Friends In Random Places

Random Friends

"How did you meet?"

When you ask this question of friends who seem to know each other well, you probably expect to hear that they went to school together or used to work for the same company. Maybe their parents put them in touch. But every once in a while, you hear a more surprising story, one of a chance encounter that led to another meeting and then another and ultimately a friendship. The friends featured below are proof that not every bond has a conventional backstory. Sometimes you find your best friends in the most random places –- even the bathroom of a bar.

Do you have a friend you met in a completely unexpected way? Sitting next to each other an airplane? Fighting over a cab? Trying on clothes at your favorite store? Send a photo and a few lines about how you met to women@huffingtonpost.com.

"My friend Cesca and I met at a bar. :-) Well, we had seen each other at other events and hadn't met. One day at the bar, she says to me, 'We need to go out together one time,' and the rest is history. We have been friends since 2004. Now, as mothers, we only get out once in a while; however, we do make a point to actually hang out every few months." -Rachel Churchill

I met a friend, who I still love her, forever. Nope, I’m not lesbian (don’t like women in general). She befriended me in college in a marching band class. I asked her why? She told me it was my beautiful blue eyes, and that gorgeous blonde (naturally blonde, but permed) hair of mine. Since then, she ran into Larry, a destined drunk. I couldn’t support her in her massive breakup with Larry due to college tests. Thus, I was defriended in her life. I still think she’s the best, included me with her friends. A friend , who includes you with another friend or in gatherings, is the greatest compliment. She did that. I’ve no regrets, and miss her terribly after all these 30 years. No one befriended me, like she did.

i'm a sucker for blonde hair and blue eyes. I'll be your friend.

BTW, I'm a guy, not a lesbian either. :-)

I was new to a city leaving my best friend behind. Early in the school year of Jr. High, our class went on a camping trip. Having no one I knew, I picked my seat on the bus because the girl next to me could have been my best friend's twin. I never compared her to my friend, (other than looks), but we became good friends for a long time.

I understand that a lot of right wingconservative men meet their "best friends" in bathrooms too. Airport bathroomds, mall bathrooms, public park bathrooms, bus terminal bathrooms. They can make friends just about anywhere!

My best friend and I met by making faces at each other through a fish tank when we were three, then ending up in the same kindergarten class the next year.

I am surprised that MOST women have not met their 'best friends' in the bathroom since they never seem to be able to go in there by themselves.

I met my best friend when she answered my personal ad 25 years ago. Since then we've supported each other through thick and thin and always enjoyed each other's company. She's been living with her boyfriend for 16 years and I'm friends with him too.

This sounds a bit on the weird side. YOUR personal ad? Living with HER boyfriend? You are friends with BOTH of them? This calls for an investigation.

Maybe and maybe not. Our local papers include ads for women who want traveling companions, casino buddies and the like. In bigger cities, it could mean anything. As for 25 years ago, who knows? Maybe it was an ad for a dog sitter and maybe not but who really cares? It is that person's story.

For Pete's sake (and everyone else's) do some people REALLY have to turn best friend stories into a conservative vs. liberal rant? Was actually enjoying many of the stories without the usual political overtones and then, there it is. I am a quite political person but sometimes a story is just a story. Seriously, this craziness is just that...

well actually - some friendships have been made arguin the two sides as well - I've known friends who were conservative and met their liberal best friends arguin the facts , but also a lot of times , i've seen the opposite as well -- but i get your point , its a volatile environment this year , people need to vent , and they are venting inways most of us deem unnecessary - politics is a real issue this year - so its everywhere

There is absolutely nothing that can't be turned into a partisan debate. It's ridiculous.

Adding to comment................we were 70 years old when she died a few months ago. From the age of 16 to 70 is definitely a long time to remain friends!

yup - sometimes our friends are there while our more intimeate relationships come and go and sometimes those friendships are the reason why our intimate personnal relationships come and go - findin a significant other who accepts your friends is the best relationship you can have as long as they're willin to share you with your friends , and the same goes both ways

So true! No negotiation for spouse or me about BFF's...they were part of the package. Unfortunately, not so lucky with other friend who married an emotional abuser. But that is just a deal-breaker (both for partner and friend because they're too invested in seeing the person away from the other one). My BFF is the most trusted friend through everything (and there has been much sadness for both as well as joy) as I am for her. We consider ourselves blessed to have found one another.
