Rush Limbaugh 'Slut' Comments Drive Georgetown To Defend Student Sandra Fluke

WASHINGTON -- Officials at Georgetown University came to the defense of Sandra Fluke on Friday, criticizing radio host Rush Limbaugh for calling the third-year law student a "slut" and a "prostitute" after she spoke out on birth control insurance coverage.

John DeGioia, president of Georgetown, sent a letter to students and faculty praising Fluke's congressional testimony. "She was respectful, sincere, and spoke with conviction," he wrote. "She provided a model of civil discourse. This expression of conscience was in the tradition of the deepest values we share as a people."

In contrast, DeGioia had harsh words for Limbaugh's attacks on Fluke, saying they "can only be described as misogynistic, vitriolic, and a misrepresentation of the position of our student."

At Georgetown Law, 137 professors and staff members have signed a letter in support of Fluke. "As scholars and teachers who aim to train public-spirited lawyers, no matter what their politics, to engage intelligently and meaningfully with the world, we abhor these attacks on Ms. Fluke and applaud her strength and grace in the face of them," the letter says.

On Wednesday during his radio show, Limbaugh attacked Fluke for attempting to testify at a controversial House hearing in favor of the Obama administration's ruling on coverage of contraception by insurance plans. Limbaugh claimed that "she's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex."

After his initial comments sparked outrage, Limbaugh doubled down by offering to buy aspirin for all female students at Georgetown Law to place between their knees. That remark, a sarcastic encouragement not to have sex, echoed comments made by major Rick Santorum donor Foster Friess earlier in February.

Fluke responded to the controversy on Thursday in a press statement. "No woman deserves to be disrespected in this manner. This language is an attack on all women, and has been used throughout history to silence our voices," she said. "The millions of American women who have and will continue to speak out in support of women's health care and access to contraception prove that we will not be silenced."

As the father of three daughters and three stepdaughters, I am appalled that Clear Channel still defends the misogynist Rush Limbaugh. It's not a political issue, it's a common decency and public civility matter. I don't care if the sexist's name is Limbaugh or Maher, vulgar depictions of women are unnacceptable and if they don't clean up their acts they should be removed from the public airwaves and sent to some satellite circling high over the globe.

Clear Channel obviously condones Rush Limbaugh's calling a 24 year old college CO-ED a “SLUT” and a “PROSTITUTE”.

See their position below:

Clear Channel's Premiere Radio Networks Inc. hosts Limbaugh's program, one of the country's most popular talk radio shows. The company is supporting Limbaugh, whose on-air contract with Premiere runs through 2016.

"The contraception debate is one that sparks strong emotion and opinions on both sides of the issue," Premiere Networks said in a statement emailed Sunday by spokeswoman Rachel Nelson. "We respect the right of Mr. Limbaugh, as well as the rights of those who disagree with him, to express those opinions."

Since they respect everyone’s opinion, send them yours. Click the email address to open new email message:

Oh boy; they are out tonight. All the brainwashed GOPee'ers, GOPee'ing all over the place. Got to tell you: if you think what he calls adult women, is bad, you should see what 'macho' Rush says about little kindergarteners. He's about as much a man as a ______, and any of these dummies sticking up for him have a _______ rather than a _________. You clowns can rant and rave, but I'm sure that you're aware of what all this misongyny by Rush and the rest of the GOPee'ers is gonna do for them in the upcoming election. Could not happen to a nicer bunch of clods! Speaking of arrogance, this blunder has to be the worst in any election ever, cuz it's alienating more than one half of the voters. Tah, tah!

Yes, what on EARTH is GOP bigwigs thinking to wage an assault on women, who vote more than men, as well as on Latinos, who account for a substantial proportion of voters in some states? It is political genocide to think that white, hetero old men are going to decide this election.

This letter was very nice but I can't help wondering why it took Georgetown so long to issue one.
08:49 AM on 03/05/2012
Georgetown is a Roman Catholic university. You did not hear from Georgetown, but from some professors and staffers acting alone which is why it took some time. Georgetown University does not support reproductive rights, nor does it provide birth control (including vasectomies) as part of its health insurance. In fact, GU is one of the poster children for this issue since it is a Roman Catholic run organization that encompasses a university, law school, medical school, and hospital. I doubt its hospital provides any birth control services at all.

Here's what I'm gonna do I'm going to try to find a list of sponsors that continue to support this POS. When I buy a product or service I could have gotten from one of them I will send them an email telling them I just got something from a competitor and tell them why. I urge everyone that is a decent human being to do the same thing. Elections have consequences If a sponsor elects to stay with Limbaugh they are against common decency the consequence should be shunning.

Rush would fit perfectly in Saudi Arabia with his beliefs and attitude about women.

Progressives and the media have done a wonderful job in coordinating their message on this. We certainly would not want the debate to move towards anything having to do with religious freedom, entitlement mentality or intrusive federal gov't power.

If you don't want any government go to somalia man. Any power we give the federal government is, by definition, intrusive. We allow this intrusion because it serves us better provides more stability and helps. I'm not saying we should always allow intrusion. But it is certainly irrational to say we never want intrusion.

The FCC has a nice automated form where you can file complaints online. I suggest doing 1 or 2 against Rush and the rest of the Clear Channel Hate radio jocks daily.

She's a star. I hope she doesn't go into mainstream politics where her courage will be blunted by big money, but finds a voice ithorugh agitiation and protest.
