divide between rich and poor is a natural consequence of free market capitalism. Without iron clad legislation to restrict corporate growth (which will never happen as everyone has a price- including judges) economic disparity will only get worse. You think it's bad now? Just wait. Unemployment, poverty, homelessness is only going to rise. There is no recovery this time. My question is how long are we going to suffer before we transform this archaic, outdated "uncivilization?"

Americans going without food while Obama agrees to send 250,000 metric tons of food to North Korea's army. There's something wrong here.

Newt did say that overseas handouts from America would stop under a Newt administration. He would cancel all foreign aid, then review each situation case by case. I'm for that.

And what have the Republicans done, other than use the smoke and mirrors of gay rights and birth control to distract the citizenry from the fact that they've done no better.

Having read through many of the posts here, I notice that no one said anything about the FACT that cars showing up at food banks, food stamp offices and the like are usually a late model to SUV type vehicle driven by people wearing gold jewelery, wearing ostrich quill boots, talking on their Blackberry while checking mail on their "tablet." If they can afford these "basics?" why are they hurting for food.. Possibly the priority of their spending??

I can assume you have never sat outside a food pantry, food bank or food stamp office. I Have! I have also worked as volunteer at night shelters and the like and you would not believe the abuse of the systems set up to help/protect the "actual" needy.

the 'recovery' works like this: you have your unemployment expire and if you are lucky you get yourself a part time job at roughly half the money you were getting to survive on unemployment. The government then counts you as 'employed' and the u/i goes down. if youre not that 'lucky', you are left with no income at all and the government no longer counts you as unemployed- either way the government reduces the u/i, and we are in 'recovery'...how sweet!

You Americans are too funny! Believing that the poor will rise up, be able to eat and afford housing. You have the worst healthcare in the western world, the poorest wages and are bankrupt. And you have an ever-ending religious debate to see who is the most conservative. Get over it, feed your people, have national health and look after your society otherwise you will collapse. You aren't the Romans - so about 200 years is it. for domination. China means 'middle' - get used to it. Wally World (aka Walmart) has.
Have a nice day!

Thanks for the lecture, but many of us are aware of the scenario and are trying to change it. We can do without the sanctimony.
06:21 PM on 03/03/2012
I disagree. We need to hear it, over and over until we actually stop trying and start DOING. Clearly, not enough of us are aware of the situation.

Good points all. Americans, if they can, and if they are smart, should relocate to a foreign country - and take their retirement savings with them. The Red states are burning down America.

Time for a revolution.....EAT THE RICH!!!
02:54 PM on 03/02/2012
That's what they did in Cuba, China and Russia.

For those who think it worked in China, China's more recent success came by pampering the rich and not being permitted to have more than one child. On the second point, it becomes questionable whether China is a success.

There are some countries in the world where the belief is if you eat your enemies, it grows you stronger. Perhaps maybe some truth to that in some fashion.

People need to learn to grow their own food indoors and out. Turn yards into vegetable gardens and do hydroponics and/or terrariums inside. Use the square-foot gardening technique to get a lot out of a little space.

This licentious Federal Reserve has knowingly built within our economy a dollar worth half of what it was in 2000.  In fact, when the speculators get finished with it the dollar will buy maybe 25 % of what is purchased in 2000.
i go to the store every week. I have see the terrible rise in basic food costs that are destroying all the small bakeries and other  food establishments and leaving in their place a couple massive monopolies to manufacture our lower quality food at a higher price.  Monopoly and the Fed have coalesced to turn our nation into a two class oligarchy.
03:59 AM on 03/02/2012
I track food pretty carefully and I would estimate that the cost of food has been rising at about 2 or 3 percent a year over the past 3 to 5 years. There are too many variables to always see the changes, and there's been a shift in food retailing and distribution. But overall, eating healthy is pretty inexpensive for anyone who understands how to value what they get for their money.

Most small bakeries tend to cater to the "chick" generation, but fresh locally baked bread is still pretty reasonable. A box of over-advertised ready-to-eat cold cereal and a package of of "stick in the oven" frozen fish sticks will blow a food budget twice as fast as a loaf of fresh baked bread.

Most of the local bakeries around here are closed or close to gong under.  The price of commodities, including the source of food is being bid up by fiat monies around the world.  Our FED is creating a bubble economy in commodities as it did in housing.  We will rue the day of such negligence and loose money that only the wealthy can get control to buy up American assets of the ordinary people who are going bankrupt from lack of work and income.  The monied people are the winners.  The other 90% are the losers.
11:40 AM on 03/02/2012
You're missing the point. Ask yourself who really controls this country and you'll know why so much is so f***ed up....It's the rich....chaos and greed are their calling cards. And THEY are the real enemy!
02:58 PM on 03/02/2012
Right now it's the Socialist Democrats who are controlling this country and from here it looks like they are doing even worst than the (so called) rich Republicans.

Neither of them have done a very good job, but while Republicans get a D+ Democrats get a F.

Yes.  Specifically, it is the big banks too big to fail who control the nation's money supply via the FED who have joined hands with predator capitalism to create huge suffocating monopolies that control everything they survey, including our government officers.

the way most americans eat is causing epidemics of debilitating and life threatening diseases.

americans are overdosing on calories while starving for micronutrients.

eating satisying amounts of nutritious, healthful food is neither expensive nor high calorie.

You're correct, for the most part, although in many neighborhoods, obtaining fresh, nutritious food is next to impossible.
04:49 AM on 03/02/2012
Yea. Why they build housing projects in the middle of food desserts is beyond me. If, on the other hand, housing projects are the cause of the food desserts it's still the same government idiots who didn't things through.

Governent idiots usually live in the suburbs, they have a car, and they only work 9 to 5, unless it snows. And they get their marching orders from the idiots in congress.
04:27 AM on 03/02/2012
Amen.

Our problems have less to do with the cost of food than with our "on demand" effortless eating habits :)

When people are challenged by the cost of food it's from their viewpoint of years of eating a diet of overpriced convenience or fast food.

I just today purchased a gallon of milk for $1.99 and a dozen eggs for $1.19. I noticed grapes available at 99 cents a pound, avocados at 29 cents each, lettuce at $1.19 a head, fresh asparagus at 99 cents a pound, and sugar pears at $2.99 for a small case of about 24 count. All of these prices would fit a budged that's considerably lower than a food stamp budget.
06:20 PM on 03/02/2012
Where do you live, cause ALL of that stuff is more expensive where I am. Seriously, I can go in a 100 mile radius of where I live and not find prices that cheap. Unfortunately a lot of us don't live where fresh nutritious food is cheap and accessible (I live near a port city and my state IS heavy in agriculture as well).
