Naveen Selvadurai, Foursquare Co-Founder, Is Leaving The Company

Naveen Selvadurai

Is there a way to check-out on Foursquare? Either way, Naveen Selvadurai is doing it. The location based service's co-founder announced on Sunday that March will be his last month at the company.

On his blog Selvadurai writes that while he will continue to be involved with Foursquare (he's on the board and will continue to advise the company), he hopes to get back to "what I love most -- being an entrepreneur, learning and building new things."

"[A]fter three years, I feel I’ve done all I can do and I’m moving on," Selvadurai writes in his blog post. "Going forward, I’m going to continue to be connected to the company: I’m on the board, I’ll still be advising, and I’m obviously going to be the single most vocal user. But the spring is time for things that are new, and I realize that I have a desire to do something new as well."

A Foursquare spokeswoman said in an email statement to The Huffington Post:

When Naveen and Dennis launched foursquare at SXSW 2009, they had a few hundred beta testers. Now, as we approach our third birthday, we have a community of over 15 million that has checked in over 1.5 billion times. This wouldn’t have been possible without Naveen’s creativity, vision, and tireless work. We’re sad to see him go, but excited to see what he builds next. We can’t thank him enough for everything he’s done to make foursquare what it is today.

The announcement comes days before Foursquare's third anniversary. Selvadurai and founding partner Dennis Crowley launched the service at Austin's tech, music and film extravaganza SXSW in 2009.

Foursquare allows users to share their real-time locations by "checking-in" at venues using an app on their smartphone. Each check-in confers points which go towards rewards such as becoming the "Mayor" of a location or acquiring venue specific badges. Check-ins also can be used to claim discounts and loyalty rewards.

In his blog post Selvadurai writes with pride about the company's quick success:

[I]t's hard to believe that now, three years later, instead of one hundred beta testers, the company has over a hundred incredibly talented employees helping us realize that vision. and they're building amazing things.

In June of last year, the company announced via blog post that there were more than 10 million Foursquare users around the world. Now, there are over 15 million. According to CNET, 750,000 merchants have signed up to participate in the service.

Selvadurai was a software architect for Sony when he began working with Crowley on a program that would allow people to digitally bookmark the places they'd been around the city.

In June 2011 TechCrunch reported that Foursquare had a reported valuation of between $500-600 million.

The danger comes from people being accustomed to reporting on their location. Soon it will not be an app but built into devices that can be turned on and off without judicial consent. If you want harmless fun send a post card. If you want your entire life recorded and monitored then by all means continue.

It's good to remember that the people behind this kind of technology are not into it for 'fun' ... they're into it to collect data about you and make money from it. Well okay, for them that's 'fun' ... but there will be a market backlash about privacy-surrendering tech like this.

Some of my Facebook "friends" use this thing constantly..."Joe Brown has checked in at Starbucks..." Why on earth do I want this information? I've "un-friended" a couple of notorious users. Stop spamming me.

I see 4Square getting bad vibes on here. It's stupid fun thats all it is. You can be mayor of a Mcdonalds and its bragging rights to your buddies. It's not that serious and maybe that's why its pretty cool.

Stupid fun that allows the service to collect your data for profiling, marketing, and other uses for personalization. No, thanks.

I love comments like yours when you assume that people that you know are the only representative population. If only you did a little research or Googling around you'd find out that many of the social networking service users are - prepare to be shocked - in the late 20s and mid 30s range. Not everything that seems stupid is used primarily by teenagers.

Hey everybody, I just checked into someplace....WOW! I must live an amazing life that I have to tell everyone in the world I am at some coffee house ordering a latte. Oh wait, Sally just posted that she checked into do her laundry...she is now the mayor of laundry town!

This is the greatest creation ever!!!!! Now please excuse me while I go on live a real life, with real people and actually have a social network that does not need a like button.

This is the dumbest idea yet. Letting the burglars know you aren't home isn't a good idea.

I do not understand the concept of 4Square. Who really wants people to know where they are all the time, and why. Who really cares what their friends are doing each minute of the day.

Sounds a bit narcissistic to me

Coming from somebody that works in the 'startup world' - I abhor people like him, 'products' like FourSquare, and the superficial ridiculousness that is Web 2.0. Can't wait to see smart people actually dedicating themselves to building something that delivers a useful service to people, instead of trading on the insanity that is a cultural obsession with a lack of privacy.

The new update sucks so bad I was unable to get it to work, (couldn't check in). I gave up and deleted it. You have to tweet them to get tech support, it is awful! What a poorly managed company if a user has to to wait 3 days to get a reply and it's a useless reply. I could not find a way to contact them besides twitter. I used the app daily now no more.

You seem to be the only commenter here who sees anything interesting in this company's "product." Can you explain it?
08:34 AM on 03/05/2012
I use it to get discounts on stuff I already buy. For example, when I "check in" at my local coffee shop, I get $.75 off my coffee. At another restaurant, the "mayor" gets a free dinner every week.

There is a contingent that prides themselves on becoming mayor at as many places as possible. I don't really understand that, but for deals and discounts, I think it's pretty good.

Remember when we used to MAKE THINGS in this country? I still can't figure out what this ridiculous company does? And who in the world would want to "check in"? 15 million users? Unbelievable.

They get people and advertisers to come to their site. I know several people who use. Friends want to tell their other friends what public place they are in and what they are doing.

Don't you want to instantly tell all your friends that you are at a ice cream shop in the town square. Well maybe not for everyone but if a slinky can sell billions anything is possible.

Well, foursquare is made in the USA and you can be proud. So are the Apple designs, the Microsoft operating system, the Google web sites, etc. This part of the American industry is well and thriving.
