Wyoming Doomsday Bill: State Legislators Kill Legislation

Wyoming Doomsday Bill

First Posted: 02/28/2012 4:48 pm Updated: 02/28/2012 7:56 pm

Wyoming lawmakers on Tuesday voted down the state's "Doomsday Bill," which among other things, called for the state to explore buying an aircraft carrier, creating its own currency and starting a military draft for its own army.

The Wyoming House of Representatives voted 30-27 against the bill during a session Tuesday; 31 votes are needed to pass the bill. It already was stripped Monday of provisions for the aircraft carrier and draft. State Rep. Dan Zwonitzer (R-Cheyenne) said lawmakers did not debate the bill before the vote.

"There was no discussion on it today," Zwonitzer told The Huffington Post Tuesday afternoon. "It went up and we voted."

The bill originally was pushed as a study of the state's homeland security and its approach to emergencies. The bill included a study of how the state would handle running out of food or a collapse of the nation's economic system. Zwonitzer said that he was in favor of the bill.

"It was $15,000 for a study to see how Wyoming would handle an emergency, if we were prepared for a crisis," he said. "It was an innocuous study to prepare for a crisis."

Zwonitzer said the proposals for the state to look into purchasing an aircraft carrier, buying fighter jets, creating a military, launching a draft and creating a currency were added early in the process in order to defeat the bill. He said state lawmakers were surprised by the national media attention, which they aren't used to, following the insertion of the aircraft carrier proposal.

"It was a poison pill," Zwonitzer said of the creation of the state military. "We're a landlocked state that does not need an aircraft carrier."

Wyoming does have a National Guard with Army and Air Force units.

Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead (R) told The Huffington Post during the National Governors Association conference in Washington this weekend, that he could not comment on the bill, citing the state law that prohibits him from threatening to veto a bill. He said he also tries to not comment publicly on whether he will sign a bill, but Mead noted that he was taken by surprise by the military proposals in the bill.

Mead, the co-chair of the NGA's Homeland Security Committee, said he believed the legislature should address other issues instead of ramping up the state's military.

Mead laughed off the idea of being the only governor to command his own aircraft carrier. "If we got an aircraft carrier, we'll need a bigger lake," he said.

So, when the dollar collapses, we now have one fewer state that is prepared. All the states should have plans to issue their own currency and to draft an army to protect the rights of their citizens against the federal military.

Republicans doing what they do best: wasting taxpayers money on advancing frivolous and un-Constitutional legislation and getting government more involved in our private lives.

Why can't we know which representative added those crazy provisions? Why won't any media outlets identify who is writing laws that are obviously wasting everyone's time and money? I want this information and I think the public deserves to know.

This is from today's Casper Star Tribune:

House Speaker Ed Buchanan, R-Torrington, said he voted “no” on the final vote because he believed the proposal had achieved its goal: bringing attention to the serious issue of the mounting national debt.

“We sent the message, and it was received,” Buchanan said. “We had a little fun with it, tongue-in-cheek. But that’s what got the attention. That’s what that made sure the message was received.”

I admit, I've been having fun with this, and the idea of an aircraft carrier parked in Alcova lake gives me a bad case of the giggles; but no one with any common sense could believe for one moment that the Wyoming legislature was seriously considering acquiring an aircraft carrier. Besides, the proposal was for a Task Force to study what the state should do in the case of the complete economic or political breakdown of the United States, not a proposal to impliment any of this. They got the attention they were looking for; too bad most people don't understand cowboy humor, which is typically loaded with tall tales and exagerration.

And also, the proposal wasn't to IMPLIMENT anything, it was to "launch a study into what the state should do IN THE EVENT of a complete economic or political collapse in the Unites States." Our legislature was not seriously proposing that we put an aircraft carrier in Yellowstone Lake or Flaming Gorge Reservoir. I'll admit, I have had some fun with the whole thing... the idea of an aircraft carrier parked in Alcova lake inspires giggles in me, but when it comes down to it, I live here, I know what kind of people we have here, and I love Wyoming. This is a good place to live, with wonderful people and beautiful countryside. So PLEASE, stop knocking us for what amounts to nothing more than a little cowboy humor.

I'm from Laramie. In 2006, when I opposed the NRA's fascist transformation of Wyoming gun law in to a no-permit Anbar Province, I was threatened in email and then anonymously on the phone by Wyoming state police http://www.LaserRadio.com/usaatty.pdf Then, when (now Governor) Mead discovered I had evidence on the state police's serial terrorist, Kebin Heller http://www.LaserRadio.com/subject.pdf Mead sent two armed thugs to my house to silence me, incite me arrest and ____ me if I resisted arrest: http://www.LaserRadio.com/forrest.wav
BOTTOM LINE: America is resorting to a political consciousness of fear "counter terrorism" and abuse...to mask the underlying corruption of (Wyoming, the most dangerous state in America with industrial accidents "They're lucky they have a job") a national state of mind that is BANKRUPT, CORRUPT and coasting to a NDAA 2012 "Security State" like I described in my novel http://www.EdgeofHeavenbook.com in 2000-2009, after a previous Wyoming governor threatened the university for considering my wireless research program (which had FCC commissioner support and five companies that wanted to come here to test and evaluate technology!)

Hi Janice, my mom's family published the Rocket Miner. if I sound crazy, excuse me (I hit my head on a tree, skiing in 94) Wyoming is largely unconscious. UW had Angela Davis speak around 2000 and "no problem". After 9/11, Bill Ayers speaks and all hell breaks loose, "prompting" Ann Coulter to appear out of nowhere to "balance" the university.
Waiting 90 minutes for her to show up late, a woman from Powell, sitting next to me says, "I hate Laramie. The university teaches values that are not Wyoming."
I'm the governor's unofficial campaign manager for Senator.

I'll vote for a man with a DCI ranch foreman and a paramilitary arsenal!
Yep! Wyoming values. A man who wastes an $80,000 corn crop near Torrington, so his buddies can hunt geese on a "baited" field. The same guy who sent armed police killers to my house to silence my opposition to the NRA

My doomsday book is just the beginning. Now, I'm writing a screenplay about a small Wyoming town. No more details. Too hot

The only Doomsday out there is the clock of Modernity ticking down on the Republican Party. The population is becoming more diverse and accepting. The dust bin of history is waiting on them, someone just needs to show them the door.

They already stripped a provision for the aircraft carrier? Damn, it would have been fun watching them try to float one of those in Wyoming.

These Republican lawmakers sure don't waste any of the taxpayer's money, do they?

Wyoming takes in more in federal dollars than it pays out in federal taxes. When "our bankrupt fed gov runs out of welfare checks" Wyoming will dry up and blow away. Wyoming is one of the "welfare m0ther" states.

Wyoming is a right to work state. With a 14 billion state budget surplus.
Michigan is forced union state. With a 76 billion state debt.

Sorry, but far from the truth. In 2009 and 2010, Wyoming needed federal stimulus funds to prevent deficits.
