Web Star Born: Kony Video Gets Millions Of Views

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — If Joseph Kony lived in relative anonymity before this week, he's an Internet star now.

A video about the atrocities carried out by Kony's Lord's Resistance Army has gone viral, racking up millions more views seemingly by the hour.

The marketing campaign is an effort by the advocacy group Invisible Children to vastly increase awareness about a jungle militia leader who is wanted for atrocities by the International Criminal Court and is being hunted by 100 U.S. Special Forces advisers and local troops in four Central African countries.

The group's 30-minute video, which was released Monday, had more than 32 million views on YouTube by Thursday. The movie is part of an effort called KONY 2012 that targets Kony and the LRA.

"Kony is a monster. He deserves to be prosecuted and hanged," said Col. Felix Kulayigye, the spokesman for Uganda's military.

But Kulayigye said that Kony's forces — once thousands strong — have been so degraded that he no longer considers Kony a threat to the region. Because of the intensified hunt for Kony, his forces split into smaller groups that can travel the jungle more easily.

Experts estimate that the LRA now has only about 250 fighters. Still, the militia abducts children, forcing them to serve as soldiers or sex slaves, and even to kill their parents or each other to survive. The LRA now operates in Congo, the Central African Republic and South Sudan.

Uganda, Invisible Children and (hash)stopkony were among the top 10 trending terms on Twitter among both the worldwide and U.S. audience on Wednesday night, ranking higher than New iPad or Peyton Manning. Twitter's top trends more commonly include celebrities than fugitive militants.

Jolly Okot was abducted in 1986 by the militia group that later became the LRA. The then-18-year-old could speak English so was valuable to the militants. She was also forced to have sex.

Today, Okot is the Uganda country director for Invisible Children, in charge of 105 employees. She said the group is helping 800 people affected by LRA violence to attend high school and university. She said the program has given hope to kids who previously dropped out of the education system.

"The most exciting thing about this film is that I'm so grateful that the world has been able to pay attention to an issue that has long been neglected," Okot said. "I think it is an eye-opener and I think this will push for Joseph Kony to be apprehended, and I think justice will get to him."

Ben Keesey, Invisible Children's 28-year-old chief executive officer, said the viral success shows their message resonates and that viewers feel empowered to force change. It was released on the website www.kony2012.com.

The burst of attention has also brought with it some criticism on Internet sites of Invisible Children's work, including the ratio of the group's spending on direct aid, its rating by the site Charity Navigator, and a 2008 photo of three Invisible Children members holding guns alongside troops from the country now known as South Sudan.

Invisible Children posted rebuttals to the criticism on its website, saying that it has spent about 80 percent of its funds on programs that further its mission, about 16 percent on administration and management, and about 3 percent on fundraising. The group said its accountability and transparency score is currently low because it has four independent voting members on its board of directors and not five, but that it is seeking to add a fifth. The group said the three workers in the photo thought it would be a good "joke" photo for family and friends.

Kony's Ugandan rebel group is blamed for tens of thousands of mutilations and killings over the last 26 years.

Rear Adm. Brian L. Losey, the top U.S. special operations commander for Africa, told reporters last month that U.S. troops are now stationed in bases in Uganda, Congo, South Sudan and Central African Republic as part of the anti-LRA fight. Losey said there's been a decrease in the lethality of LRA activities attributable to U.S. and partner nation efforts.

Ruhakana Rugunda, the Ugandan diplomat who led the country's failed peace negotiations with Kony in 2006, said the work of organizations such as Invisible Children preserves the memory of an insurgency whose brutal legacy should never be forgotten. The talks with Kony, mediated by South Sudan, ended in 2008 after the rebel leader refused to sign the final peace agreement, saying he could not guarantee his security once he left the bush.

The last known images of Kony show him shaking hands, and sometimes smiling, with dignitaries visiting his camp. Some images showed him wearing a suit and shiny black shoes.

"Kony gives you the impression that he is harmless, that he cannot catch a fly," Rugunda said, recalling his conversations with Kony, who was an altar boy before he became an elusive rebel leader.

Rugunda last saw Kony in a forested camp in eastern Congo before the rebel leader and his men fled to the Central African Republic, where they have retained the capacity to harass villagers for food.

Rugunda said that capturing Kony alive would set in motion a "full accountability mechanism" in which the world would get to know how it came to be that Kony committed the many crimes he is accused of.

I hope this video widens public awareness about child protection in general... child soldiers are not specific to Ugandan armies, or to Africa - there are child soldiers all over the world. Hopefully the powerful emotions had can be channeled into self-education. http://bit.ly/pa2056

KayDimonds, it is an interesting point of view that you have bought up. I am wondering if you would give yourself the same punishment as what you feel that Joseph Kony deserves. Think of everything that you have ever done against another person. Would you want to punish yourself for these actions ? Would you fight yourself if say the things that you have done in the past decided that you needed to face them ?? or would you rather be taught how to work through these and gain the understanding of what you have done and why it effected others.
If you or anyone else would like to see my perspective on these events please go to http://consciousbuilding.blogspot.com.au/2012/03/kony-2012.html and share it. If you wish to gain greater understanding of my perspective, please leave a comment

The reason this video and this movement struck a cord in so many, I included, is because these are not adults. These are children, young teens who live in fear sleep in fear; from day to day. Never knowing if that day would be their last day of freedom before being either killed or carted off to become a soldier. Forced to kill their mother's and fathers, forced to kill friends, forced to kill family. Watching as their loved ones died right in front of their faces. This is not some regular war with one nation against another, no. This is just wrong. ALL around. And Joseph Kony should be caught and he should pay for his sins against these kids. It's one thing to start a war, it's another to be a monster and kill just for the sake of killing which he is doing.

Nothing surprises me anymore. This has been going on for years and now due to a slick media ploy, young Americans are upset. Of course, most are concerned about the atrocities committed around the world, especially regarding children but this has nothing to do with that. Frightening how mind-controlled and easily manipulated the general population is to fall right into the agenda of TPTB. You really think Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, George Bush, Condaleza Rice & the several others listed on the Kony 2012 site give a rats a** about those children?! So many things wrong with this to even begin to get into.

What about the white genocide going on in South Africa that is not being reported?! Oh, that's not "politically correct" to report. Maybe some of the young Americans who this propaganda is focused on should google about the white genocide and the atrocities being committed regarding that subject instead of sheepishly chasing a "boogeyman" named Kony that hasn't been relevant since 2006! And it's one man! People really think that arresting or killing this one man will solve or put a dent into what's going on?! Come on! Think for yourselves, outside of the box and ask what is the overall agenda! One being the many resources in Africa that the West does not want to allow the Chinese to obtain & so much more...

Those saying Kony 2012 is at least good regarding awareness....
Wake up! You are being played.

Why in the world would the USA care about this? There's no oil to control, no land to control, and worse yet, these are BLACK children. So who's going to give a dang about this? No one, that's who. I bet if Kony was kidnapping and killing White children, dude would long ago been strung up in the highest tree.

Check again- A huge deposit of crude oil was found in Uganda late last year, about the same time as Obama announced they were sending troops (though they have been there for a while longer). Uganda has other new 'friends' including China since the discovery. Make more sense now?

So many people have never worked in a charity or not-for-profit business and have no idea what they are talking about when they use the word "scam" for this. I've worked in marketing in NFP's most of my life. Minimal pay for maximum hours, board meetings from 'elected' officials telling you how to change your job, and zero thanks at the end of the day. I consider myself good at my job, but in 25 years I have never had as much attention as Russell has gotten for Kony 2012 in 4 days. Agree or disagree, at least you're all talking. The conspiracy theorists have been alive forever and will continue to spew their warped thoughts on everything. Let me ask you this: if your boss told you to buy equipment or supplies from your own pocket and not be reimbursed, would you do it? Of course not! Russell can't fly back and forth to Africa, raise his son, and make a movie without funds. He's not a rich man, just a normal dad trying to make the world a better place for his son and generations like him. Is that so bad? Who hasn’t hoisted a toast to world peace? He just wants help spreading the word. I’m a mom and a grandma, and I will continue to spread the word about Kony.

Friend Marvin Edgar Nuwagaba who is from Uganda:
"Awareness?? You do not create awareness by glossing over the major issues and making a 30 minute video that does little to educate people of what is really happening but rather, tugs at a few emotional strings about suffering in Africa?? That's not awareness, that's a farce is what it is."

This group is shady, and people blindly accepting their credibility are faux activists.

Their total expenses for 2011 were $8,894,632 and of that, $2,810,681 were spent on direct services.

That is 6,083,951 of what was given to them not going to direct help.

Where there are many, many other charities that have much higher proportion.

2 stars in Accountability and Transparency. Why won't they allow outside audits?

No, sharing a video and hanging up a few posters won't solve all of the world's problems, but it MIGHT help save a few lives. And those good intentions will do a lot more than your cynicism will.

Why is America watching a video of Joseph Kony and his army of 250? Sudan is the next country north of Uganda. Sudan's government has killed 1-2 million Christians in southern Sudan. Kony is an amateur compared to Mao at 76 miilion dead Chinese, Stalin at 60 million dead Russians and Ukranians, and Hiltler at 55 million dead Europeans. Death by democide/government has been the most effective way to kill it's own people. Sorry for the facts but reality is harsher than a video.

Not disagreeing with what you said but if you're going to make valid points you should probably leave out genocidal maniacs that are already dead. Not much we can do about it now.

As I recall President Obama appointed a person who claimed to idolize Mao. We can't do anything about Mao. He's dead, but we can make sure our government doesnt follow him.
