'Maleficent': Elle Fanning May Join Angelina Jolie In 'Sleeping Beauty' Twist

Elle Fanning May Play Sleeping Beauty In 'Maleficent'

It looks like the revisionist fairy tale "Maleficent" is happening sooner than you thought, and it might have just added a bit of Fanning power to the marquee. Twitch Film reports that Elle Fanning, Dakota's younger sister, is in talks to play Princess Aurora -- a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty -- opposite Angelina Jolie's evil sorceress n the new film. According to THR, the film could start shooting as early as June.

"Maleficent" has been knocking around for quite a while, almost always with Jolie attached in the lead role. The Disney re-imagining of "Sleeping Beauty" would focus on Jolie's title character, who curses Princess Aurora to die on her 16th birthday; a rival sorceress puts Aurora under a spell that puts her to sleep, and can only be broken by the kiss of a prince. (You know the drill.)

The film has been knocking around for quite a while and even had Tim Burton attached to direct at one point. He departed last May, leaving Robert Stromberg in charge. Stromberg -- best known for his Oscar-winning production design work on "Avatar" and "Alice in Wonderland" -- will make his directorial debut on the film.

Jolie considers "Maleficent" a passion project, in part because her kids have pushed her to take the role.
