Solar Flare Big Enough To Cause Catastrophe On Earth Called Surprisingly Likely

First Posted: 03/ 1/2012 11:46 am Updated: 03/ 1/2012 12:09 pm

An aurora borealis may be beautiful, but can there be too much of a good thing? A new study published in the journal Space Weather analyzed the frequency of the solar storms that cause auroras and found that there's a one in eight chance that by 2020 the Earth will be affected by a major solar flare.

The risk is far greater than previously thought.

"Even if it’s off by a factor of two, that’s a much larger number than I thought,” study author Pete Riley, senior scientist at Predictive Science, a space "weather" research firm in San Diego, told Wired.

Why should a storm on the sun be cause for concern? As it turns out, the high-energy particles liberated by a major flare might cause "disruption of the transportation, communication, banking and finance systems, and government services; the breakdown of the distribution of potable water owing to pump failure, and the loss of perishable foods and medications because of lack of refrigeration,” according to a National Resource Council report from 2008.

Riley calculated the relationship between the severity of a solar storm and how likely it is to happen, basing his predictions on the so-called Carrington event of 1859, which caused widespread disruption of communication systems as well as brilliant auroras as far south as the Caribbean. During the event, Scientific American noted, "People could read the newspaper by their crimson and green light. Gold miners in the Rocky Mountains woke up and ate breakfast at 1 a.m., thinking the sun had risen on a cloudy day."

Some say that a modern-day Carrington might prove to be a "cosmic Katrina." But Wired reports that preparation may be the key to maintaining order in such a situation: "The potential dangers might be significantly less, since power companies are aware of such problems and can take action to mitigate them."

Sun Flares and Solar Storms have a profound impact on the human body and brain, some of it positive and some not so positive. To an extent it recharges and clear out cellular memory, Everyone should be aware of what it actually does to us!

And there we have it:
The latest scapegoat for our politicians' incompetence and corruption.

"disrupt banking systems... affect the distribution of water supplies...", my foot.

Next they'll be telling us the entire population of Greece has mysteriously disappeared - must have been a natural disaster...

Money-grubbin liberals hate the church. God knows all. He sees all. You all are going to burn. This solar flare business is just his way of sending you to the depths of darkness.

GWB spent 2 trillion dollars of our money in Iraq, now no christian church is allowed there.
Kind of ironic, huh, icelandic ayatollah.

If you want to see a real live communist, get your mom to take you to North Korea.

Cells are to us as we are to the universe. And the same way nature on earth works to keep those cells and everything else balanced, so shall be the nature of the cosmos. We are but single points in a linear equation. If the value of our existence changes, the entire equation changes due to the balance. What we do here echoes beyond. At some point, our actions must be counter balanced. The irony is we're always afraid for the preservation of life yet while we have life we do nothing but degrade it with bad habits.

Seems, actually, pretty damn clear to me...

Maybe try to read it again??

Of course, it could all just come down to the fact that it goes clear over your head and you do not possess the deep thinking needed to recognize it, but I think you just missed it personally...

"We" are not in any way as important to the universe as cells are to us. The universe would operate just as well if the earth and all of its inhabitants disappeared overnight--which may well happen at any time.

Scientists have just discovered an asteroid that could impact earth in February of 2013, which for those of you who are counting is only 41 days from 12-21-12.

All joking aside, this asteroid is capable of producing a Tanguska type event if calculations are just a little off. Right now, speculation is that it will pass around 17,000 miles from earth. However, as this was discovered just recently, there has not been enough time to realistically extrapolate an orbit. 17k is just a best guess, right now.

Though we are very sophisticated today as compared to the recent past, we are still capable of being taken by surprise. This asteroid, which is really pretty large, is a prime example of our ignorance of our situation in the cosmos. Why is our government cutting funding for space exploration when there are so many other ways to save money? We are far more likely to encounter an impact from space, than being forced into a nuclear exchange. Shift some defense money toward NASA.

They don't care about the cosmic future. They are only concerned with the fiscal year.
11:51 AM on 03/10/2012
All the space exploration we could possibly do would not prevent such an event as you project.

It would be nice if one of these solar flares could do something useful, like wipe out Fox News.

Nice thought, but I doubt the flares will be that discriminating.
11:30 AM on 03/10/2012
Yes!

If it would also wipe out your computer, smartphone, iPad and iPod touch to eliminate your ability to access anything online, that would be just fantastic also!!!

:-)

Hard to believe that mankind survived all these centuries with no computer, smart phone, iPad, iPod--for many centuries not even a party line phone (remember those????)

Ok, I don't know if this is the right place for this but I'm one of those persons who heard the weird noise. I've actually heard it at two different locations. Once in the Foothills, near Claremont Ca, and now out here in the desert, in Palm Springs. Both my husband and myself heard this and went outside looking for what could be making this noise.

SO, today I began to research it. I keyed in to YouTube, "strange loud noise in Palm Springs CA" and lo and behold someone else heard it and to my surprize, people have heard it around the world. WTF? The noise is exactly what I heard . A grinding low pitch that goes into a roar. In Claremont, my husband convinced me it was road work on the 210 FWY. OK. but Then I heard it 2 weeks ago, here in PS. We're in a canyon with a giant mountain behind us.

Now, Twentynine Palms is maybe 40 miles from here, Camp Pendleton is on the other side of the mountain a hour away, but I know the sound of the jets, they refuel at the PS Airport quite frequently.

I have to know, HAS ANYONE ELSE HEARD THIS?

Thank you so much for the links. The more I learn about about HAARP I question the what they are trying to do.

I feel better that I'm not alone in hearing this noise. I accept that nature is beyond our control, but to do things to your fellow human being just because is what's depressing, your own kind trying to kill you. Interesting article in the NewYorker about the genetics of altruism....here's the link. Thanks again keep in touch.

There really is no proof of the world anytime soon. But if it does, I don't see why people are so afraid. The end of the world doesn't mean the end of humanity. And even if it does, is there not perhaps a life after this one?

this is in no way a world ending event. that being said, the idea of living this life only for your hopes of a next one is quaint.

but so long as there are children in the world, it is also morally abhorrent.
