'Terra Nova': Netflix Could Save Canceled Steven Spielberg-Produced Drama

Netflix Looking To Save 'Terra Nova' From Extinction

According to EW, 20th Century Fox TV, the studio behind "Terra Nova," is in preliminary talks with Netflix about picking up the show. In recent months, Netflix has made bold moves in beefing up its original programming content. Besides ordering a new season of Fox's cult-hit comedy "Arrested Development," the streaming/DVD loaning service has also trotted out "Lilyhammer," a new web series starring Steve Van Zandt, and begun work on Kevin Spacey's "House of Cards."

Thanks to Netflix and 20th Century Fox TV's deal to revive "Arrested Development," "Terra Nova's" chances of renewal are a tad higher. After Netflix ordered a new season of the cult favorite to precede the motion picture, 20th Century Fox TV Chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman said the studio prides itself on breaking rules by bringing back canceled shows like "Family Guy" and "Futurama."

"We build brands at this studio which are so distinctive that audiences still clamor for them years after they go off the air. 'Arrested Development' is a great example of that has stood the test of time," Newman and Walden said in a statement. "This innovative deal with Netflix represents a new business model that is extremely exciting and opens the door for a wide range of new collaborations."

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the "Terra Nova" talks between 20th Century Fox TV and Netflix.
According to THR, "Terra Nova," which was produced by Steven Spielberg, averaged 7.5 million total viewers and 2.6 million in the 18-49 demo over its first season. However, it wasn't the hit Fox had hoped for and its sizable production budget certainly didn't help.
