Lady Cecelia Missing Fishermen: Search Suspended By Coast Guard

By GENE JOHNSON 03/11/12 08:50 PM ET AP

SEATTLE — The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search Sunday for four men missing from a fishing trawler off the Washington coast, saying it's unlikely the men are still alive.

Rescue crews had searched through the night after an early Saturday distress signal from the 70-foot Lady Cecelia led them to a debris field, an empty lifeboat and an oil sheen several miles off the coast.

By Sunday morning, crews in Coast Guard cutters and an MH-60 helicopter had covered 640 square miles, Petty Officer Shawn Eggert said.

"We have searched far beyond what the capacity of somebody to survive in these conditions might be," he said.

Coast Guard officials are unsure what happened to the Lady Cecelia. Eggert said he had no details on the debris found off the coast, or whether the vessel was still intact.

The lifeboat found by rescuers had no identifying marks, but Eggert said it's "extremely likely" the raft was from the Lady Cecelia since no other boats in the area reported losing such a craft.

He also noted that contrary to previous reports, the life raft was fully inflated and in usable condition.

The Coast Guard identified the four missing men as 42-year-old Dave Nichols and 38-year-old Jason Bjaranson of Warrenton, Ore.; 25-year-old Chris Langel of Kaukauna, Wis.; and 22-year-old Luke Jensen of Ilwaco, Wash.

The fishing vessel has a home port in Warrenton, Ore., and is registered to Dale Kent of Bay City, Ore.

Kent, who is 80 years old and deaf, could not immediately provide a statement to The Associated Press on Sunday. But his grandson Caleb McKinney said Kent had fished on the vessel for 21 years.

"He was close to the captain and most of the crew," McKinney said.

Langel was onboard as an observer to monitor the vessel's catch. He was employed by Saltwater Inc., which is based in Anchorage, Alaska, but also has an office in Seattle.

The Lady Cecelia was first registered in Oregon in 1991.

Overnight weather off the southern Washington coast consisted of a slowly moving front that created moderate waves but not stormy conditions.

A buoy located 20 nautical miles off the Washington coast recorded water temperatures of 43 degrees at 4 a.m. Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard said one of its helicopters brought four people to safety after their commercial vessel went aground near Newport, Ore. The vessel was reported aground on the south jetty at Yaquina Bay at about 5 p.m. Saturday.

One of the victims was a fisheries observer. These are young people with college degrees that take these jobs knowing the risks, because they are dedicated to the protection of the marine ecosystem and its inhabitants and the fair usage of the fish. (Ok, in the last few years, also probably because they really needed a job, but the observer program in North Pacific fisheries has been going on for decades). They have extensive safety training and at least in the Alaska program with which I am familiar, the boats are carefully checked out before they are allowed to deploy. I think this is only the third case of an observer being lost in all these years. My prayers for the families of all these young men, and specially for Chris.
Here is a video about the observer program.

As a former Fisheries Observer, I have the deepest sympathies for this scenario and the families involved. As a female, the stress for my family when I was offshore for 7-10 days with a boat of strangers was doubled and overwhelming to them. I'm glad to have left the program, but I keep an eye on the events, and this is a true tragedy. My condolences to the families and everyone involved.

How sad. My sympathies to all the families. They obviously knew the boat was sinking but at the end it must have sank very quickly before anyone could even get to the lifeboat.

The waters at the mouth of the Strait of Juan de Fuca just off Neah Bay Washington are among the worlds most dangerous . The US Coast Guard has a full time job rescuing wrecks and survivors from wrecks in that area . Very large steel hulled ships have broken in half there .

Thousands of boats , lives , and ships have been lost there . Years ago the survival of the Makah American Indian Reservation at Neah Bay depended on fishing those waters . That is as far West in the lower USA as one can go on foot .

Actually, Cape Mendocino in Northern California is the farthest point west in the lower 48.

The Strait of Juan de Fuca is nowhere near Warrenton. This boat is most likely missing somewhere off the Columbia River bar.

If they found debris of the boat, could it means there was an explosion after a fire started ?
My deepest sympathy to the family.

Usually after a sinking all the stuff on the boat that floats, plastic, etc. could bob to the surface. Doesn't mean the boat blew up.

I read somewhere that fishing is one of the most dangerous jobs in America. Keep that in mind next time you have fish for dinner. Appreciate what workers do for this country.

Yea, hence the name "Deadliest Catch". Ya know that series that started airing 7 years ago?

My salmon is usually farm raised though, just saying. I don't think PETA's going to think much of it.

We need to check with the liberals that keep attacking the fishing ships. I think they were involved.

Get a grip dude. Its whaling they are after, not commercial fisherman. Never seen anyone going after anyone not whale hunting.

Saying liberals are attacking fishing boats is like saying conservatives are blowing up federal buildings.

Sounds like you are commanding rather than asking. rcdunn5 doesn't need to explain anything to anyone. rcdunn5 is a obviously a very loving and compassionate person who cares for his/hers fellow human beings. But I think that it would take a miracle for you to process that.

the ocean is a very unforgiving, and often, violent area of the earth. sometimes, professional fishermen, have too much of a comfort level, when they are at sea. even the best trained, and most prepared, are swallowed up.

I've watched all of the deadliest catch series and its mind boggling how some life rafts are black in color and all "guaranteed dry" supplies are soaked and useless. This is life or death for these sailors and when an emergency happens, the boat isn't prepared. Not that these guys weren't prepared but most aren't

It is sad, but you can only last so long in the water at those temperature. Water conducts heat out of your body 20 times faster than the air... If you were a great swimmer, you would only have so long before the temperatures would sap your energy. Sad story, God bless the men and their families.

Someone told me once that you have a 50/50 chance of swimming 50 feet in 50 degree water. I know I had a hard time swimming to shore after rolling a boat over in a salt chuck in SE Alaska. I felt like I was going to pass out when I reached shore.
