Democratic Senators Ask John Boehner Not To Introduce Blunt Amendment In House

Blunt Amendment

In a "hail mary" pass on International Women's Day, all 12 Democratic women in the Senate sent a letter to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) asking him to abandon his plans to continue the Senate GOP's recent fight against contraception coverage in the House.

"We are asking that you abandon the promise you have made to bring legislation to the House floor similar to the Blunt amendment, which was defeated in the Senate last week, and which would turn the clock back on women's access to health care," the senators, led by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), wrote. "At a time when 99 percent of sexually active women in the U.S. have used birth control, its role in the lives of women and their families is hard to understate. ... That is why the recent Republican attacks on birth control access have been so eye-opening for American women. For most American women, the battle over contraception was settled a half century ago."

After the Senate last week voted down Sen. Roy Blunt's (R-Mo.) amendment, which would have allowed any employer with moral objections to opt out of covering birth control or any other kind of health service, Boehner vowed to continue the fight in the House.

"I think it's important for us to win this issue," he said. "And there are a lot of ways to do that. There's one in the Senate. We have a couple in the House. It's matter of how we proceed."

Legislation has already been introduced in the House that would roll back the Obama administration's new contraception rule requiring most employers to cover birth control with no co-pay for their employees. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry's (R-Neb.) Respect for Rights of Conscience Act, the companion bill to the Blunt Amendment, already has 220 cosponsors.

But the GOP's attempts to limit women's birth control coverage are not going over well with voters. According to a new poll by EMILY's List, 60 percent of voters oppose the Blunt Amendment. Nearly half of respondents, including 40 percent of Republicans asked, said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate if he or she supported the Blunt Amendment.

"Women have had enough," the Democratic women wrote in the letter. "As we have heard from countless women in our home states and here on Capitol Hill, they are tired of being targets for a political strategy that endangers their health care and they want it to stop. We hope that you can answer their calls, and ours. It's time for you to put an end to the attacks on women's health care and to work with the Senate to get back to the American people's top priority: creating jobs and boosting our economy."

This political stunt by the Republicans has nothing to do with religious freedom.  If they were concerned about religious freedom, then they would push for the freedom of religion for every American whether they agreed with that religion or not.

This is about politics with the Republicans.  They want "small government" until they want the government to tell women what to do with their own  Read More...

Or... or or... because I assume someone must've thought about this: no sex at all. (Putting aside the health benefits of contraceptive methods). All of this, breaks down to women not being in control of their reproductive health. Fine, no contraception: no sex. Married, unmarried. No condoms, nor pills, no sex. No help for health, NO SEX. Because these laws and bills passed by men don't benefit from their wives and mistresses having contraceptives. Right.

I'd like to understand why it is that an employer is being forced to cover the insurance costs for something that they find morally reprehensible. If the woman is so hard up for birth control, she can...
A) Find a job with an employer who will cover it
B) Pay the $15-50/mo herself.

First they force us to buy insurance (to take effect by 2014... can't wait to see the costs skyrocket!) and then they tell the employers that not only do they need to purchase coverage for their employees, but they can't even decide what type of coverage TO buy!

Then they'll post legislation (if it's not already in the unread sections of the Health Care Act) that will make it legal for doctors to perform abortions without the mother's consent if the baby will be a cost to society... such as someone with ADD, someone with a heart condition, someone with AIDS, etc. (You don't think it can happen? I never thought we'd have a government telling the people they HAD to buy a product, or go to jail!)

Wake up, America!

A main reason everyone needs at least basic health insurance is because when an uninsured person shows up at the E.R. or a clinic & the bill is "higher because without a policy there is no contracted discount", it costs the Taxpayer a lot more money. AND those who are able to pay their bill. More & more county hospitals have closed due to the financial burden. Being insured can help prevent bankruptcy for bills that to many others aren't that big. Too many times people have chosen not to have even a major medical policy which they could afford, because why spend money on that versus something fun. The bottom line is: how does the U.S. take care of the Uninsured population without overburdening the taxpayers? Do we just refuse Any care they can't pay for? (preventive & routine care, too) There are a lot of people With insurance who can't get adequate mental health care because of limited visits (insur. coverage), & co-insurances. I think there are quite a few high-buck life saving medical procedures where the patient has to have a large portion of the cost paid for Before treatment. This may be due to it being Experimental.

Well, they should get their basic health insurance. Congress can repeal the law regarding ER services that care for those uninsured. At some point people must become responsible and stop demanding government or employers provide all this. That is not living in a free society. Taxpayers should never be burdened by these social issues. Society needs to get back to volunteering medical services for the uninsured and other such issues could easily be handled through state governments, but the feds have intruded and states have allowed it.

no one is forcing the employer to cover anything. The Insurance companies are being required to cover prescription medicine but that has nothing to do with the employer.

The employer can choose to offer health insurance as part of an employees compensation, but how the employee uses that plan is still between their doctor and them.

Should an employer be able to tell you which brand of food to buy, what restaurant you choose to eat at, what movies you want to go to with the wages they pay you?

No, your wages, your choice.

And you dont have to purchase health care if you dont want to, you will get a tax penalty of under $1000 for the whole year by choosing not to be covered if you can afford it. If you cant afford insurance, no penalty.

The rest of your comment seems to just be another variation of the false death panel conspiracy theory.

And you only go to jail if you commit tax fraud by first not getting a health plan, then refuse to pay the IRS penalty, and then once you continue to refuse to pay your taxes, the IRS may pursue court based solutions that can involve jail time. But that is no different than any other rule regarding non-payment of your taxes. If you dont pay your taxes, you may end up in jail, but that is how it has been since the inception of the IRS.

So if the government IPOB (panel) decides that some particular cancer treatment is too expensive and usually not cost-effective then they should be able to mandate employers to NOT cover those cancer treatments in the insurance policies they provide.? Even if the employer believes it unconscionable not to do so. ? Think about it.

Women - and men - need to contact each of their federal representatives who support bringing such legislation to a vote and tell them that they will not support their re-election on that basis.

This is an attempt by the Republicans and those Democrats who support these type of bills to extend 1st Amendment Rights to corporations (Citizens United), when the Bill of Rights was never intended to be expressed by any entity other than individuals. Read the Declaration of Independence . . . !

The one thing I keep thinking about during this ridiculous debacle: Who does the GOP think these women are sleeping with? Plants? Boyfriends and husbands really, really appreciate access to birth control for their loved ones too, and you will see evidence of that in the voting booth.
06:03 PM on 03/23/2012
NO ONE is denying access to birth control!! PLEASE!! The Catholic Church should not be mandated by a tyranical government to provide birth control, however. But, really, freedom and access for every American woman to obtain contraceptives is not even on the chopping block. And, believe it or not, some women practice family planning without contraceptives! Gasp! Or do not have a problem paying for their own contraceptives if they choose freely to work for an employer whose insurance does not cover them. Please think deep enough to realize this is about religious freedom, yours and all Americans, even if you are not Catholic. Let's not go down this dangerous road of government suppressing religious freedom and forcing Americans to do things against their consciences.

It seems odd to me that when you look at the list of "preventative services" you see lots of screenings and tests to be provided free of co-pays. examinations, counseling and immunizations.

but no drugs except for birth control. This is wrong IMOH. It should be like a prozac or tri-cor prescription. if no then why are blood pressure drugs not covered? with them you are fine and without them you have high blood pressure.

I am call for coverage and access... but why no co-pay?

Because contraception saves the taxpayers money. Lots of money. And, actually, you have a valid point. Perhaps in the future, President Obama's healthcare plans can address that. Speak to your representative about no co-pay for life-saving prescriptions....
