Che Guevara Statue In Ireland Causes Outrage In Florida

Che Guevara

Two of Florida’s U.S. representatives are at war with Ireland –- at least with the city of Galway -- over its council’s plans to erect a statue honoring revolutionary Che Guevara.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who was born in Cuba and chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, fired off a statement Wednesday saying, “Instead of honoring a killer, the City Council of Galway should honor the victims of Che and the Castro dictatorship by rejecting this proposal.”

Too late, one of the coastal city’s council members said, according to the Irish news website The Journal.ie:

Responding to Ros-Lehtinen’s comments this evening, Galway City Councillor Billy Cameron said that Ros-Lehtinen and everybody else who has spoken out on this issue “is within their rights” to voice their objections, but that the project was given the full and unanimous support of the council. “I honestly think this has been blown out of all proportion,” he said of criticism of the project which commemorates Guevara’s Irish ancestry. “The Galway connection was established some years ago. He’s related to two of the Galway tribes, the Lynches and the Blakes. We want to celebrate somebody from our historic past.”

The council of Galway, a placid community on Ireland's west coast with fewer than 100,000 residents, voted on the statue about 10 days ago.

In a statement, sent Wednesday afternoon to The Huffington Post, Ros-Lehtinen called the proposal “an outrage.” “Despite the image makeover which some try to give him,” the statement said, “the real Che Guevara was a mass murderer and human rights abuser. To honor him with a monument would be an outrage, and would be a futile attempt to hide the brutal acts which he committed.

“The romanticizing image that this monument would portray would serve to diminish the brutality that was committed by Che and the painful suffering endured by many Cuban-American families and his other victims far and wide. Che Guevara was a ruthless killer who should not be idealized.”

Che Guevara -- the Argentinean revolutionary who played a major role in the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s -- is an incendiary figure in South Florida’s Cuban exile community, reviled for his role in helping Fidel Castro take power on the island.

Ros-Lehtinen’s fellow South Floridian, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, similarly blasted the council’s proposal Wednesday afternoon in a press release sent to the Huffington Post.

“Galway is a city where people have the right to vote, the right to worship freely, the right to speak freely, and access a free press– all of which “Che” Guevara and his murderous associate, dictator Fidel Castro, ruthlessly suppressed,” the statement said. “Having a memorial to this cruel assassin is a shameful affront to the thousands of Cubans he murdered and utterly ignores the truth of who “Che” Guevara actually was.”

The Galway council’s plan already earned it a lambasting in the Belfast Telegraph this week, where writer Kevin Myers described it as “Excellent: a monument to a ruthless killer is just what Ireland’s tourism industry needs.”

Guevara, he continued, a “vagrant sociopath, murderer, fantasist and narcissist, remains in a class of his own … In victory in Cuba, he was a cold-blooded murderer, but then could not settle to life in an adult society."

“He sought and he finally found grubby death, alone and friendless on a Bolivian mountainside. Yet a single earlier photograph of him transformed his murderous insanity into a truly perverse secular sainthood.”

In his statement, entitled, “Shameful memorial to a ruthless mass murderer,” Diaz-Balart was no less vitriolic:

“A memorial to this despicable individual is a shameful slap in the face to the victims, whose lives he so ruthlessly extinguished, their families, and the millions of Cubans who still suffer under the effects of his deplorable acts. I am confident that if the people of Galway know the well-documented horrors inflicted by “Che” Guevara, they will be disgusted by the prospect of erecting a monument to that monster.”

Frankly I object to the whole state of Florida. It's about time we gave it back to Spain or it's original owners: the Native Americans(Seminoles, Creek, etc.) ;-)

Speaking on behalf of the Irish State, I would like to propose a deal....you give us €15 Billion Euros and we'll take down the bloody statue....otherwise you concentrate on Florida and leave Galway to Galway.

The new Ché monument will be in Howth up on top of the Tower at the east pier. Forget Galway. Here's the link via the local signposts. They are up already and fester like a sore for those of us who are the righteous.

Personally I am outraged. This man will replace the great Martello of Howth in the hearts and minds of the younger generation. Yours in horror. Séamus Mac Giolla Phadraig. Sutton, Howth.

Ros-Lehtinen and Lincoln Diaz-Balart make Che Guevara look like a choir boy! They are the corrupt ones responsible for so much harm to the Palestinians and to the people in Cuba. These insidious Cubans have no shame. At long last, they have no decency!

Ros-Lehtinen has worked her Cuban heart out for Israel. It is profoundly embarrassing to watch her subservient shilling for Israel as 'support for Israel' is a stated reason for the assault on 9-11. As a member of Congress, she is responsible for helping Israel murder many Palestinians and she has diverted money allocated for the Palestinians to go to Israel. Cubans have no shame! At long last, Cubans have no decency!

Lincoln Diaz-Balart stated on NPR some time ago that there would be a yearly $500 billion dollar business for Cuba if “we” were to let U.S. tourists go there. The American people should not tolerate insidious ingrates from Cuba telling us where we can and cannot go. Senator Rubio misrepresented the fact about when and why his people immigrated to America. He has been very disingenuous in conjunction with many of his comments. The questions is not why did they come to America, but why did we allow them to come to America. They have trashed our country, our Hallowed Halls of Congress, they have trashed our values and our credibility. It would be a far, far better thing for America ifCubans had become lunch for sharks!

Oh, cry me a river. Galway can and should do whatever it likes. Che Guevara was not a murderer. He was a doctor and revolutionary who helped free Cuba from the Batista regime which raped and tortured its citizens. I'm tired of these people in Florida thinking they can dictate what the rest of the world does. Cuba is creating its own future and you left Cuba behind. All of your attempts to terrorize Cubans have failed (including sponsoring terrorism to bring down an Cuban airliner carrying an entire soccer team of young Cubans). Why don't you focus on the problems in your own country and stop with your propaganda. Che is a hero in most of the world.

I wondered who the many murder victims of that monster really were, that it might make for a heart of the matter comment here, so I pasted "Che Guevara" into the Google window on Firefox browzer, and was thinking of adding "victims" when a drop-down menu of prompts included "che guevara murderer," so I clicked on that, and the first result was ...

See a list of the documented victims of che Guevara in Cuba, from 1957 to 1959 ... Click here to see a video of the firing squad murder of Col. Cornelio Rojas ...

I clicked the link. The page lists as 180 DOCUMENTED VICTIMS OF CHÉ GUEVARA IN CUBA, and contains the following, with link:

Che Guevara did unlawfully take human life, with deliberation and malice aforethought. He did murder, in cold blood. His victims' blood cries out to the Galway City Council, to the voters of Galway, to anyone contemplating doing business in or with Galway or making a trip thereto.

I'm guessing one could comb Braunau am Inn, Austria and not discover a statue of Adolph Hitler. It IS his birthplace, but I doubt they want to "celebrate somebody from our historic past" there.

I live in Galway and wholeheartedly support the construction of this monument for reasons that are my own. As far as I am concerned this is between the Irish, Cubans and Argentinians and maybe America could mind it's own business for once. Also, the park in the centre of Galway is officially called the John F Kennedy Memorial Park and the Vietnamese (or the Cubans for that matter) didn't get all uppity about that... Sorry for the bad grammar but the rage is flowing out of me right now.

Look, I'm no fan of Kennedy, but he was the first American president of Irish descent, so I guess that makes some sense. But it doesn't sound like you'd vote for it. But maybe you're right and the Irish should just stay out of making statues of foreigners.

Of course sane people can recognize the difference between a democratically elected leader trying to spread freedom around the world, even you think ultimately the Vietnam War was a bad idea (I think it was necessary, but sadly failed due to ignorant loss of support - thus look at the difference between Vietnam and South Korea), and... a psychopath who personally murdered and tortured thousands.

Also, the US is staying out of this. The people protesting are Cubans who were given refuge here because their brothers and sisters in Cuba are lacking in simple freedom of expression and press. One wishes that you had been born in Cuba post-Che and that the Cubans had been born in Ireland.
