Rick Santorum and a radio host in Cincinnati were in the middle of a heated conversation about the former senator's views on birth control -- until the line went dead.
"I've been doing this for 12 years and I've never had a senator hang up on me," said Scott Sloan, a radio host with 700 WLW.
Sloan told Santorum that his wife is Catholic and "pretty conservative," but she was nevertheless "mad" at the former senator for his position on contraception. Santorum has said that he does not believe birth control should be covered by health insurance. He has also said that he and his wife do not use "artificial contraception."
"It's a bogus issue. It's just absurd," said Santorum, blaming the media for playing "gotcha politics."
"In all fairness, Rick Santorum, you did say that about birth control. If you're on the trail and it's on video --" said Sloan.
Santorum stopped the host, saying that he was talking about his "personal beliefs," not trying to mandate his views on other people. As he was talking, however, his phone began breaking up and the line went dead:
Did we lose him? What are we doing? Alright, his phone died. I would think if you're running for the presidency, you'd want a better phone or charger or something. You couldn't go on a landline? I love wireless technology, but I mean, really? Well, maybe we'll have Rick Santorum again some other time.
You can't say stuff on the campaign trail, and -- yeah, and blame the media as much as you want, but you're on the campaign trail saying this stuff, and then people trot it out and go, "What's that?" It brings up a very real issue, because we're not dumb.
Sloan said that maybe it would be better to just "STFU" about social matters if a candidate doesn't want them to become a campaign issue.
Santorum's campaign did not immediately return a request for comment.
