'Savage U' Trailer: MTV's New Series With Dan Savage Gets Release Date (VIDEO)

Dan Savage

MTV is premiering its new docu-series "Savage U" on Tuesday, April 3 at 11 p.m. EST.

The series will follow columnist, author, and co-creator of the “It Gets Better Project” Dan Savage as he travels to college campuses across the country, talking to students and offering them a crash course on relationships, responsibility, sex and love.

As seen in the above trailer, Savage isn't afraid to tackle the “taboo” topics that students are too afraid to talk about. From learning how to avoid the “friend zone” or build a committed relationship, to safely navigating online dating and one night stands, to kinks and fetishes, no topic is off-limits and every question is driven by the students themselves.

Each half-hour episode, set at a different college, will feature an open Q&A session in which Savage and his producer Lauren Hutchinson address anonymous questions, as well as one-on-one sessions with Savage for students who are facing deeper issues.

“’Savage U’ gives viewers something seldom seen on television before: an honest conversation about sex," Savage said in a statement. "Sex is usually portrayed as either completely harmless, so everyone should do it, or unspeakably dangerous, so no one should. This is a real discussion about sex -- the good, the bad, and the ugly -- with all the risks, the rewards, the fun and the heartbreak that comes along with it. By talking candidly, we’re letting our audience make their own informed choices and feel empowered to seek out what’s right for them.”

"Savage U" premieres Tuesday, April 3 at 11 p.m. EST on MTV.

To a former Sarah Lawrence student, a campus that dedicates a week to sex ed talks, demos, etc. that culminates in a ball, this seems pretty low-key!

A show about sex on college campuses? That's like shooting fish in a barrel.

I actually liked MTV when it was invented. Today it is like AOL and Huffpost. Filled with tabloid trash and fake celebrities. Disgusting, and I almost never watch it.

If you have been a 'Savage Podcast' listener you would know that this series is worth the effort. If you have watched any of Savage's YouTube college speaking videos you get a feeling how he connects with students. He is at his best in communicating with people face to face. Don't prejudge, check it out.

Not an MTV fan at all, but I loved the "It Gets Better" special, and I think this is a very good topic to tackle, and Savage is a great person to tackle it. He's smart, witty, and fearless.

Sex should not be feared, nor should it be taken lightly. What a great message!

How about a show on education in college ? mtv get off the air.......................

Why would you think this program would not be of value, educationally? People have so many issues when it comes to relationships and sex and so so many people are unhappy. Listen to some of Dan's podcasts and you'll hear people find help and often learn information to help them move forward with their issues...

I really think MTV should just change their name to STV cause they don't even have any music anymore it's all reality shows and everything about sex. Even their kid channel (Nickeldeon is owned by MTV) is going towards more sex stuff but in a lighter over your head approach.
10:21 PM on 02/29/2012
They've always been like that...at least the very few cartoons I've watched as a kid - Rocko's Modern Life was full of it...and on purpose too! Lol!

But I agree, unless you have anything other than cable and MTV Playlist and all that...it's not about the music anymore, which is annoying

I love Rocko lol its more the live action shows like ICarly and Victorious where they have everyone thinkin the girls are hot and they always make out and then there's the floating bra lol

For music I usually watch VH1 now since they play a varity and actually have music shows

Except this show would actually probably help MTV move away from senseless drama shows about sex, and would actually seem more like you watching Sex Ed/ Health class (whichever you have) You should listen to Dan's pod casts... he's more professional about it, really just wanting to dispel stereotypes and misinformation about sex to prevent unwanted consequences from it.

Yep--you can count on anything MTV is up to containing sex in some sort of gross way.

Or, in this case, an honest way.
08:49 AM on 03/01/2012
No, not honest, just the dregs of society talking about their sex lives and sharing it like exhibitionistic perverts. MTV has sucked for the last ten years, all they discuss is sex, sex, sex. Nothing about music anymore.

This is stuff young people really should hear, in some sort of honest discussion. Everyone else refuses to answer the questions, why shouldn't he get a public forum? He is probably the fairest, most balanced and pragmatic advice columnist on the topic. He references experts in medicine and psychology/psychiatry and uses an approach that emphasizes fairness and respect for oneself and one's partner and a trust-what-you-feel attitude. He also gives great advice to those who feel pressured, bullied or are in unfair or abusive situations. He had a great impact on me in my young adult life and the opportunity to hear him should be available to all students!

i'm sure mtv would be 'exploring sex" in middle schools if it were legal... not like they have any class...or souls.

These are legal adults and these issues are most confusing and difficult at this time in their lives. Someone should help them.
