Homemade Cannon Kills Woman, Injures Man In Potrero, Calif.

Cannon

SAN DIEGO — A man was arrested Tuesday after a homemade cannon blasted through his mobile home, killing his girlfriend in a remote mountain community near San Diego, authorities said.

Richard Fox, 39, shot the cannon after loading it with fireworks powder, said San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. David Martinez. His 38-year-old girlfriend was found dead from shrapnel wounds when authorities arrived at the home.

Fox was treated at a hospital for shrapnel wounds to his right leg and arrested for investigation of exploding a device resulting in death, Martinez said. Three other adults and a 4-year-old girl who were inside the home escaped injury.

Preliminary evidence suggested Fox was under the influence of alcohol, Martinez said. Investigators had not established a motive or determined if the blast was accidental.

"He gave us his version of the story. We want to corroborate that based on the evidence we find at the scene," Martinez said.

It was unclear if Fox had an attorney.

Fox lived at the home with his girlfriend, whose name was not released, and the 4-year-old girl, who was to be placed with a relative. Martinez declined to identify the three other adults who were inside the home.

The blast occurred in Potrero, a community of about 700 people on the Mexican border, about 40 miles east of San Diego. In 2008, military contractor Blackwater Worldwide pulled plans for training facility there after voters recalled five members of a planning board who supported the project.

John Arnold, a neighbor, told U-T San Diego that Fox worked as a handyman and lived in the home for about six years.

"He liked experimenting with guns, and it looks like this experiment went bad," he told the newspaper.

Sandra Barranon, who lives at the mobile home park, told U-T San Diego that she knew the couple for about 10 years. They were not married, she said.

The woman who died was unemployed, enjoyed doing The New York Times crossword puzzle, and kept the trailer neat and clean, Barranon said.

Real cannons are dangerous enough especially if loaded wrong i can't imagine how you could think a homemade cannon would be a good idea.

Homemade cannon? What happened to homemade bread, homespun fabric, homemade furniture or even homemade houses....but homemade CANON??? How insane can people get?
Talk about overkill!
I am glad the little girl escaped physical injury, though I wish the adults in her life took better care of her emotional health and not mess with big guns in small spaces. Especially the man--WHAT WAS HE THINKING?
ugh. Some things really should not happen. Because they should not be there to begin with!!!
Some stupid just becomes bigger stupid with time.

The article didn't say it was loaded with a cannon ball or any projectile...it only said the suspect loaded it with "fireworks powder". Since they didn't say it was loaded with BLACK POWDER, which is what a cannon is normally loaded with, it may be safe to assume it was FLASH POWDER, which is used in miniscule amounts in firecrackers and fireworks of that nature and is many times more powerful than black powder. If that was the case, the cannon simply blew up and it's shrapnel were pieces of the cannon. I doubt it was aimed at the mobile home, since in an explosion like that, the shrapnel would not fly forward but would in fact fly to the sides along the bore axis of the cannon. Regardless...it was a horrific tragedy that could have been avoided if the suspect had proper knowledge and experience with cannons and the safety rules that must always be observed and followed. My heart goes out to the woman that was killed and her family.

Wow, from the headline, I thought the guy shot the cannon at another house to attack his girllfriend. Why was this guy loading a cannon inside his house?!!! Why did he install a fuse or otherwise light it INSIDE A HOUSE?

i wonder if it was an ACME cannon. i wonder if he just watched Wile E Coyote try to kill the road runner again and thought 'Hey I can make a better cannon than he's got...'

Was that last sentence supposed to be a makeshift eulogy? So, the nicest thing her companions could say about her was "She kept a mean trailer." I guess it wasn't worth mentioning that her taste in men was questionable. I wonder if he considers it a lucky shot?

I'm confused. Did she die from a projectile fired from the cannon or was she killed from the cannon exploding? I'm guessing the later.

Almost sounds like in attempting to make a cannon the fool actually made a massive pipe bomb

I know this would save many lives and is obvious, but I'll say it anyway. A loaded weapon of any sort (even when completely empty) should be pointed at what you want to destroy or kill only. If you have no intention of blasting what your weapon is aiming at, then don't even point it anywhere near that direction. I know no one is perfect, but his cannon obviously had to be pointed straight at his trailer for this to happen. Just a weird deal all together.

Actually it would appear his canon blew up like a giant pipe bomb.

Ahh, I wondered about that. I suppose it did say his girlfriend died of shrapnel wounds. He must have put a bit too much "Chinese gunpowder" down the barrel.

It is not a good idea to mix cannons with alcohol.

Duh, of course. But he seems to be even more 'limited' (we're not supposed to use some words these days if we want to remain PC, but use your imagination...) than most people are...

Now, I would wonder if his lawyer (he'll need one) is going to suggest that 'there was no warning on the homemade cannon about not mixing alcohol with cannon-operation'...so he was not-guilty...or some other crazy notion.

Yes, there is definitely more wrong "upstairs" with him. Most people would not fire a cannon after a drink even if one was available to them.
