DPS Advises Against Spring Break Trips To Mexico

AUSTIN, Texas -- A law enforcement agency in Texas has raised safety concerns and advised students on spring break to avoid Mexico.

The Department of Public Safety on Tuesday issued the advisory, citing continued violence throughout Mexico.

The U.S. State Department last month recommended that Americans avoid travel to all or parts of 14 of 31 Mexican states. It's the widest travel advisory issued by the U.S. since Mexico stepped up its drug war in 2006.

DPS Director Steven McCraw says Mexican drug cartel violence and other criminal activity represent a significant safety threat, even in some resort areas.

With one hundred million American drug users it would be better for the government to tell Americans to avoid using drugs for they are the cause of the drug cartel violence in Mexico.

If our own government, acting through the ATF, would stop ARMING the cartels, that would go a long way toward reducing the violence too...

Spring break? Vacation? Aside from an occasional caving trip, which never lasted more than 3 days, Spring Break was a time to work - I was a machinist and instrument designer. I had a deal with my professor I could work insane hours in such periods and we would book the hours. Then during the normal class period we could feed the booked up hours into our work schedule to fill it out. It helped with the costs and by keeping a private accounting, we leveled the hours we charged so that the administration never got bent out of shape over our work hours. I had some close calls, like walking into a lab one Sunday and smelling Hydrogen Cyanide, but I became a chemical safety specialist very rapidly and survived my college years.

El año pasado entraron aún más turistas que en años anteriores. Este año se espera alrededor de 22 millones de turistas extranjeros. No todo mundo tiene miedo.

New Orleans has a higher murder rate than any city in Mexico with the exception of Ciudad Juarez. Detroit and Washington DC have murder rates higher than Tijuana did last year. Read the State Dept. warning in its entirety instead of the blubs on the web. It paints a much different picture than you have been hearing even though it is still too broad.

Should we also be receiving travel warnings about East LA and other cities with a barrio centric culture?
Just wondering.

I bet the DPS gives travel warnings to anybody going to wherever you are due to the toxic levels of racism.

They would have to put out a travel warning to avoid you.

So I have it wrong and East LA is a warm, friendly welcoming and crime free area of Greater LA? Nothing unusual going on there. Just another example of a typical American neighborhood. Mon & Pop business, ice cream parlors, kids playing in the streets, well-kept parks, trash free streets and everyone greets you with "Hi neighbor." Sort a Mayberry transported to LA.
Sorry if the truth hurts but you are defending the indefensible.
Why do you see uncomfortable truth as racism? Is it because you are embarrassed by East LA and similar neighborhoods? If you aren’t you should be. In fact we all should be embarrassed to have let this happen to a once vibrant and attractive part of the city.

Don't be mad about a warning people. Ciudad Juarez is currently the most dangerous city in the entire world. Sinaloa and Michoacan are mafia run states and dangerous to even local Mexicanos. Any government has a duty to it's people to issue travel warnings to any dangerous place. I hope one day things get better, because I'd love to go to those beautiful places.
