81-Year-Old Breaks Leg But Goes Back To Saves Wife From Fire

An elderly man didn't let a broken leg stop him from saving his wife from a fire.

KSHB in Kansas City reports that 81-year-old Jim Hodkins jumped out of the second story of his burning home, causing him to break his leg. Then he went back inside the house to rescue his wife, Bertha.

The Hodkins' neighbor, Ed Winfrey who owns the house, said Bertha suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease.

"I heard the sirens, and when I stepped out of my house about a quarter of a mile from here I saw the smoke and came over to investigate," Winfrey told KMBC.

The Hodkins were taken to the hospital for treatment. They are both expected to be okay, said the Examiner, which also reports that the cause of the fire is unknown.
