Carolyn Maloney: Rush Limbaugh 'Slut' Comment Is Attempt To Silence Women

Posted: 03/01/12 11:34 AM ET  |  Updated: 03/01/12 01:17 PM ET

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) angrily walked out of a congressional hearing on the contraception coverage rule last month because the one female witness the Democrats brought, Sandra Fluke, was rejected by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) for being "unqualified" to speak on the topic.

But after hearing that conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh called Fluke, a Georgetown University law student, a "slut" and a "prostitute" on Wednesday night for advocating that employers cover birth control pills in their health plans, Maloney is really fuming.

"I am just aghast," she told The Huffington Post on Thursday. "If the far right can attack people like Sandra Fluke, women are going to be afraid to speak because they're going to be called terrible words. It's an attempt to silence people that are speaking out for women."

Maloney and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) had brought Fluke into the hallway outside the House Oversight Committee hearing on Feb. 16 to allow her to give her testimony to reporters while the all-male panel of religious experts testified on record. Fluke told the story of one of her classmates who lost an ovary because Georgetown, a Jesuit university, did not cover the oral contraceptives that she was prescribed for her condition.

Limbaugh said on his show that Fluke's parents should be ashamed of her for testifying that she is "having so much sex she can't afford her own birth control pills."

He added:

"What does it say about the college co-ed Susan Fluke [sic] who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex -- what does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex."

A handful of female Democratic lawmakers fired back on Wednesday and demanded that their Republican colleagues publicly denounce Limbaugh's comments. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said the remarks "unmask the strong disrespect for women held by some in this country," and Maloney told HuffPost that if Republicans "stand silently by and let this pass, they will be condoning it and attacking women."

Limbaugh's comments coincided with a heated Senate debate on Sen. Roy Blunt's (R-Mo.) controversial amendment, which would override President Barack Obama's contraception rule and let any employer refuse to cover birth control or any other health service for moral or religious reasons. While Obama's policy would allow churches and faith-based organizations to opt out of covering contraception, the Blunt amendment would allow anyone, including non-religious employers, to do so.

Maloney said that the GOP attacks on contraception access should serve as a "wake-up call" to the women's rights movement.

"I believe these efforts are sinking in," she said. "Women have to stand up and say stop. We have to get out and get out strong to let women know around the country that they can speak out against this abuse. The right to space and time our children for our own health and the ability to manage our lives -- this is a basic right, and they're going after it."

Are we all victims of Republican induced dissociative amnesia, unable to remember the real truth behind how our economy was trashed and ruined? From 2000 to 2008, with Bush 43 at the helm and Republicans controlling Congress, Republicans systematically plundered America, robbing the US Treasury and Social Security Trust Fund to pay for revenue draining tax cuts for the rich, unfunded wars, corporate  Read More...

I just want to clarify, since I've seen this posted a lot in these threads. People have constantly claimed that birth control used for medical conditions is covered by insurance. I have been taking birth control for years to treat excruciating menstrual pains that have landed me in the E.R. twice. I have all this time been given a prescription by my gynecologist dictating this. My insurance has never paid for it, and I have top notch private insurance.

As for Ms. Fluke, quite frankly I have read her testimony, and whether she is 30 or 23, I have heard similar unfortunate stories from closer more trusted sources. In the case of usage for medical conditions, birth control seems roughly the same as Viagra would be if it was used to control a non-sexual medical condition. The infertility is as much of a side effect as the enhanced excitement in such cases.

As to the comments against Sarah Palin, I may not agree with her political views, but I am just as ready to boycott Bill Maher's sponsors for that insult. Public scrutiny is one thing, but I do not believe that verbal assault is something that should be tolerated in either case. Palin and Fluke are both human beings, deserving of the basic respect all people should hold for each other.

That in mind, as a deeply religious person who would never employ abortion or anything like that myself (and that is strictly personal), I feel the

How in the world is Howard stern still on the radio since he has called lots of girls much worse.
Dont worry because I am going to tell you why..
Howard stern is not a political activist plain and simple. Folks on the left have been trying to get Rush off the air for years and now they have something to grab onto.If you are too poor to buy condoms then have your partner buy them.Besides if you are too poor to buy condoms you have no business having sex in the first place. Having a child is one of the biggest finicial risks anyone will ever take. I dont want to pay for your sex devices with my insurance premium.

Well, I don't want to pay for your Lipitor and insulin. So if you cant afford to buy it yourself, don't eat cheeseburgers and candybars, tubby.
Rush's argument you are repeating here is not illogical. You don't pay anyone's insurance premiums but you own. And Contraception is much cheaper than pregnancy. Do the math, you don't have a leg to stand on.
And I also don't want to pay for any prosthesis for your missing leg either, it's against my religion. So, if you cant buy a peg-leg yourself, get dragging. Your crippy lard-but is making my premiums go up again.

Lets keep the pressure on sponsors of Limbaugh's daily rants. If they support him then they can expect to loose a lot of business from women and some men. They want family planning too. Does anyone know other companies who sponsor this vile person other than the ones who have already quit him? If so, let me know in a reply so I can add my name to the ones who want Limbaugh off the airways.
05:55 PM on 03/06/2012
Does anyone know who sponsors Howard Stern, Bill Maher and Jimmy Fallon? What about all the rap artists who refer to us as b*tches and ho's? That garbage fills the airwaves daily.
11:42 AM on 03/07/2012
Dear holllyscom: I don't know who sponsor's Howard Stern and the others. You are right they do say almost as many awful remarks about women and Limabaugh does. I am not sure how to find out who sponsor's these people. I can tell you that "Lifelock" is still sponsoring Limbaugh. They say his apology is enough for them to keep sponsoring him. I sent Lifelock a E-mail about this and told I would not buy their product under any circumstances as long as they sponsor this vile person. Send more E-mails ladies to Lifelock, maybe if they know how almost all women feel about Limbaugh they may change their minds on sponsoring him.
11:45 AM on 03/07/2012
29 and counting. That's the number of sponsors who have pulled their support for this hater of woment. Let's keep up the pressure on these sponsor's to stay away from this misogynist person.
02:02 AM on 03/04/2012
I'm working while she is getting lucky and she wants me to pay for her birth control. Get a job and you won't have so much time for sex and birth control won't cost you as much.
02:13 AM on 03/04/2012
Thank you for posting, Bob. The more comments like yours, the more a great number of women will see what they are up against and respond accordingly. I hope you're pleased to know how motivational your words are.
02:32 AM on 03/04/2012
She can have all the sex she wants I just don't want to pay for it. Let her pay for it herself.

I will gladly pay for sterilazation of abortion recepiants before Ill pay for someone elses condoms.

I don't have a problem with insurance companies paying for contraceptives. But I'm sick of all those people who want to have the hardworking tax payers to pay for treatments for internal hemorrhoids otherwise known as PILES. Because piles are gross and I don't like to think of all my hard earned $$ going "up the chute" so to speak. I'm still a little hazy about how insurance coverage equates to my tax dollars though.
01:30 AM on 03/04/2012
What a backhanded, half-hearted, pseudo-apology. Does anybody remotely think that he means it? He apologizes with one hand and then takes most of it back with the other. It can only be danage control for him and gives little thought to the damage he did to others. What a fraud!

Because you have dirty thoughts.
12:58 AM on 03/04/2012
okay,so insurance companies should not pay for birth control? So when they decide to not pay for any reproductive care are you going to be okay with that also? What about fertility, pap smears, what about sexual diseases or sexual dysfunction? What if the insurance companies decide although you have paid your premiums that it isn't their fault you have decided to have another child ?This is an absolute win win for insurance that will continue way beyond birth control "if" they are allowed this. Not only indigient, unemployed but also working class women will be affected by this. So if you do not believe in birth control ,don't use it. Would you rather pay for birth control or pay the cost of it not being available to the ones that really need it? Under this belief system only you are undermining choices that clearly the real winners are insurance companies.$$$$$. Insurance premiums are at a all time high, almost more than middle class can afford, they are making money. They have the right to deny you based on many different factors, why give them more?

I was going to write a big long reply but unfortunately, based on how crazy and uninformed your post is, I erased my reply. Instead, I will encourage you to do some research before posting your opinion again. A lot of research.

thank you for your advice. You most likely did the right thing .This is still my opinion.

Rush is right! He has called a spade, a spade. This so called lady does NOT speak for the women of this country. And Obama and the Democrat women support this person? How political! How ashamed she should be to expect taxpayers to pay for her contraceptives! Just another liberal ploy to extract more money from the hard-working taxpayers. She can afford to attend Georgetown? Are the taxpayers paying for her education also? What spoiled brats this country is raising!

You're drinking the kool-aid. Please look up what she actually said. It's a dangerous thing to believe only what is said by Faux News and their mouth pieces. Maybe the good that will come out of this will include that people will begin to learn that Rush and Bill don't necessarily tell the truth.
11:53 AM on 03/04/2012
Sorry, my comments still stand. I don't drink kool-aid and I can easily insert NBC, ABC in your comment instead of "Faux" News. I do believe the mainstream media has an agenda and even tho it has taken me many years to realize this, I have made a very intelligent decision without drinking kool-aid. As this forum stands, we are ALL allowed to give our opinion, but if the shoe fits...wear it.
01:32 AM on 03/04/2012
You are totally stupid and my guess you are male and can't get pregnant. You have no place for this and now Rush has apologized so your turn.
12:01 PM on 03/04/2012
I am afraid YOU are the one who is "stupid"...if you want to continue this silly juvenile name-calling. For your information, Kathy Hartmann, I am NOT male and do have children..even married, if that is pertinent to this discussion. For many years, I had believed the mainstream media's rhetoric about conservative leaders and the media's demeaning bias re these leader's "stupidity". If you don't listen to both sides, how will you ever make an intelligent decision for your own beliefs?. I am willing to bet you have never listened to conservative talk show hosts. This forum is a way to express your own beliefs so next time you express yours, try doing it in a more "intelligent" manner.
07:31 PM on 03/05/2012
Funny without a man she cant get pregnant either so I have just as much right in this conversation as you.
12:56 AM on 03/04/2012
Nobody cares about sex and contraceptives. There are plenty of sources for contraceptives. Try planned parenthood for example.

But don't make a church organization violate it's first amendment rights by paying for an activitty it does not believ in.

What's next liberals? Are you going to make jewish children eat pork?
07:33 PM on 03/05/2012
Dont you know pork is the new white meat and even healthier than beef and the serve many pork products in schools and dont bat an eye. So yes you are right next we will be making jewish children eat pork.
08:49 PM on 03/05/2012
Big-Cappo:

The whole discussion is unbelievable. Republicans want to stop killing unborn babies and the next thing being discussed is "why are Republicans against birth control." Leave it to the liberals, with a special thank you to ABC's George Stephenoupolous.
12:17 AM on 03/04/2012
I am a woman and NO WAY do I regard Rush's comments as disparaging of women. If anything, Fluke disparaged herself with her shameless request that We the Taxpayers, be responsible for her ability to have "safe" sex. Fluke also brought down women by purporting to stand for us. Shame on the Democrats for putting her up there as some representative. They need to put me up. I'll tell them a thing or two. Rush called it right and I agree with him completely.
12:53 AM on 03/04/2012
Well, Moms...If one day a man thinks he has the right to call your daughter, or niece, or granddaughter a slut and a prostitute because she has the audacity to disagree with him, will you stand up for him too?

Let me see: 1. You're misrepresenting what she actually said. 2. She is at least female as opposed to the all male panel the Repubs put up to speak for women. 3. Contraception does not equal safe sex. I could go on but I'm getting a headache.

Rush Limbaugh is just a soldier in the Republican's War on Women.
06:17 PM on 03/04/2012
You are right about that. Let's see if we can start something with Sirius radio to put pressure on them to fire Limbaugh. We all know that he is just a mouth peice for the Republicans. If we can get all the sponsors to leave this vile person then maybe they won't have a choice but to fire him.

Yes. Republicans hate women. Absolutely brilliant.
