When oil prices rise, we all start paying attention to prices at the pump. But gas prices are just the beginning.

Perhaps you noticed the "fuel surcharge" added to the last package you shipped. Plane tickets have also already seen a hike, as airlines brace for higher fuel costs.

Here are 10 things that may get more expensive as oil prices rise:

Plastic

About 40 percent of an oil barrel yields gasoline; the rest generates a variety of other petroleum-based products, according to the Department of Energy. Anything made out of plastic is derived from petrochemicals--chemical products made from petroleum--and therefore, its production depends on the price of that barrel.

Isn't it funny how when gas went up the last time, so did everything else, because of gas. Strange, when it went back down, nothing else did. Now it is back up again, time to raise price again. Are we just stupid or what?

Whaaat? The price of food is connected to gas prices....No Sh*t Sherlock!

Breakthrough economic reporting here. Higher costs passed on to consumers. The best will be when the inflation index is reported and they discount this price rises as irrelevant or even more laughably, not real. God forbid they have to adjust benefits and interest on inflation linked investments, right?

Everything is changing and we have to change as well. One of the best things we can do is grow our gardens. Don't think of traditional garden spaces as your only option, but grow food everywhere you can--on your porch, rooftop, side yard where you used to put your garbage cans, at your mother-in-laws house, etc. If we grow our own veggies, we can survive on a lot less meat product. Keep in mind that one good squash plant can provide a massive amount of nutritional harvest, same with chinese long beans that can grow in a very tight space. These don't require much water and they can be used to extend your meals in a healthy way. GROW FOOD PEOPLE!

Growing food would be no problem if you can actually grow food in your garden. I've actually tried growing veggies in my yard only to have the plants wither and die for some odd reason.....ah well at least I tried lol

I'm single, my grocery used to be about 130 a month, going out to eat maybe twice. Now its over 200 and I don't go out anymore. I try to eat healthy, going to Whole Foods and such but DAMN. And gas hit $4 just this weekend. Summer trip is wavering.

Liberals have to be all for higher gas prices. After all, high prices means less driving, which means less global climate change.

Guess what? Our consumption nationally is now lower then since anytime siince 1981. http://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&s=A103400001&f=M

Liberals don't want higher prices, the price of it doesn't pollute, its the consumption of it.

1st, it's a lot more than far left eco activists blaming global warming on fossil fuel use. Indeed, the science is settled, unless you're a denier.

Are you a denier?

2nd, you would likely be correct that Reps want to see the economy fail before the election.

Did folks honestly not realize that oil touches EVERYTHING we touch?
01:38 PM on 03/05/2012
Since food and gas are NOT considered into inflation figures...we can all be safe in knowing that there will not be any inflation...true government in action.

So here is what we can do... Drive less, don't take that Sunday road trip, do something at home. Carpool, there are all kinds of social media ways to connect with folks going the same way. Put air in your tires and change your oil regularly. Makes a difference. Take the train where possible. Yeah, maybe transit is not as convenient and there is still a cost, but it is usually less than one person driving in a car. Contact your congresspeople and demand an end to the oil and gas subsidies. They are screwing us, we should try to reciprocate. And support wherever possible, even at the water cooler, the idea that we must move away from fossil fuels to sustainable renewable energy sources. No, it won't happen tomorrow, but everyone is always saying "think of the children." So, do.
11:01 AM on 03/05/2012
If oil subsidies end, who do you think will be making up the difference. The oil companies profit on a gallon of gas is $.08 - $.10. The various federal, state and local taxes are about 4 times that. Now, who is it you think is screwing you?
04:57 PM on 03/05/2012
Great post the people who post here think that the oil companies are making big money off a gallon and to beat all as you point out . The goverment has more taxes on a gal of gas than the company makes on a gallon. So it is time to get ris of thetaxes the roads won't fall apart.

The oil speculators, and big oil companies are screwing the american people. They report billions in profits every quarter and yet we still are paying higher and higher gas prices. And that in turns raises prices everywhere else for everything else, while we the average american is still stuck with the same old pay and no raise in sight to offset the costs of increased living due to the dang oil companies and the speculators....

For those advocating that Exxon Mobil not make any profits, I believe the Unions of America would have a big problem with that. You see, much of their pension money is invested in Exxon, and Halliburton.

For those advocating taxing oil companies to death, literally, imagine a world where the cost of all of the renewable energy is 3 times what it is today and then the government, bloated with increased taxes from fuel, adds mega taxes on to the renewable energy. This would be economic armageddon.

You believe but where is there any proof of the Unions of America(?), never heard of that particular group before, have any money invested in Exxon or Halliburton. I would like to see where you got your information.

CalPERS invests for the State of California unions and some of the SEIU $1.5 trillion in pension assets.

Note that they invest in all of the companies the left finds offensive.

Unions are having the same issue as everyone else with investments. Profits go up, stocks split and devalue as a result. Only the cash going to the company doesn't lose value it just gets piled higher and higher.

I've got a great idea. We'll call it the "Patriotic Presidential Algae Pond Starter Kit!" This way everybody--dads and kids--can grown their own algae, make their own oil, and sell it to--wait! What if Eric Holder got wind of this? There would be child labor laws to consider; dads could get arrested for putting their own young kids to work. Algae--in large volume--could be toxic. The EPA is known for fining people thousands of dollars per day if workers aren't wearing rubberized suits, boots and breathing masks. We'd have to be licensed, certified and bonafided. The Dept of Labor and local Health Department would no doubt shut down our operation before we could produce our first gallon. Bureaucracy puts the kabosh to business again. Oh, I guess we could start our pond in the vacant backyard of that abandoned, foreclosed house down the street and "bootleg" the stuff.
