Serious question: what is a dollar anyway?

A perfectly legitimate answer: an unsecured credit against the society as a whole.

When the ponzi scheme collapses, most people with 25 million dollars just aren't going to make it--unless they happen to be aware of things like peak oil and and the coming scramble for collateral, like a few are: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/property/news/article.cfm?c_id=8&objectid=10782742

"there are no foreign exchange fees, no late fees, no cash advance fees, no overdraft fees. "

Of course, we prefer to charge fees to people who might have trouble paying them in the hope of making them debt slaves. There is no point in charging the wealthy as it is merely an annoyance to them. Our society generally gives advantages to those who don't need them and deprives those who do.

Gold credit cards, like cocaine, are, as Herb Caen once put it, "God's way of telling you you make too much money."
