Costa Allegra Fire: Ship Being Towed To Land, Will Arrive Thursday

JASON STRAZIUSO and VICTOR L. SIMPSON   02/28/12 02:03 PM ET  AP

NAIROBI, Kenya — Helicopters ferried food, phones and flashlights Tuesday to more than 1,000 passengers and crew stuck aboard a disabled cruise ship that was being towed to the Seychelles Islands through waters prowled by pirates.

Those aboard the Costa Allegra, a sister ship of the cruise liner that capsized off Italy last month, faced more stifling days and nights before the vessel docks in the tropical paradise.

The stricken liner was expected to reach the main Seychelles island of Mahe on Thursday, the Italian cruise operator said.

"The speed of the ship, despite the hot and humid climate, creates a slight breeze that helps make the situation more comfortable," a company statement said.

It said fresh bread would be brought in Wednesday since cooking was impossible, but added there was "no lack of food and other comfort items."

Fire erupted Monday in the ship's generator room, knocking out power to its engines, lights and air conditioning. The blaze came just six weeks after the Costa Concordia hit a reef and capsized off Italy, killing 32 people. Both ships are operated by Costa Crociere SpA, which is owned by Florida-based Carnival Corp.

Cruise officials initially said the stranded travelers would be taken by Wednesday to Desroches, a small, exclusive coral-lined island in the Seychelles. But they changed the destination to the larger island of Mahe, citing safety and logistical reasons.

Two tug boats joined a French fishing vessel to tow the Costa Allegra, which was being escorted by the Seychelles coast guard ship Andromache and an air force plane. The liner was carrying 413 crew members and 636 passengers, including 212 Italians, 31 Britons and eight Americans. Four passengers were children ages 3 or younger.

No one was injured in Monday's fire, but the blaze set the cruise liner adrift at sea in a region where Somali pirates prey on ships.

Company officials rushed to play down concerns.

The Costa Allegra is "being pushed by the current. It is stable and upright," Giorgio Moretti, the director of nautical operations for Costa Crociere SpA, told reporters in a conference call late Monday from company headquarters in Genoa, Italy.

"It's a big ship and to tow it, to move it across the waters, is a heavy task," said Seychelles presidential spokeswoman Srdjana Janosevic. She said that all was calm on board the vessel and no one was hurt.

Italian Coast Guard officials said emergency generators were keeping the ship's control room illuminated and communications equipment, such as radios, running. The fire disabled its non-emergency phones, so telephones were among the supplies brought in by helicopter Tuesday.

The Allegra, whose Italian name means "merry," or "happy," had left northern Madagascar, off Africa's southeast coast, on Saturday and was cruising toward Port Victoria when the fire erupted. Costa said the Allegra had been due in Port Victoria on Tuesday.

The region where the cruise ship was adrift off the coast of Tanzania has seen a rash of attacks by Somali pirates. In 2009, an Italian cruise ship with 1,500 people aboard fended off a pirate attack in the Indian Ocean far off the coast of Somalia.

Moretti said an armed nine-member Italian military team on anti-pirate duty was aboard the Allegra, but he insisted the maritime region where the ship was "isn't a high risk area for pirates."

"If pirates attack, the armed guards on board will respond. But as far as I am aware, no pirates have been sighted in the area," Janosevic said.

Moretti said 15 Costa engineers, technicians and other officials were flying to Mahe in hope of reaching the Allegra by air to repair its generators.

Ahemmm.......

Poor choice of words: "Ship Being Towed To Land"

The last Concordia ship had a problem with "Land"!

Maybe "Ship Being Towed To Port" would have been better....

That is an important comment Tony! Made my day when a power failure happened at a motel in a hurricane. There are small LED lights availible now that provide a lot of light. I never leave home without one.

I own a small 12 room INN in a small town. Not long after I had purchased it we had a power outage along with a tornado warning in "my little town"! I had a motel full of young workers from "the city" and they pretty much panicked because it was late at night, the electricity went out, NO lights, no TV, but a lot of rain, hail and loud noises outside (they assumed it was a tornado because the electricity went out.) I pulled my car to the front of the building and shined my bright headlights down the front of the building so they had "a bit" of light when they opened the door to their rooms to see what was "brewing" outside! We (they) survived the panic of no electricity for a few hours, but the next day I went to a store and brought 12 flashlights for my "little town INN" and kept them handy in case that ever happened again. I had always traveled with a flashlight & I STILL take one to hotels, relatives homes, etc. when I travel!! Just in case!!

Another Carnival cruise line. I booked a cruise for September. With all the Carnival problems, maybe this is an omen. Thinking about cancelling.

How many cruises do you think there are in one month? Lots I'm guessing. The odds of this happening to your cruise is very slim. If you read about a car accident, do you not going driving again? People slip and die in the shower, do you stop showering? The reason why things like this are big in the news when they happen is because of the rarity of them happening.

There has been a lot of Cruse Ship problems these past few years. Make one think if it is worth the hassel to go for a vacation on a boat.

You have to feel sorry for the passengers. They were going on a nice little cruise, a vacation, a time to rest and enjoy themselves. Sure didn't happen for them on this cruise! Stuck on ship, sweating, hungry and no running water means, no showers, no relief from the heat and no toilets. What a fun filled cruise this was! Plus they get stuck with a unprepared for flight home. A person packs different luggage for a cruise than for flying. What if their luggage is over 50 pounds? Are they going to get slapped with the extra fees? I had been wanting to take a cruise, but I am seriously reconsidering it now.

I have been on many cruises and we always flew to the location the cruise was starting from and back home from where it ended. That is the way most people get to and from the ports, so your thing about not packing for flying is a non factor.

The Carnival Corp, who is the parent company of these ships is in deep trouble. Even the Carnival Cruise Line has a poor record for their ships. I'd suggest taking another cruise line if one wants to cruise. I hope these folks get home okay. The whole Somali pirate thing is unrestful at best.

I did a Carnival cruse in 1992 it was great but back then you never heard of all the mishapes going on now.

Carnival owns most cruise lines, almost a monopoly. You'd have to look long and hard to find an independent cruise line.

No matter how you look at it, especially if you're a passenger, this ship is a floating piece of $h!t.
