Fran Drescher: Every Girl Needs A Gay Ex-Husband

Fran Drescher, star of TV Land's "Happily Divorced," stopped by "Live! With Kelly" (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) to promote the second season of her sitcom and opened up about the events that inspired the show.

Drescher was married to Peter Marc Jacobson from 1978–1999, but the two divorced after Jacobson came out of the closet. Her sitcom is based on that experience.

"I do have a gay ex-husband," Drescher told Nick Lachey and Kelly Ripa with a laugh. "Every girl should!"

The former "Nanny" star, which Drescher executive produced alongside Jacobson, said about two-thirds of the way through their marriage, Jacobson started therapy and said he thought he was bisexual. He told Drescher he had never acted on his attraction to men and wanted to remain married to her. Drescher told Lachey and Ripa that she was committed to making the marriage work, but eventually, it clicked that their marriage wasn't going to be the same.

"One time we went to a restaurant and he said to the waiter, 'Didn't you used to work at Hugo's?' I didn't know this guy from a hole in the wall and I thought to myself, 'K, he was probably checking him out,'" Drescher said. "So once that seed was planted, it might have been the beginning of the end."

The second season of "Happily Divorced" premieres Wed., Mar. 7 at 10 p.m. EST on TV Land
