If you're thinking about packing up and leaving your college campus to spend a semester studying in another country, you're not alone.

The Institute of International Education reports that upwards of 300,000 American students study abroad each year. Most students study abroad for either one semester or over the summer.

It's not something just rich kids do either. Plenty find scholarships and financial aid to get themselves overseas.

But where are the most popular countries that students go to?

GoAbroad.com has come up with the most popular countries in which students do study abroad semester.

Totally spot on! We're seeing lots of students fund their study abroad travels on www.mytab.co to Japan, England, Spain and Ireland also. Amazing time to be doing study abroad this summer in London, with the Olympics!

Why is it mostly European countries? I don't think this is quite fair to the amazing opportunities Asia has to offer.

I was asked if I wanted to study abroad as an undergrad. I replied, "Depends on what she looks like"

I'm currently studying abroad in France and am still paying only half of what some of my friends back home pay for tuition at top league schools---- and they can party just as hard there. There is a bad misconception that all students that go off to study are getting high off of mommy and daddy's bank accounts--- but they're just making judgements on account of the few horror stories that the media spins out. There are serious students out there looking to broaden their horizons.

Best is not the same as most popular. This is a list of the most popular destinations. A list of the best would no doubt include many nations of the Global South.

It's funny that the image portraying Ireland shows an Italian scoring against us in a recent rugby match. One which we won 42-10. Surely a more representative image could have been found?

Russia! Great people, great nightlife, and you can drink beer and not have to run from the cops like you do here (when will Americans realize we're the ONLY country where this happens?) I spent two out of four years there, among the best in my life.

I regret not doing a semester abroad when I had the chance... But funds didn't allow.

It's not necessarily that expensive. If you speak French for instance, tuition at a university in France only costs a couple of hundred euro per year. Airfare can be expensive and your school's study abroad office is gonna try to push their own expensive programs so you'd have to navigate the cheap route yourself. That said, it can be done for a reasonable price.

the trills here are afraid to leave this country, so they don't want anyone else to either. they might learn something.

I studied abroad in Florence and was overwhelmed by the amount of fellow Americans there. Thankfully, I didn't have a Northface Jacket so none of the locals knew I was one of them.

My son is in Buenos Aires Argentina this semester and he's having way too much fun, I'm jealous !! The cost was actually about the same as it would have been at his college !! But I miss him terribly and when news like the recent train crash happens my heart sinks. He comes home the beginning of May which is right around the corner--- isn't it ??
