Alabama Immigration Law Puts Pelham High School's 'Charlie Brown' Play On Hold

Alabama Immigration Charlie Brown

By JAY REEVES   03/ 9/12 04:49 PM ET  AP

PELHAM, Ala. -- Alabama's crackdown on illegal immigration may keep Charlie Brown and Snoopy from performing in a high school musical.

A public high school has put the production of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" on hold after a New York licensing house that owns the rights to the play refused to submit a document required under the immigration law.

The licensing company, Tams-Witmark Music Library Inc., relented and submitted the document Friday following inquiries from The Associated Press, school officials said.

Pelham High School still must purchase the rights to the play, which can cost more than $1,200, before the show will go on.

Acting groups – even student theater troupes – must pay for the right to use scripts or risk lawsuits.

Rehearsals had been going on for weeks before the company's initial move forced teachers to pull the plug, frustrating student actors.

"They, and their teachers, have already put in many hours of preparation and hard work to have it taken away from them because of politics," said Donna Vildibill, whose son Andy was cast as piano-playing Schroeder in the musical. "As usual, it's the children that get the raw end of any deal in Alabama."

The Manhattan-based company declined comment. "We don't discuss our business," said chairman Robert Hut.

According to its website, the company owns the rights to some of the most popular stage shows, including "A Chorus Line," "Camelot," "Oliver" and "My Fair Lady."

The immigration law, passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature last year and signed by Gov. Robert Bentley, requires companies doing business with the state or local governments in Alabama to submit sworn documents certifying they don't knowingly employ illegal immigrants. Companies also must promise they are enrolled in the federal E-Verify program, a database for screening workers for citizenship.

Federal courts ruling on lawsuits filed by the Obama administration and others have blocked key sections of the law since it was supposed to take effect last fall, but not the provision that requires the vendor certifications.

A spokeswoman for Bentley, Jennifer Ardis, said about five companies have refused to submit documentation mandated by the law, but the state still has 4,733 registered vendors and has awarded 96 contracts since the law took effect.

Designed to make it difficult for illegal immigrants to live or work in Alabama, the law has created confusion since it took effect. Some local governments are requiring that all vendors submit documents certifying they don't have workers who are illegal immigrants. But Cindy Warner, a spokeswoman for schools in Shelby County, said all that was required from the New York company was a form stating it doesn't have employees in Alabama. County schools have sent thousands of letters to other vendors asking them to comply with the law, she said.

"We have mailed forms to every vendor we do business with trying to determine if they have operations in Alabama," she said. "We've probably sent 8,000."

Warner said Pelham High teachers are planning an alternative show in case they can't pull off a deal for "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown."

At least they are promoting the arts at Pelham High School! I guess they were not informed that arts are only for private school elites like the Obama girls. Regular public school is only supposed to be drill and skill training for followers. It seems that creativity development and leadership quality promotion is only for the chosen.

This company simply did not want to answer this question, or didn't have the time to do so. It didn't really care. Conservatives complain about interfering govt regulations placed on companies and how they do business all the time except when it comes to their ideological points, then it's interfere as much as possible. Companies can decide for themselves whether or not they want to comply and do business with an intrusive state. Here, it sounds like they couldn't be bothered with this and didn't want to.

If they wanted the business badly enough, they certainly have the capacity and capability to fill out a single form and to address the envelope and put on a stamp.  If all businesses and companies and employers across the nation would do what they should be doing to ensure all their employees have the legal right to work here, none of us would be dealing with this at all. At least some states are trying to stop the damage to our workforce and families, our tax base (schools and infrastructure) and our society. We don't need the freeloaders, the corruption and the damage. Cut them off from all the freebies they come to take from us and most will stop coming and many here will leave.

This has actually been proven to be wrong. Deportation by attrition doesn't really work either because families simply stay and gut it out. What you have to understand is that conditions for some people are so terrible that anything is preferable, even Alabama as reports now indicate that many immigrants are moving back. As for freeloaders, workers work hard in the fields or their jobs and are very desirable by employers who want workers who don't complain, work at whatever is told them, arent in a union, and happy to do the work for wages the companies want to pay. They pay taxes through their paychecks, they pay taxes through their purchases like food and clothing and cars, and they pay taxes through their rent or homes. They're not allowed to access services for themselves and the net gain to the society in general is positive and will be even more so with their progeny.

Having worked for many years helping put on musicals at the high school and college levels, I can state that there is a fantastic amount of work involved. I hope these teachers' and young peoples' efforts don't go to waste because of some company officials that want publicity of their own.

more likely a bunch of rednecks in Alabama who want everyone in the other 49 states, and other countries, to get on their knees and bow to them.

Their anger is based on a changing America that they refuse to accept and can only wail against by writing these kinds of comments. Demography is destiny and this enrages certain people. Hence the trolling on this thread and this page.

I see nothing wrong with this at all. The company has rights to these things and they can say who and who can't present them. Good for them!!!!

The issue in Pelham may be moot. On Thursday the 11th Circuit blocked two sections of the law that apply to employment and contracts with the state.

If you want to stop the influx of illegal aliens coming into this country then go after what is attracting them and that is JOBS. Fine businesses that EMPLOY illegal aliens and the problem will disappear overnight.

Then you institute laws such as Arizona's and Alabama's that require any police action to also include identifying the citizenship of people before being released.

And then we will pay $10 for a box of strawberries. and $5 for McDonald's french fries, also produced in factories filled with illegals, and not just Mexican's. Illegals from European countries as well. My Mexican father always says, illegals are like the humidity, once the come here you are never gonna get them out.

The way the Federal Reserve keeps printing our money, you will be paying 5 dollars for those McDonald's fries shortly.
