UltraViolet, Women's Rights Group, Upgrades Movement Via Social Media

Womens Rights

Progressive campaigners and online activists Nita Chaudhary and Shaunna Thomas had an idea for a new kind of women's rights group: one that uses cutting-edge online advertising techniques to engage more people in the fight to end sexism in politics, media and pop culture.

They were not quite ready to launch their project, called UltraViolet, and their website was not yet running when the news broke that Susan G. Komen for the Cure had pulled cancer screening grants from Planned Parenthood over abortion politics. Feeling that this could be their moment to grab women's attention, Ultraviolet leapt into action, launching its first campaign with Moveon.org to call on Komen to reverse its decision and gathering 60,000 signatures in just a few hours.

Komen reversed its decision two days later, Komen executive Karen Handel resigned, and Chaudhary and Thomas suddenly found themselves at the helm of a rapidly growing women's rights community.

"We went from a tiny organization with a few thousand members to a quarter million strong, with members in every state and congressional district," Chaudhary told Huffpost. "The right wing decided to escalate a bubbling war on women, and hundreds of thousands of people came out of the woodwork to fight back with UltraViolet."

UltraViolet, which is funded by the progressive nonprofit Citizen Engagement Lab, has already gathered 300,000 members in less than two months of existence, making it clear to the women's rights community that the days of organizing sit-ins at local courthouses and knocking on doors to gather signatures are long over. While its founders say that UltraViolet is not intended to replace the important women's advocacy groups that already exist, such as the National Organization of Women, they are using social media in new and unique ways to reach more people.

"Women needed far more vehicles for making their views heard," Thomas said. "It's a nimble, lean organization using newer online advertising tactics and rapid response to create truly in-the-moment, media-driven campaigns. Our goal isn't to replace or replicate what organizations are already doing, but to reach more people and bring more voices into the space."

Since the Komen debacle, UltraViolet has found numerous reasons to rile up its members. It was the first group to call for advertisers to ditch Rush Limbaugh's show after he called Georgetown student Sandra Fluke a "slut," and that petition collected more than 160,000 signatures. More than 40 advertisers have peeled off the show so far, including ProFlowers, which Ultraviolet singled out as an organization that primarily serves women.

Another petition circulated by UltraViolet, asking Congress not to repeal President Obama's birth control coverage mandate, received 75,000 signatures in a few hours, and 10,000 people submitted personal stories of how birth control is vital to them. And Thomas and Chaudhary are now trying to escalate a campaign to stop former director of the White House National Economic Council Larry Summers from heading the World Bank.

"We know laws and elections aren't going to end sexism alone," Thomas said. "We need to shift our fundamental culture, the products we buy, what we see on TV. Last year, we jumped on a story about how iPhone's Siri couldn't find an abortion provider in New York City and would push people to crisis pregnancy centers, and it resulted in 30,000 signatures overnight and eight major stories. A good lesson for us there is that culture matters, and that's going to be a core focus over the next year."

With so much debate in the culture around women's health issues lately, the ground is particularly fertile for an up-and-coming women's rights group to reach and engage women in all corners of the country, who otherwise wouldn't be paying attention to politics. So far, Chaudhary and Thomas are the only two people involved in Ultraviolet's day-to-day operations, but Chaudhary said they're "looking to build up pretty quickly" and become a major player in the 2012 elections.

"The GOP war on women is so horrifying, it's essentially spawned this new community of people saying, 'Wait a minute, this is 2012. We want to take action to oppose this stuff,'" Thomas said. "As awesome as the tools are and as much experience we have, it's more the environment we're launching in that's really conducive to mobilizing women."

When a GOP can laugh at a 911 tape of a woman being beaten, heard on a 911 tape, or condone an infant' skull bashed in, suffering left occipital brain trauma for life, it is not hard to understand that GOP though about women and children is beneath that than as human beings. At least this is how the Indiana GOP behavior & function.

The treatment of women by Indiana GOP is worst than treatment of dogs in a pound & children condoned to be beaten bloody dead, condoned by DCS Payne, IAG helps hide deaths & will commit perjury for DCS, as Gov Daniels has audacity to support incompetence of DCS, who ignore reports of abuse, allowing children to be slaughtered.

YAWN. Another leftist women's group. Because those have been soooo effective. In maintaining the status quo, that is.

What a joke. If it was for "women," that would be one thing. But it's for liberal/prog women, who have a little sexism problem of their own. I won't listen to a word they say until they get some consistency and quit acting like it's okay for sexism to be used against conservative women but not liberal women. You show me a link where they defend conservative women, and I'll click it. Until then, I'll think it's what it is, a way to scare liberal women into voting against their best interests. Because women are only served when BOTH SIDES take note. And wealth is every bit as important as birth control.

Coincidence or synchronicity? You decide.

Can you point me to where a conservative woman has been reviled in the last month on public airways? If you read the article, this group is very new. You think the GOP is going to make it easier for you to accumulate wealth? The GOP is not looking for you to succeed - unless it's in baby making capacity. Good luck accumulating wealth with that one. Your odds would be better buying a lotto ticket.

Advertisers Flee Right Wing Radio

Premiere Networks is circulating a list of 98 radio advertisers who want to avoid "environments likely to stir negative sentiments... They've specifically asked that you schedule their commercials in dayparts or programs free of content that you know are deemed to be offensive or controversial (for example, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Tom Leykis, Michael Savage, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity)."

John Avlon notes "the irony is that the same market forces that right-wing talk-radio hosts champion are helping to seal their fate. Advertisers are abandoning the shows because they no longer want to be associated with the hyperpartisan -- and occasionally hateful -- rhetoric. They are finally drawing a line because consumers are starting to take a stand."

1. Call the advertiser, be polite.
2. Write a letter to the advertiser, be polite.
3. Copy the station and the FCC with the advertiser letter.
4. Politely call the General Manager of the station, tell the GM what you are doing and why, tell them you have contacted the advertiser and copied the FCC.
5. If the local advertiser uses an agency, contact the agency, as well.Just ask the local business, if they use an agency.

It won’t take many letters and phone calls to get their attention and remind the station that the letters need to be placed in the station’s public file. (the public file is an FCC requirement)

Local stations don’t get many local avails in Rush’s show and many pay a huge fee to Premire to run the show.If they start losing business because of this cretin, they will raise hell with Premire

Ninety-eight major advertisers—including Ford and Geico—will no longer air spots on Premiere Networks’ ‘offensive’ programs. Insiders say the loss will rock right-wing talk radio.

Valerie Geller, an industry insider and author of Beyond Powerful Radio, confirmed the trend. “I have talked with several reps who report that they're having conversations with their clients, who are asking not to be associated with specifically polarizing controversial hosts, particularly if those hosts are ‘mean-spirited.’ While most products and services offered on these shows have strong competitors, and enjoy purchasing the exposure that many of these shows and hosts can offer, they do not wish to be ‘tarred’ with the brush of anger, or endure customer anger, or, worse, product boycotts.”

well, it's a "noble" cause....but narrow, divisive, Fascist TeaPublicans using the "social media" to drum up support is kinda silly.....

...after all, most of the electorate that supports the narrow, divisive, Fascist TeaPublican Party ideology and methodology don't get cable, can't use cell phones, or have computers......

....and if they do, they don't know how to use them........

........that one is dead in the water......

I wrote the following to all of them: Please stop advocating for hatred against women. We are 51% of the American electoral and we are going to unite against the people who advertise on your stations. If you love America you have to represent all of us – not just a faction you can control and manipulate to hate agendas. Rush Limbaugh and his cronies hate women, poor children, poor people, people of color, people who are not Christian, really pretty much everyone they cannot manipulate and convince to their hate agenda. You have profited greatly from their hate for decades. Now is the time for you to put some of that profit into helping the world. Think about it.

Pure political theater for the politically naive and the gender ignorant. The left is attempting to create a belief that Republicans are waging a war on woman for no other reason then to deflect attention from the failures of this Administration and to garner the support of the rabid left who actually buy into such tripe. Once again, liberals prove that their agenda is one of dividing the American people by creating economic, social and gender warfare to achieve their objectives. They are not concerned with uniting this country so we can all move forward together, but are intent in destroying it with their selfish policies that are tearing this country apart. The liberals are truely the great dividers and Obama is their king.

"The GOP war on women is horrifying..."........oh pleeze.....you know what is horrifying?? That the MSM and the progressive foot soldiers keep pumping out this fodder of lies and propoganda with a straight face and the average citizen is believing it.

The only "war on women" is one created by the left in order to convince the politically ignorant (those who get their limited amount of political news from sites such as MSNBC, ABC, et al) that republicans "hate" women. This is a purely political ploy orchestrated by the left and embraced by the White House and to think otherwise shows either your ignorance of the topic or your denial of truth. This is just the beginning of what will possibly be the most bitter election ever.
