Brazil Dolphin Rescue Becomes Internet Sensation (VIDEO)

Posted: 03/ 8/2012 8:49 pm

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A dramatic video showing 30 beached dolphins being rescued by beachgoers in Brazil has become an internet sensation.

The video shows dolphins appearing out of nowhere and suddenly beaching en masse on the Rio de Janeiro state coastline. They were apparently caught in a strong ocean current.

Stunned beachgoers in swimming trunks at first look on as the dolphins' high-pitched squeals are heard. But within seconds, people quickly race into the surf to help the dolphins.

Dozens of people are seen swimming into the ocean and dragging the mammals by their tails in an effort to them back into deeper waters.

And the effort this past Monday was apparently successful. After all the dolphins were rescued, the crowd of dolphin-savers and onlookers broke into cheers.

to me it looked like they were chasing the fish into shore to catch them and over shot their mark. they just misjudged the situation? maybe they got caught off guard by a wave? who the heck knows for sure.

These oceanic (deep water) dolphins beached themselves at Arraial do Cabo, Brazil after being injured by a violent earthquake along the Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge. They were suffering barosinusitis. The injury destroyed their sense of direction and their ability to dive and feed themselves.

Thanks for the informative comments and info! All too often these videos go viral but there's so little background and fact attached and no one takes the time to find out and understand the WHOLE story.

Notice how it just took one person to step forward and start the rescue effort. A single act of compassion that snowballed into a group effort. Something to think about in our everyday lives.
