'Bering Sea Gold': Cody Survives Lighting-Fast Accident On Deck (VIDEO)

Cody Survives Accident On Deck Of 'Bering Sea Gold'

It's risky work on "Bering Sea Gold" (Fri., 10 p.m. EST on Discovery), with perhaps as much danger coming from the ships the crews are working on as it is from the ocean or undersea equipment. When out on the cold waters, that ship is the only thing between life and death, and yet, it is a complex arrangement of moving parts.

When a box came loose that the cables ran through, the crew decided to weld it to the deck in order to try and get back to work as soon as possible. But either the welding job wasn't sufficient to handle the force against it from the cables, or they didn't give it enough time to solidify. Either way, Cody got quite a scare during an interview near the box on the deck.

"This is kind of a red zone to me now," he said. "I don't even want to stand here."

Not a fraction of a second after uttering those words, the box gave and whipped at him, knocking him off balance and actually off the side of the ship. Cody quickly grabbed on to avoid going fully into the water, but he needed assistance getting back up.

Upon later inspection, he saw how lucky he was with the cut he sustained on his leg. With the force and speed that the box came loose, it could have easily taken a much more substantial chunk out of his leg, not to mention, it could have pitched him fully into the ocean afterwards. In the future, Cody will likely heed his own words and speak of dangerous areas not while standing in them, but from a safe distance.

Catch "Bering Sea Gold" on Fridays at 10 p.m .EST on Discovery.
