Miami Indie Cinema Roundup: Arthouse Films March 12-18

This Week At The Movies: Solving A Murder in Turkey, Love In 1940s Cuba, Creepy Kids Named Kevin, And A Tribute To Choreographer Pina

Although the Miami International Film Festival is over, the line up for this week's movie houses are just as eclectic. Also, some special events are planned for some of the films: Help benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation when you watch "Forks Over Knives" or schedule a night out on the town Havana style with the South Florida premiere of "Chico and Rita."

Whether you're into documentaries, rom coms, murder mysteries or foreign language films (or a mix of any of the above), and you'll find exactly what you're itching for this week.

La Promesse March 15 at 8 p.m.Tickets: $8 member, $10 adult nonmember, $8 seniorsA part of a series paying tribute to the Dardenne brothers, this award-winning film follows Igor and his 15-year-old son Roger as they rent out apartments to illegal immigrants in Belgium.

Porfirio March 16, 17 and 18 at 8:45 p.m.Tickets: $8 member, $10 adult nonmember, $8 seniorsBased on the true story of Colombian police officer Porfirio Ramirez, who becomes paralyzed after a failed police mission. When the courts fail to help him, he hijacks a plane to talk to the president about it. Director Alejandro Landes will be conducting a question-and-answer session with the audience following all three screenings.

This illustration film tells the story of jazz pianist Chico and the beautiful singer Rita. When they come together in 1940s Havana, their love takes them to the United States and back to Cuba in time for the revolution. During the film debut on March 16, guests will be treated to a Q&A with director Fernando Trueba, as well as a movie premiere experience with music by Grammy Award-winning Latin jazz musician Federico Britos and a reception from 9 to 10 p.m. with food from Havana Harry's, Cibo Wine Bar, Seasons 52, Bacardi open bar and hand-rolled cigars from Sabor Havana. An extended Q&A with the director will be on March 17 at 5 p.m.

Based on the book by the same name, every mother’s worst nightmare comes true in this creepy film. Tilda Swinton plays Eva, mother to Kevin (Ezra Miler), who fights for years to shake the feeling that her son is the manifestation of evil. Everyone else thinks she’s just seeing things, and her husband, played by John C. Reilly, comforts her with “He’s just a sweet little boy.”

A murder mystery appears to be on the brink of being solved, only to become even more complicated. In the Turkish countryside, a man comes forward and confesses to a murder. However, he struggles to lead them to the body and their conversations as they search for it makes it clear this is no ordinary murder. This Turkish film debuted at last year's Cannes Film Festival and was the co-winner of the Grand Prix.

New Yorker Fred wakes up after a one-night stand to discover the woman he’s next to in bed doesn’t use birth control. He spends the rest of the day with Mindy and realizes he might actually like her.

Ewan McGregor and Eva Green play strangers in a world where people are slowly losing all their senses.

This film explores the idea that degenerative diseases can be controlled and even reversed if one cuts out all animal and processed foods from their diets. Drs. T. Colin Campbell and Caldwell Esselstyn travel the world on the same mission, though they don’t know it yet, discovering trends in food and medicine.
