Marriage Stress: First Year Of Marriage May Be Most Difficult (VIDEO)

WATCH: How Stress Can Affect Your Marriage

Managing the stress of everyday life may be the ultimate test for newlyweds in their first year of marriage, according to new research.

In this clip from the "Today Show," Sharon Jayson, a behavior and relationship reporter for USA Today, and Dr. Judith Sills, a clinical psychologist, discuss new research on stress in marriage from dating website eHarmony.

According to Dr. Sills, everyone's emotional needs are different. "We all want to do it right -- we are looking for a responsive partner," she said. "But what's responsive and helpful to me, may not be helpful to my husband."

And that quickly becomes apparent for newlyweds. "That first year of marriage, I'm teaching my partner what I need. I'm trying to listen to what he needs," said Sills.

"You need to function as a team," added Jayson. "Stress makes you think, 'Are you an enemy or an ally?'"
